Hello, My research on BOWEN's is limited to Wales. However, there is a line of Forename WRIGHT BOWEN's from Wales you may want to check on the UK web sites. Regards, Carolyn
It comes from Old Welsh ab or ap Owen, or Son of Owen.... On Fri, Dec 27, 2013 at 2:24 PM, Steve Bowen <[email protected]>wrote: > I have the same problem. I have the same problem. Bowen supposedly derives as son on Bowen and from Wales BUT I can find no family link to Owen on my side either. My Bowen family lived in Powell, Tennessee. My grandfather Andrew Jackson Bowen used to tell me that he was told Bowen started out as Owen. But I have no proof of this other than his word. Also, in researching BOWEN in/near Culpeper & Fauquier counties (where there are BOURNE lines, too), distinguising the two surnames in handwritten legal documents of the 1700s & 1800s can be VERY difficult, so wouldn't be surprised to find one became the other... Because of the brick wall I have hit on my Bowen family around 1800, I am suspicious the name may have been something else prior. Illiteracy seems to be part of the problem. When asked to give names people often had no idea how it was spelled and the person taking the information wrote down what they heard when the person spoke their name. I don't think it was always a desire to make a change. My Bowen family was around Fayetteville, TN. _____________ Rik Rasmussen On Fri, Dec 27, 2013 at 11:13 AM, Bob Keating <[email protected]> wrote: > When my GGF Worldly Wright Bowen, moved from Georgia to North Florida, > Waldo, in the 1800s. When my GGF Worldly Wright Bowen, moved from Georgia to North Florida, Waldo, in the 1800s. Any similar experiences? Bob Keating
Hello everyone I am hoping to make contact with cousins and also hoping for information and pictures of my grandfather's KIRCHER and or BAIRD family. William BOWEN born about 1905 Philadelphia married Anna KIRCHER born about 1906 in Philadelphia. Anna was my grandfather Louis KIRCHER's sister. Anna and Louis' parents were Frederick KIRCHER and Margaret BAIRD. William and Anna BOWEN's son William BOWEN was married to Dolores RYAN. I'm not sure if anyone else is still alive or not so for the sake of privacy I won't list others. I'm looking forward to hearing from any cousins or those who think that they might be related. Happy hunting! Ella

Hi all Just joined this list to research the family of John BOWEN (1844-1893) & Ellen UNKNOWN (1852- aft 1911). They had 8 children according to the 1911c, and I have the details of the 7 who were still alive then. David - b1878 Meifod - aft 1911 Mariah - b 1880 Meifod - d 28 Mar 1953 (m Henry Treby HEALE and had 3 children) Richard Lewis - b 1882 Salop - possibly still alive after 1919 George - b 1885 - aft 1911 Charles - b 1886 Salop - aft 1935ish Gwen - b 1889 Salop - d 1978 Oswestry Margaret Ellen - b 1891 Hisland Shropshire - d 1963 Oswestry It is Charles (and his son, Rowland BOWEN) that my father and I are particularly interested in. Charles was sent to prison in 1932 for stealing from his clients - he was a solicitor. But what happened to him after that we cannot trace. Rowland wrote the definative book on the history of cricket. We have all the details that have been posted online on various websites. If anyone has any further information either of this immediate family or relations I'd be very happy to hear from you. Cheers Andy

The original Welsh name was "ap Owen" (son of Owen). This was sometimes spelled Boughan. My Bowen ancestor Hobbs Bowen supposedly came from Glamourshire or Glamorganshire Wales to Maryland in the mid 1600s. Tim Timothy C.
