Hello Jean, Thanks for replying to my message. I have come across the use of the mother's maiden name in this way before and I had assumed that this might be the case. However the mother's maiden name is, I think, GILES though I suppose they might have used one of the grandparents names. I was surprised to find a fair number of middle names of BOWDEN in Devon and wondered whether there was some special reason for this. I have tried asking on the Devon list but have not received any useful information. Looking at the Devon rootsweb archives I saw a reference to this list and thought I would give it a go. I'm really scratching around trying to break down one of my brick walls. Many thanks for your interest, Regards, Peter BullGuard Anti-virus has scanned this e-mail and found it clean. Hello again Peter, I was re-reading your last message to me and something occurred to me that might be helpful to you. Many years ago when I first started researching the Bowden surname, I was astonished to discover there were very many people named Bowden in the Devon area. I have also found a lot of Bowdens in the southern hemisphere all from Devon. Perhaps you already know this but I was surprised as the Bowden name was not so common many years ago, particularly from Ireland where my Bowdens were from. Best Wishes. Jean.
