I'm looking for the parents of my great-great-grandfather Yancey Ancel Bowen. He was born June 1837 in Forsyth Co, NC. He died in Roane Co, WV in 1902. He married Susan Harris in Oct 1858 in Forsyth Co., NC. He served in the 33rd NC from 1861 until the end of the war. He moved his family to Roane Co, WV between 1867 and 1870. The 1850 Forsyth census lists: Bowen, Margaret 43 born in VA Ansel 12 born in NC Christina 10 born in NC John HW 7 mos born in NC The 1880 Roane Co, WV census lists Margaret living with Ancel. She is listed as being 74 years old and widowed. The 2 census records are all the information I can find on Margaret. I have been unable to identify her husband. Hi Willa,I was just cleaning up my mail and saw this oldddddd email.  My Bowen family were in Accomack, Virginia (William), His son William to Somerset, MD. His son, Luke from MD to NC. His son David was in NC, His son, Luke was in NC. His son, James moved from NC to SC. His son William from SC to GA, His son Charles remained in Augusta, GA. It is so good to see some activity on the Bowen Mailing List!! And as it happens, I spent a couple of days this week at the LVA looking at Chancery Records there. I have been trying to find Susannah’s (wife of James Bowen of Mecklenburg, VA) maiden name, but as luck would have it, I found 3 more children for their family instead. I’ve posted the images at both Ancestry.com (Hansford Clayton Family Tree) and over at Familysearch.org as they don’t charge a membership to join your tree with theirs. The only downside is that it’s fully editable by anyone. But, I don’t mind. I can see who edits anyone and contact them if I want to. But, I’ve never needed to in all the years my tree has been there. The short list of added children (and I was SO surprised to see their names!!) Laban Bowen who married Betsey Cooper and moved to Floyd Co., Indiana [he married over in Botetourt Co., VA – don’t know why] Judy Bowen who married Reuben Booker [haven’t looked into their details yet] Lucy Bowen who married John Robert Gwartney and moved to Harrison Co., Indiana Plus all the other 8 are documented! Zachariah Bowen died in Mecklenburg, VA Milly Bowen moved to GA Stacy Bowen moved to NC Wyatt Bowen moved to NC Elisha Bowen (my ancestor) moved to Halifax Co., VA Caty Bowen married Thomas McCarter Liza Bowen married James McCarter Richard James Bowen moved to Putnam Co., Indiana Who would have guessed so much information on this family would end up being documented in 1868? Forty years after James Bowen died (about 1826). And not to mention finding it in 2018? Sometimes it really pays off to keep on searching no matter how odd it may seem. Hope this helps someone.
