Author: BowesOneNameStudy Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bowe/379.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Glad to hear back from you. What you're calling, fairly enough, a guess, I'm looking at as a hypothesis to be tested, absent a better one ;-) Do you remember this thread below that I found at Ancestry that you'd also posted in?... Bowie186: "There was a William and Richard Bowe who were sent to Australia in 1832. Their Father was John Bowe and he married Margret Walsh he came from Castlecomer and she came from Freshford both in Kilkenny. I am trying to track down more information about John Bowe but keep hitting brick walls." http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?o=0&m=44.1.2.1.2&p=surnames.bowe If we can establish that you connect with this other fella, then maybe he has a male to test. I've posted in this thread yesterday and today. Maybe he's still following and we can all firm up the sources we're using to see what we can hang our hat on. IE, where do each of you get Margaret Walsh as John's spouse? Where does he get Richard as a brother to William, both son of John and sent away as convicts in 1832? If he knows, say from his own family history as passed down, that his John married a Margaret Walsh from Freshford, and if it can be found that you are related to the same John and son William, then we get closer. Then it sounds like he is looking for John to be born in Castlecomer because that's where he was in 1832, maybe not understanding it's not at all unlikely that he could have moved to Castlecomer from Freshford, and there's a detailed family lineage out of Freshford with a John born late 1700s who's otherwise unaccounted for. These are my Bowe, which is why I'm keen on knowing more about yours and Bowie186's sources, and whether he or she has any male Bowe to help with DNA. If if it all came together, we most likely get to "were they brothers or cousins," but it helps if papers and DNA both point to a geographic area to at least say, "good chance it was John b. 1772 or a cousin" or "part of this group and likely from here." Unfortunately there are no living male descendants that we know of, so we cannot enter the DNA test. As for the John Bowe we are looking for we are not even sure of his marriage in Freshford, this is only a guess, given the dates and the area, but as you know there are many Bowe's in the area and >I could be wrong. My real checking goes up to 1832 where William was convicted and his father John was living in Castlecomer Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BowesOneNameStudy Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bowe/44.1.2.1.1.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, this line from John m. Margaret Walsh came up again over here http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bowe/379.1/mb.ashx. I checked the Bowe(s) One-Name Study spreadsheet and family tree database and came up with (posted on the other thread): "We have a James b. 1779 in Freshford with a large descendant tree, many of whom eventually ended up in Australia. He had a brother John b. abt 1772. The family has nothing more on this John. Their father was a Thomas Bow b. 1750. Of course John Bowe was a very common name, but this marriage shortly before William was born is suggestive for now." I can't connect my own tree to this tree due to lack of early parish records, but my father's DNA matches the male Bowe descending from James son of Thomas. Also on his marriage record it says he was from "Grace" which refers to Grace parish, aka Tullaroan, next to Freshford. So I'm keen on this group. This is the largest Bowe family tree we have so far. Another large branch went to Newfoundland and some of them on to the US (see Diane's post here). My people wen to NY. There are a few other matches we can't connect by paper trail yet. If you descend from James son of Thomas' brother John, I would so love to connect your tree into this one. We are trying to reconstruct the Irish Bowe clan as best as possible. If the connection is strongly suggested but not proven I make a note of it if connecting a line. If a male Bowe on your line could do the cheek swab, Y chromosome DNA test as part of our DNA project, it could help confirm whether you come from this subgroup. If you look at our results, go to the 5th green group (Ireland). That's the cluster we're looking at out of Freshford. You see that only the earliest known ancestors show publicly (ie not the name of the testee) and Thomas b. 1750 is at the top of this group. These are the markers of a male Bowe descending from James from Freshford who had a brother John b. abt 1772. Assuming an unbroken patrilineal chain, your males should have the same markers if they were brothers (can't rule out cousins). Author: BowesOneNameStudy Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bowe/44.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Gerard, Just double checking how certain you are of your earlier generations. In our Irish Bowe records spreadsheet there is a family with a Patrick Bowe marrying Jane Anderson in St. Mary's, Kilkenny in 1816. They go on to have Bridget, Catherine, Edward, Elizabeth, James, Jane, Patrick and another Patrick (first probably died as it was common to name a child after a prior deceased child), all born St. Mary's. The second Patrick was born 1838. Then we have a Patrick Bowe III marrying Bridgit Shanahan (could also be the clerk heard/wrote Shannon as Shanahan?), Kilkenny District 2, 1874. Maybe these are different families from yours since the dates are off, and the Anderson marriage occurs with the original Patrick? But just thought I'd run it past you in case your info could have some errors if passed down through the gens. Castlecomer in the right time frame, nor a William for his son. You probably know that parish records as early as your John are hard to come by in Ireland. Available dates vary by parish and by record type (B, M, D). I only have one Bowe family tree out of Castlecomer and can't connect them to it either. Do you have any living male Bowe still who can join the Bowe DNA project? That would give you a chance of at least identifying a family group to work from. It's also interesting how much some of those folks moved around back then, not usually far, but from parish to parish and bordering counties. The Bowe are centered on the Laois/Kilkenny border and Tipperary. We have a spreadsheet of over 4500 Irish records and a facebook page that's quite active (that cover all Bowe and Bowes worldwide https://www.facebook.com/bowesonenamestudy). On that spreadsheet I find the following for the area discussed here. Keep in mind that parish records survived for different years in different parishes, and those years often varying within a parish between birth, marriage and death, so there are a lot of gaps. These are spelled as recorded: 1855 Richard Bow, Ballyconnery, Kilgobnet, Waterford (listed in 'Information Wanted' The Boston Pilot newspaper online http://infowanted.bc.edu/record/?recid=16885) 1836 James Bowe, Ballyconnery, Kilgbnet, Waterford (Tithe Aplotment Books) 1849 (abt) James Bowe, Ballyconnery, Kilgobnet, Waterford (Griffith's Valuation) 1860 Thomas Bowe, Kilgobinet, Waterford baptised son of Thomas Bowe and Johanna Hickey (Thomas Power and Catherine Hickey witnesses) 1871 Thomas Bowe, Kilgobinet, Waterford baptised son of James Bowe and Margaret Mullowney (Richard Bowe [if same Richard as above then never emigrated or returned to Ireland] and Margaret Mulloney witnesses) I'm also working on a family tree database to store the Irish Bowe/s trees. It looks like maybe we can get a pretty good one together here given these records and family history? Local gravestones might helps with some earlier connections?
