Thanks Eva, an invite would help I think. Can you see my info? I am running into conflicting info on family members so would be good to clear up some of the questions. Is Liddy Irene Bowden in your line? I had her middle name as Jane and some one else as Irene. That is one question but if your not in that line you many not know. My mother is Martha Elizabeth Bowden Stevenson. I am Dawne Marie Stevenson Sutherland and I live in Florida. She is the daughter of William Colin Bowden of North Carolina. He was born August 23, 1871 in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina and died June 10, 1946 in Rex, North Carolina. He had several brothers and sisters, but I am not up-to-date. Want to pursue the ancestry. Is your relative in any of the census records? In the U.S. there is an every name census starting in 1850. I don't know where Crossmaglen is but a census is the place to start. Is there a place to get a copy of their will? Can you get property records? Church records are great too. I once got a copy of church records for another of my families which showed them getting into trouble for missing so many church services! In the olden days of genealogy there were many more people on lists like this and someone always seemed to be able to find things so we could help each other personally rather than just hoping to find it on Ancestry. I have only one Bowden name in my entire genealogy database. She was my g-g-grandmother, Margaret/Peggy [Bowden] McShane (c.1780 - 8 Sep 1853), and was born in [presumed] Armagh and is buried in Crossmaglen along with her husband, James McShane (c.1789 - 20 May 1862). They were married in the Upper Creggan Parish, Crossmaglen on 14 Jul 1799. I have been adequately successful in tracing their descendants, but have no clues to their ancestors. Any hints, links, or assistance provided will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike Maher Jacksonville, Florida [USA]

I agree with Wayne Bowden. The DNA is a great tool that can help point us in the right direction in our searches. My Uncle, George Bowden, was the one Wayne Bowden was able to make a connection with through the YDNA matches. My Bowden line goes back to John and Molly Bowden through their son, Elias Simpson Bowden, who settled in Fentress County, Tennessee, after his service in the War of 1812. Both! Many years ago an old researcher (alas no longer with us) Assured me that that there were four Bowden brothers who left Scotland to go to Northern Ireland circa 1600's. One went down to the South of Ireland where there is a town called Bowdenstown. Another brother went to the Carrickfergus area, one went abroad somewhere. I don't know where. The last one settled in County Down which is the one that I am descended from. Family lore says it is French. The family did use French words for Grandmother and Grandfather too. From what I have read some Bowons of French descent left France for other areas in England and Scotland, etc. They were Hugenots. I strongly suspect that these were my family too. My Bowdon/Bowden/Boudin/Bowdoin(even Bowdown) family is the southern branch. I started doing research on these folks about 15 years ago. I seem to have found the Northern U.S. Bowden families were not directly at least related to my Bowdons, some of whom spell their names Bowdon, some Bowden. I do have the will of my third great grandfather whose name is spelled two different ways in the same document. I have Thomas Bowdon born 1793 Chester County, NC. This is from a Bible record and could be 1793 or 1799 because the writing is difficult to read. I do not have the original Bible. I do have a list of their children, the first of whom was born in 1823. The family lived in a variety of places throughout the south. One of the family members settled in Limestone CO, TX. Among the places the family lived: The Carolinas, TN, AL, MS, and AR. I'd like to connect to others studying the southern Bowden families. They were people of some means as witnessed by the people they kept in slavery. Karen
