I checked to see when the fire was in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. It was June of 1877. There is also a St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. They had a fire, too. So if you could be a little more specific maybe we can find them. Some dates would help. Judy ps My grandfather was a Bowe from Cumberland, England. Came to America with parents in 1888. It is not much because some of the information on the pages is very worn. My great Grandmother was Catherine Bowe. Her father was Henry t. Bowe. He was a stone mason. He help to rebuild St John, New Brunswick with his brother Timothy. They also built homes on Bow street in Boston, Massachusetts. Their father was John Bowe. He was a Judge who had a statue in St. John before the fire. He(John) was married twice. His first wife died and the children went to the USA and settled in the south and became mill owners. Johns second wife, Henry's mother, is buried in Bradford, Massachusetts USA. That is all the information I have to go on from my family. We are finding a number of different genetic lines with the surname from Ireland, and a family crest only belongs to one lineage. If there is one for a Bowe line in Ireland (I haven't seen one, anyone else?), then we need to establish which genetic line the crest was originally attributed to. It wouldn't have any significance for any other genetic Bowe lines. You will find commercial websites online that advertise products, including family crests and surname histories. They will show you a crest for the surname Bowe from England. As yet, we don't have any data connecting any Bowe lineage in Ireland to any Bowe family in England, especially not to a Bowe family to whom the crest was attributed. These websites have more of a commercial bent than anything else, so use them with caution. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a Bowe family connection that goes back to Ballinakill (old Queens Co.) now Co. Laois. not that very far from Castlecomer over the border in Co. Kilkenny. My Michael BOWE m Bridget TOBIN round abt. 1794....at least that's going by the date of the first child bpt. in Ballinakill in 1795. ( so we are assuming that Michael and Bridget must have been bn abt. 1770 - 1775....) The names of the children that we have confirmed by bpts. at Ballinakill are. Elizabeth, Bridget, Michael, Martin, Catherine, Edmund and 2 Thomas's (first on must have died.) he was possibly a twin. as Edmund was bptd. same date. The funny thing is that Bridget (who is my direct decendant married a William Walshe abt 1820. (records of their marridge is missing, but we have all the bpts. of their children. Oct 1807. All these children were bptd. at St Bridget's, RC Church at Ballinakill. Could this family originally have come from Kilkenny (not that far away. So your Bowe and Walsh families were probably acquainted with each other in Ireland. Charlie King Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They emigrated to central New York during the potato famine. One of the brothers married a Kenney from Castlecomer, their Bowe daughter married a Walsh in central New York. My sense is that these families knew each other in close geographic proximity in Ireland and stayed in touch as emigrants in central New York, but apart from the Bowe brother marrying the Kenney from Castlecomer, this is speculation just based on common emigration patterns. Anyway, they are fairly common names from that part of Ireland. You might consider joining the DNA project as we are trying to reconstruct the families from that area (among others), and to ascertain over time which line may have their roots with the ancient Gaelic O'Buadhaigh sept: http://www.bowesonenamestudy.com/dna_project.html Martha H.
