Seeking information/connections to this family. John Bowen and Jane Turner were both b. NS (US Census records). Two daughters: a.. Jennie, b. 1863, New Glasgow, Pictou Co, NS (REF: Ltr to dau. from Town Clerk requesting info on Birth Record saying info not kept in that timeframe, ~ 1930) b.. Annie, b. ~ 1850, NS; d. 1899, Reading, Middlesex, MA. In 1880 Census, Jennie (23; no ages don't match; they don't in any 2 records) w/husband Henry TUCKER, son Henry, 1 yr; Dorchester, MA. Year of immigration smudged (1867? per??); sister Annie C. Bowen, bar help in saloon, Lynn, MA. Jennie/Henry married in 1878, when she was 23, he 35; but I believe she was 14 and pregnant; and KNOW he was 39. Have much info on TUCKER family and all the children to present (w/exception of children under 15), and two folks I can't find (taken by state). I am in communication w/a number of my 2nd, 3rd cousins; a few are interested in the genealogy; no one else has done research on this line. 1900 -- Jennie & Henry and many children (all named for his side of family, except for daughter Annie E.), living in Reading, MA. I know where Jennie & Henry Tucker/family members were in 1910, 1920, 1930 (he d. 1906); diff. locations in MA -- Malden, Everett, Cambridge; they and sev. children and Jennie's sister Annie C. bur. Reading, MA. WHAT I’VE DONE: (starting perhaps in 1992/3, so it’s not a new “brick wall”) a.. Looked for John and Jane Bowen in 1870, 1880, 1900 US Census (no clear cxn) b.. Looked for a John Bowen, b. 1840-1870-ish w/parents both b. NS living in MA (that could have been a brother); no clear cxn c.. Passenger records for John Bowen in 1860-1878 time period (B-400 is HUGE Soundex code; no clear cxn) (back in days of MF readers at NARA); several times d.. Looked (twice) (rented films) for John Bowen in 1851, 1861, 1871 Census, Pictou Co.; however, a majority of residents appear to be Scots Presbyterians e.. Obviously after Ancestry came online tried various online searches f.. Records are not extant in Pictou Co. in this time period g.. Identified another Bowen family in this area and communicated; no clear connection h.. Communicated with 4-5 others seeking Bowens in this area (over the years) w/cxn to Boston area; helped 1 find her ancestors; ID’d that woman I found in New Glasgow was related to 2 of the 5 I’d communicated with, but not to me i.. Looked for John Bowen in Boston C. Directories in 1876-1879 time period (when Jennie/Henry would have met; Henry was living there on Hanover St.) There were 4-6 men of this name, none particularly near where Henry lived; however there was a Chas. Bowen on Hanover St. (how did they meet?; I mean ... the baby was born 7 mo. after the marriage, so they had to have been close by!) j.. Dau. Jennie and Henry Tucker m. Stoneham, MA (?) why? There was no cxn to this town other than the marriage; Henry had a good, established job in Boston (customs officer/tax collector at time when 1/4 of $$ coming into the US came through the port of Boston) (perh. bec. she was pregnant?) k.. ONE record showed John Bowen, b. NY; not helpful; found some in central NY, but ... this disagreed with the other Census records; no clear clues l.. Posted queries at Genealogy.com; Rootsweb.com (years and years ago; and at various intervals since) – “My mysterious Bowens” both by BOWEN surname and on a Pictou Co. list. m.. Considered that they were illiterate and that the name may have been “BONE” – there are people of this name in Pictou Co., but John and Jane are both such common names n.. Tried to find Jane Turner; only one clearly found is in the Halifax area; to me this just means that there are records for this town; there could have been hundreds of Turner families; records just were not taken generally in much of NS o.. Annie C. Bowen, sister to Jennie – there is NO Death Certificate; just an index card in the town file and a record of her burial at the cemetery p.. Rented films w/early church records of New Glasgow and histories of New Glasgow; page by page searches; no clues q.. Considered that perhaps the BOWENS came from Berkshire Co., MA; where Henry TUCKER, Jennie’s husband was b. 1839. Many Bowens in the area; no clear cxn; (Loyalist perhaps?) Any thoughts welcomed.
