Diane You are right on all counts.............I don't know about the middle initial for John, and I think it's better to disregard it until we find out how he came by it. My grandfather had one, but his father didn't............that was in the 1860's. I don't have anything on the Cunninghams. Wish I did! Maybe we can help each other down the road.
