I discovered a few years ago that MY GGF, Wright Bowen, changed his name from Bourne, son of my GGGF Abner Bennett Bourne,  when he moved from Georgia to Florida for some reason. Any common experiences? History is an awesome thing; it can provide additional meaning to activities, events, behaviors, etc. So, I suggest you look at what was happening in the society between GA and FL at that time your ancestor changed his surname; there may be clues there. Be aware that the "Bourne" name is of French origin, and "Bowen" is of Irish/GB origin. For examp: Irish immigrants and their descendants were poorly treated a "white trash" during an unfortunate period of American history. Their persecution varied across different states/colonies, and even areas within states. Also, there was a time when Great Britain (which included Ireland) was supportive of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and although they never officially recognized the CSA there was hope on the part of many Southerners that they would; meanwhile, France had historically been a supporter of the USA since its independence, and they, too, never officially recognized the CSA. Could this have something to do with what may have been happening at the time your ancestor changed his surname, perhaps in combination with something associated with his move to FL?
