If not, do you happen to know Julia's last name -- his wife. If so I have a way to help try to narrow down to the right county. Many with our surname from Ireland are from the south central and southeast counties. There's a lot about this at the website I just linked to under Origins -- Irish. I hope my project can be of some help. Do you know what they knew or John emigrated? I could include him in our immigrants section (under Origins). Sincerely, Martha Bowes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. After you get a break, can you post back how you went about this, generally? Those with Irish history need all the help they can get! I can't match up our lines in Kilkenny as yet. Sue, Richard comes up here: http://kilkenny.brsgenealogy.com/search.php . You might order this record and see who his parents were. You can then search their marriage record, and estimate his father's birth and find that too. You might get back further. Let me know what happens. Cheers! Author: BowesOneNameStudy Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bowe/340.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks everyone for clarifying. Unless superly (sorry I got the gender wrong before -- I'll have to learn to just use the online handle) were to have a male Bowe from her line participate in the DNA project, and find he is related to my line from Kilkenny, there are at least four genetic lines for the surname Bowe/s immigrated to New York (it is not unusual for both spellings to occur in the same family though it doesn't always happen). I am sure that more will turn up. There is another one from County Leix, Ireland, who emigrated there in the early 1900s. It's also interesting to note how often the same first names appear in different genetic lines (including "back when" in Ireland). Superly, I do wonder if our lines are related since both settled in the small town of Jordan. We also have a Vincent in our line, not a very common name. Even today, New York has a high concentration of the Bowe and Bowes surnames: http://www.dynastree.com/maps/detail/bowe.html and http://www.! dynastree.com/maps/detail/bowes.html . It would be great to try to catalog them all in the DNA project as a way of capturing many if not most of the genetic lines that came to the US. The info posted there is from Rex Bowe, who I am related to. The James E. Bowe born in 1832 I was talking about was from Central New York, Otsego County. He was the son of Oliver Bowe and Thursa Eaton. I show a record of James dying May 3 1863 in Salem Church, Virginia (a civil war battle) leaving wife Maria and 3 children. Oliver Bowe is the son of Edward Bowe III and Ruth Hubbard. Edward and Ruth are Rex and my common ancestors. There were apparently two James E. Bowe(s) in New York at about the same time, and mine is not the Irish one. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The part I can't reconcile is Superly has different posts stating he descends from your James E. Bowe, but also has a Richard Bowe ancestor born in Galway in early 1800s. Either he has a different James Bowe in NY descending from Richard and mixed him up with your James E. Bowe, or he has two different Bowe-s in his line? Hopefully he'll see this and join in.
