This is the first segment of 32 pages of notes from a Bowdoin researcher. For now, just put the reference as 'Bowdoin Papers'. At no place in these 32 pages of papers does it give a clue as to who wrote it. At the end of the papers is a page of references which I will get to eventually. I did find a couple of questionable entries in the descendants of Pierre Bowdoin's descendants which need to be looked at more carefully. This first segment probably won't be of a LOT of use to a lot of us, but it may clear up some lines of this family for some. Read VERY carefully to see if any are of your line. Historical and Biographical Sketch of the Bowden, Bodine, Beaudoin (Boden, Bodin, Bowdoin Family Origin and Early History The surname Bowden, Bodin, Beaudoin including their many variations in spelling (Boden, Bodin, Bowdoin, etc.) are derived from the Baptismal Form meaning, "The son of Baldwin". Another source states that the derivation is from a local name meaning "Of Bowden", a parish in East Cheshire, England. Popularly and under the French influence, the above surnames have been passed down to the present day. Changes in spelling of the surname even by members of the same family have been common. Consequently, the ancestor of a present day Boden might have spelled his name Bodine or Beaudoin. The Bowdens were of Bowden Hall, County Derby, England in the 15th Century, yet they have a tradition that they are of Norman descent and that the name was originally Bodin. In 1572, two Protestant Walloons Nicholas and John Bowden settled in Rye, England. Early mention of the surman in England is shown as follows: Bodin de Langebell (Co. Oxford-1723); Boyedinus de Gaunt (Lincoln - 1273); Bodyn de Kant (London citizen - 1273); Richard de Boden Moylle (1591); Margaret Bwoden (widow) - 1583; Thomas Boden (Co. Derby - 1594). The Bodines (Bowdens) of New York, New Jersey and of America have their origin in the Family of Le Boudin or De Boudain and the antiquity of the surname is attested by the French Charters of the twelfth Century. The Family, Le Boudin was settled in Cambray, France, originally a district in the Low Countries as early as 1126. In France, the Family has played a prominent part of War and Peace and has given to the world, the noted French Jurist and Political Economist Jean Bodin. Jean was a native of Angers, France, born May 31, 1530 and died of the plague at Laon, 1596. Jean Bodin, author of "Livres de Republique" has been called the father of Political Science. The six books of Bodin form the ablest and most remarkable treatise extant on the philosophy of Government and Legislation. The family was also represented by Jean Francis Bodin, the Historian (September 26, 1776-1829) and his equally noted son, also an Historian, Feliz Bodin (December 1795 - May 7, 1837). Dr. Piere Joseph Bodin, the famous Deputy for the Department of the Loire who voted for the deportation of Louis XVI was also of this branch of the family. The line of descent of the Bodine (Bodin, Bowden, Boden, Beaudoin) Family originally from Cambray, France is as follows: Jean Le Baudain, Seigneur de Villiers (Lord of Villiers) - 1376; Jean Le Baudain - Bishop's Chamberlain at Cambray - 1419; Jean Le Baudain, (his son) - 1459; Jean Le Baudain, Seigneur de Villiers - 1748; Guillaume Le BAudain of Cambray (his son); Daniel Bodin (his son), removed to Medis, France; Daniel Bodin (born at Medis), his son; Jean Bodine (his son), the French Huguenot who fled to London and later emigrated to Staten Island where he died in March 1695.
I posted to the Bowden list using the very same e-mail address as always but I received it back as if I were sending it to request to join the list. This is a test to see if it goes to the correct e-mail address before I send more information. Thanks for your patience. Ruth

Dear List, I, too, am a descendant of Dangerfield Bowden, through his son Elliott Cornelius Bowden. I believe that Janice and I have corresponded before and shared our information. I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who shares this line. for those of you that I have driven to drink these last two days. I have been drving myself crzy dtrying to find out where I found thomas as father to all those Bowden boys; Richard, John, William and Thomas. It seems it came from a researcher--Sterling Bowden in Tennessee--through our family historian. I checked with Jack--the Bowden expert and he is not satisfied there is enough documentation to swear to the connection. So -----I apologize greatly to all y'all--I wasn't paying close enuff attention to how many generations I went back before I copy/pasted.I was trying to show that the boys should be connected (as far as we can tell right now) but I didn't know exactly how to do that without including Thomas I am usually much more careful than that about what I send out. Jack says we are still researching in that direction--at least we have a direction. Again I am sorry and more than willing to share what I have --it has taken us years and years to find out Benjamin's father was this Richard. First we thought it was George--and it took dozens of years to get that far. I hope y'all will forgive me for getting your hopes up--and not kick me out altogether--but maybe some of you have access to records about Thomas that can make this tie a definate and not a possible maybe. Stephanie
