BettyJean is a cousin. Her father, Kermit Bowen, was an uncle to my father, Lucien (Lew) Walker Bowen, Jr. Lucien, Sr., Kermit, and the many other siblings, were born in Culpeper County, VA. Her mother was Betty Harland (from England). I was privileged to be able to attend the Memorial Service yesterday, which was lovely. I had been in touch with my cousin multiple times by telephone but had not seen her since I was quite little. Her given name was as her parents gave her and was not short for Elizabeth. Here is the death notice as appeared in the Washington Post this past weekend: "BETTYJEAN SCHENK On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, BettyJean passed comfortably surrounded by family. Loving wife of Ron; mother of Kevin, Keith and Kirsten (Budd). The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 12 from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. Services will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church, 7415 Buchanan St., Landover Hills, MD 20784.
