I searched eagerly for such a lady in the appropriate time frame, but with no luck. I can't be sure she wasn't a Farrar, but I am quite confident that she is not the Judith Farrar, daughter of William Farrar in Granville Co. She remains an "orphan" in my family until I can identify her parents. Rootsweb offers a service to forward any reference in its files that includes a given name, or combination of names. Years ago I requested "Judith and Bowdon", but so far I have not found the one I need. (This message and yours, of course, will be forwarded to me immediately.) Tom Aiken Virginia Beach

    1. Re: [BOWDEN] John Bowdon, son of William Bowdown.
    2. Hello Harriet, I am back from being away and am responding to your message. I am from Thomas Bowdon whose son, Thomas Bowden moved to Limestone County, TX in 1857 after the death of his father. Thomas was brother to my Benjamin Franklin Bowdon/Bowden. Is this your family? Do you know the origin of this Bowdon family? Thanks, Karen On Thu, 16 Nov 2006 11:03:07 EST Hhalwel@wmconnect.com writes: > Bowdon Interest > My name is Harriet Lockwood and I am looking for Bowdoin Bowden > and > Bowdon. 1. Re: [BOWDEN] Thomas Bowden, son of William and Nancy (Wiggins) Bowdon
    2. Joan, Thank you for the thorough information! I would love to exchange more info with you. I have an abstract of Thomas's will. Interestingly he is consistently referred to as TOMAS Bowdon rather than the more traditional spelling of Thomas. I am from Benjamin Franklin Bowdon born 12 April 1837. I do have some spouse names if that would be helpful for you also. I also have some info on the death of Thomas/Tomas. I would really appreciate any information on William Bowdon and Nancy Wiggins Bowdon. Do you have their parents' names and where they were born? My family traces this family to France. Have you heard this too? My grandfather was very proud of that. Please let me know if there is any info I can provide. 1. [BOWDEN] Thomas Bowden, son of William and Nancy (Wiggins) Bowdon
    2. Joan Gipson-Fredin
    3. Karen, Here is an abstract of the document that was my starting point on researching the family of William Bowden and Nancy Wiggins. I have him b. abt 1773 in Granville Co., N. Carolina and her about 1776. He died in 1842, and she died in 1860, both in Coffee County, Tennessee. Coffee County, TN County Court Loose Records, abstracted by Judy Henley Phillips and Betty Moore Majors, April, 1993 File 81: 1860 Sept 3 - Petition to sell slaves. Petitioners say that in 1842 William BOWDEN died testate . . . he gave his lands to F.W. BOWDEN, G.E. BOWDEN, the tract on which he lived . . . at death of widow divided equally between children (except F.W. BOWDEN he gave 2 negroes Daniel & Priscilla) and to G.E. BOWDEN two negroes Laura and Ben . . . After the death of the testator F.W. BOWDEN died testate. . . by his will after giving to G.E. BOWDEN his half of the land he says I wish the two negroes Daniel and Priscilla to fall back to Father's estate and be divided by Father's will . . . The widow Nancy BOWDEN has died recently intestate. William BOWDEN left as his children Thomas BOWDEN who has since died intestate leaving the following children: Jordon BOWDEN, John O. BOWDEN, Benjamin BOWDEN, Nancy V. BOWDEN, Josephine BOWDEN, James K. BOWDEN, Lafayette BOWDEN. He [William BOWDEN] left also a son John BOWDEN, who has since died leaving as children: Nancy C. BOWDEN who married _.F. GARRETT, G.W. BOWDEN, C.W. BOWDEN, L.A. BOWDEN, J.T. BOWDEN, E..J. BOWDEN, T.E. BOWDEN, and L. [or S.] R. BOWDEN. William BOWDEN also left a son who has since died intestate leaving as children: Eliza _. WHIFFIN intermarried with A.M. WHIFFIN, Caroline, now Caroline WALDEN, widow of A.B. WOLDEN, Hester Ann SCOTT wife of William SCOTT, Lucy wife of Uriah WALDEN, Sarah wife of R.E. GARRETT and James K.P. BOWDEN, John BOWDEN and Francis BOWDEN, the last minors and pet. By their gdn. John W. ADAMS. He also left a dau. Nancy who intermarried with Charles PARKER and has since died leaving as her heirs: Nancy wife of Thomas BAXTER, James PARKER, EL_ PARKER, Samuel PARKER, Priscilla PARKER, Daniel PARKER, the last two minors with G.E. BOWDEN their gdn. William BOWDEN also left Sam, William, and G.E. BOWDEN and a dau. Sarah, wife of Abner BARTON. Abner BURTON has been apt'd. admr. With the will annexed of William BOWDEN and administration of the estate of Nancy BOWDEN. Slaves: Joseph, 55, Hannah, 53, Daniel, 32, Charles, 40, Martha, 2 . . . /S/ A. BURTON. The names of Thomas's children are tantalizingly similar to your list. Of course, the only ones listed here would be those who were still alive in 1860. The original document is in the Coffee County Archives in Manchester, Tennessee. I have seen the original, but I have not compared it with the abstract in great detail. I have quite a bit of descendant information on William and Nancy (Wiggins) Bowdon if you are interested but only this on Thomas. Good luck and happy hunting! 