Joan, Thank you for the thorough information! I would love to exchange more info with you. I have an abstract of Thomas's will. Interestingly he is consistently referred to as TOMAS Bowdon rather than the more traditional spelling of Thomas. I am from Benjamin Franklin Bowdon born 12 April 1837. I do have some spouse names if that would be helpful for you also. I also have some info on the death of Thomas/Tomas. I would really appreciate any information on William Bowdon and Nancy Wiggins Bowdon. Do you have their parents' names and where they were born? My family traces this family to France. Hi Joyce, I've seen this listing as well -- but so far haven't been able to find the proofs that James was the son of Travis. Do you have a will for Travis that might help sort this out? There seems to be a real difference among researchers on this and since we come through the line of James -- we are really most interested in finding proofs of his parentage. Most of the research I've followed shows that William, brother of Travis, was the father of James -- by an unknown wife !!! Look forward to seeing more on this. Thanks for all help. Hi Joyce- I am confident about my Bowden research from William Bowdon/Bowden who married Nancy Wiggins on down because in most cases I've seen original documents or have a good source citation for them. I can't say the same for most of the data up the line. From two independent sources, however, I have a very different family group for Travis son of William Bowdoin and Elizabeth Travis than the one posted below. Rather than share research I can't confirm, I'll leave it at that. BOWDEN: Shelby Sentinel, 17 November 1881 DIED - At the residence of her son-in-law, Hon. J. W. Inzer, at Ashville, St. Clair county, on Saturday evening last the 12th inst., Mrs. CAROLINE POPE, widow of the late WILEY H. POPE, formerly a prominent citizen of this county, in the sixieth year of her age. Mrs. POPE's maiden name was BOWDON, and she was a sister of the Hon. F. W. BOWDON, and of Mr, SAMUEL BOWDON, of this county. She was, we believe reared in this county, and lived for a number of years in Columbiana. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She leaves a daughter, Mrs.INZER, and two sons, Messrs. ROBERT and JOHN POPE, surviving her. BOWDON Another old citizen has passed away. Mr. Samuel F. Bowdon breathed his last at his residence in this place (Calera) on Tuesday night at 8. o'clock. He had been in feeble health for some time, but until a day or two since able to be up. He was out. in town when he was stricken with the attack, something like appoplexy, which was the immediate cause of his death. He was a native of Shelby county, and was sixty years old. He was married on July 8, 1857, to Miss Margaret F. Cunningham, of this county, who with five children, four sons and a daughter survives him. He resided all of his life in this county and was well known to this people. He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, a good neighbor and a good citizen, His remains will be laid to rest at old Salem church about two miles from Montevallo at 1 o'clock, p.m., today. Rev. C. L. Dobbs will conduct the funeral services at the grave. The Sentinel extends sympathy to the bereaved ones in their sorrow. More About SAMUEL F.
