Online Genealogy Dictionaries and Lists I have been collecting URLs (Web addresses) of various online dictionaries and lists that are useful to genealogists. These are useful when trying to decode foreign or obsolete words often found in genealogy work. Rootsweb mailing lists are automatic and are managed by list robots. These robots take care of subscription requests and bouncing (rejected) emails. The most frequently asked question of subscribers is: ***************** "Why have I been unsubscribed?" Answer: If your list mail cannot be delivered for any reason, the list robot unsubscribes you after a certain number of failed attempts. (For the BOWDEN list the maximum member bounce score is: 3) This can happen for a number of reasons - some of the more common reasons are that your mailbox is full, your spam filter is blocking the list mail, your ISP is blocking list mail from Rootsweb, you have put an automatic responder on your email.... If you were unsubscribed and did not wish to be taken off the mailing list, simply subscribe again. However be forewarned that if whatever caused the list robot to unsubscribe you the first time is still happening, it will simply remove you again after a specific number of bounces--3--(rejected list mail to your email address). But as a courtesy to all BOWDEN listers, I can re-subscribe you manually. Just let me know. ****************** Other questions asked are: "How do I unsubscribe?" Answer: Simply follow the instructions at the bottom of every list mail message. ****************** "Why is my mail not getting to the mailing list?" Answer: Make sure that you are sending from the same email you are subscribed under. The list robot does not recognize names. It only recognizes email addresses. If your sending email address is not on the subscriber list, your email will be rejected. ****************** "Why am I not getting list mail?" Answer: Check the HelpDesk notices in the yellow box for announcements about any technical problems with Rootsweb mail. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ If you don't find the answer to your problem on the HelpDesk page you need to check if you are still subscribed to the list. You can get a list of all your subscribed to mailing lists from Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ If Password Central doesn't include all lists to which you should be subscribed, re-subscribe to any lists that are missing from your subscribed lists by sending a new e-mail to: LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com (replacing the word LISTNAME with the actual list name). Put only the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject and message body of your e-mail. ****************** Should anyone need further elaboration then you may give me--Yours Truly--a contact. GRIN --Manaia [List-Admin] BOWDEN-admin@rootsweb.com My gratitudes to Lorine McGinnis Schulze for sharing.

Hi all, I have a question for those of you researching the Bowden lines in the Penobscot Bay region. Does anyone have any guesses, or has anyone seen any evidence, as to how John Bowden and Eunice Bridges of Castine, ME are linked with the other Bowden lines in the area? Apparently, their daughters Elizabeth and Esther both married sons of Nehemiah L. Bowden and Rebecca (née) Bowden. Their children's birth records are in Castine (earliest child Elizabeth born 1823). Here's the basic information I have on John and Esther, along with John's second wife Sarah: ------------------- John Bowden was born in Penobscot, Hancock, Maine, calculated 1803. He married (1) Eunice Bridges [**Death Record of Elizabeth Bowden, née Bowden (daughter), 17 Apr 1899, gives parents' names as "John Bowden" and "Bridges", and father's birthplace as Penobscot, in contrast to the other mentions of Castine**]. John married (2) on 20 April 1846 in Castine, Hancock, Maine, Sarah (Sally) [née?] Bowden, who was born calculated 1802 in Massachusetts. John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1850, on August 14, in Castine. John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1860, on June 11, there. John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1870, on June 3, there. John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1880, on June 7, there. John's census info: 1850 - 47, Farmer, b. ME; 1860 - 56, Laborer, $40 personal estate, b. ME; 1870 - 68, Sexton, b. ME, cannot write; 1880 - 78, Laborer, he & father b. ME, mother b. unknown. Sarah's census info: 1850 - 48, b. ME; 1860 - 58, b. MA; 1870 - 78 [!], b. MA, cannot read or write; 1880 - Sarah, 81, b. MA, parents b. unknown ------------------- I can send the little information I have on their children, if anyone would like it. I'm not descended from John and Eunice, although I am descended from Nehemiah L. Bowden and Rebecca (née) Bowden of Castine, as well as Joseph Bowden of Orrington (who was also originally from Castine). Thanks. Sincerely, Mark A. CONNELLY mac3387@yahoo.com

That technique is very valid. I've used it for years with great success. Alternatively simply Google the specific web page I'm looking for. Often the owner retains the old Web site name as much as possible. Therefore a site with a name like http://www.goodplace.com/familyinfofiles/ might be found by Googling "familyinfofiles", "goodplace", or "goodplace.com". Looking for ancestors/descendants of James Bowden and wife Amelia (Oldham). Both born in England and died in Fall River, MA in 1866. They had children (in MA) of Susanna (married John Higginbottom), Sarah Jane (married John T. Riley), Thomas (married Esther Unknown). Louise (married Alexander Booth) and Elizabeth (married Joseph Green). Children and subsequent generations stayed in Fall River and area.
Hi Joan, Thank you for your helpful, encouraging reply. I just had gotten to a presentation on the Huguenots which reminded me to get started on my Bowdons again. After looking for awhile I did find that folks who spelled the name BOWDON tended to live in the south. People who used Bowdoin tended to live in the north (perhaps because of the spelling of Bowdoin College?) BOWDEN was much more common and seen in both the north and south. Estelle is an "honored" name in my family. It is my grandfather's sister's name and named for the Bowdon side. Also, I loved the sweet little character of Rose of Sharon in the "Grapes of Wrath". I have shown that movie so many times to my U.S. History classes. It is one of my favorite movies. If you remember, Rose of Sharon was pregnant in the movie but due to the modesty of the period, had a stomach as flat as a pancake! I am going to take a look at her character again. Thank you so much for pointing it out. There is a sports star that is also supposed to be a relative of my Bowdons too but I can't remember his name. When you have time, I'd love to know more about DeSoto County. My Thomas Bowdon also lived there but as I think I mentioned, he moved on eventually living in AR at the end of his life. The Bowdon's were successful and looked up to by the small town where they lived. My great great grandfather, B.F. Bowdon was referred to as one of the "old settlers" in the town and called "Uncle Ben Bowdon"/ Bowden in the local newspaper. I wish copies of the paper that went back farther in history had been saved as there was only slight mention of him in the later papers that survived. Here are some books suggested by the lecturer: Van Ruymbeke, Bertrand From New Babylon to Eden: The Huguenots and Their Migration to Colonial South Carolina (University of South Carolina Press) 2006 Butler, John. The Huguenots in America: A Refugee People in a New world Society. Harvard University Press, 1983 Golden, R.M. The Huguenot Connection: The Edict of Nantes, Its Revocation and Early French Migration to South Carolina. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1988 Although you most likely have already done this, I did check a wonderful Huguenot site that I got from Cindi's List and checked Huguenot surnames who are registered and researched in order to join the International society. Both Bowdon with other spellings and your Bobo name were listed. My Martin was listed there too. I thought maybe many other names might have been listed too but they were not. For example none of my Jenkins were listed nor any of my other family surnames. I did save something from the Huguenot Society of America and will send it separately. Thanks again, it was so nice to hear from you.