3. Hi Tom, I have your John b. 10 Jul 1739, son of William Bowdoin and Elizabeth Travis, as the brother of my ancestor Travis, b. abt 1750. I too had John's wife's maiden name as Farrar, based on information from another researcher. I have no investment in the Farrar surname, but I'm curious about how you excluded the possibility that John was married to a different Judith Farrar from the one who married Jesse Hays. With so much repetition of names in the Bowdoin/Bowdon/Bowden family, it wouldn't be too surprising to see it in other families as well. Could it be that the error was in thinking that William Farrar was her father? Thanks for the word of caution. Hope your won't mind sharing your thoughts on this. 2. As a descendant of John Bowdon and his wife, Judith, I would like to caution those who report that her surname was Farrar. I accepted that name many years ago, and spent years tracking the Farrar family back forever. Then I learned that the same Judith Farrar, daughter of William Farrar of Granville Co, NC, had married Jesse Hays (Hicks, Granvillel Co., Marriage Bonds, lists Judith Farrar's marriage to Jesse Hays, 8.4.1796). At that time John Bowdon and his wife, Judith, had been married over thirty years. John died about 1831 and Judith died in 1827. I have copies of both their wills. Based on this incontrovertible evidence I sadly deleted the Farrars from my pedigree. 2. Hi Joyce, Thanks for all the information you've provided. It proves what I've been finding -- there is a lot of confusion between the families with the naming of generation after generation the same thing!!!! This will give me more to research however, and I do so much appreciate your help. It's a shame that there isn't more information to help connect all of these families on back -- but in the long run, feel good that we've been able to prove as far back as we have. Hope you'll have continued good hunting. Ardie In a message dated 12/2/2006 8:13:18 P.M. I come from John Bowden of the Isle of Wright Co VA. His sons moved to Franklin Co NC. I have done a lot of research in Grandville and Franklin Co Court houses and have never found a connect between the two families. Wish that I could have been of more help but as you can see there were several Travis, William and John Bowdens in the first 3 or 4 generations and it gets very confusing. 2. Hi Joyce, I've seen this listing as well -- but so far haven't been able to find the proofs that James was the son of Travis. Do you have a will for Travis that might help sort this out? There seems to be a real difference among researchers on this and since we come through the line of James -- we are really most interested in finding proofs of his parentage. Most of the research I've followed shows that William, brother of Travis, was the father of James -- by an unknown wife !!! Look forward to seeing more on this. Thanks for all help. 3. Hi Joyce- I am confident about my Bowden research from William Bowdon/Bowden who married Nancy Wiggins on down because in most cases I've seen original documents or have a good source citation for them. I can't say the same for most of the data up the line. From two independent sources, however, I have a very different family group for Travis son of William Bowdoin and Elizabeth Travis than the one posted below. Rather than share research I can't confirm, I'll leave it at that. 2. Just a note for study purposes. I don't think that James, b. abt. 1759, was the son of Travis. If you check the dates -- it seems he was more likely a brother to Travis -- and they both were sons of William. Travis did have a son, William, but this is the next generation on down. Would be interested in hearing what others think. Also, do you have any proof that Priscilla Williams was the dau. of Charles Williams and Elizabeth Abernathy? I know she was the dau. of Charles -- but haven't been able to verify his wife's name. Look forward to hearing more from all of you. Ardie In a message dated 12/1/2006 11:43:35 A.M.
