    3. Wonderful Tom! I think that all the genealogy that others have done in the past are great clues but without documentation, we should only use them as clues. It is good that you hold fast to YOUR research and not assume your late cousin to be absolutely correct. If everyone who comes across our various spellings of our names of Bowdoin/Bowden/Bowdon etc. would transcribe their findings, then we would have more to go on. I feel sure everyone has one little clue that would make a difference. Please post anything you find when you find it. Regards, Ruth

    1. Re: BOWDON of Granville Co, NC
    2. Hi Tom, I'm having the same trouble with my BOWDON family too, lack of evidence compunded by the fact that in early census records the family name was spelled BOWDON but that later some family members spelled in BOWDEN and in even one article in the newspaper it was spelled BOWDON and BOWDEN. There seemed to be a "whatever" approach to the name. To this day part of the BOWDON family spells the name with an O and the other part with an E. I am from Thomas Bowdon B 1793 in Chester CO SC who married Parmelia C. Jenkins. Their children were William Jordon, John O.,Francis Marion, Jasper D.L., Thomas Virgil William, Louise Travis, Benjamin Franklin, Victoria Ruth Caroline, Nancy Sarah Ann, and Columbia Caroline. The first child's birth place is unknown, the next 4 were born in Bedford Co, TN, the next 3 born in Lauderdale CO, AL, the next 2 in De Soto CO, MS, and the last child in Phillips CO, AR. If you have any BOWDON s in this list please let me know. 1. BOWDON of Granville Co, NC
    2. We often encounter family legends that have been passed down through the generations which are difficult to confirm with objective evidence. I have such a problem with John BOWDON of Granville Co, NC, son of William and Elizabeth BOWDOWN of Granville. A distant relative (J Walter Allen) who was an ardent genealogist proclaimed this family to be descended from the BOWDOIN family of Virginia (previously of Massachusetts and La Rochelle, France). Accordingly he spelled the name BOWDOIN, and I find many descendants of William and Elizabeth who have followed that spelling and implicitly, if not explicitly, that line of descent. As a descendant of John BOWDON I would be delighted to incorporate the BOWDOIN name and history in our family lineage. My problem is the lack of supporting evidence. (1) Allen never in any of his published articles or other writing that I have seen revealed the basis for his conclusion. (2) None of the original documents mentioning William BOWDOWN and his family used the BOWDOIN spelling. (3) Neither Allen nor anyone else has defined how William BOWDOWN fit into the known descendants of Jean BOWDOIN of Virginia as clained. (One descendant has conjectured that William BOWDOWN's name might have been John William BOWDOIN and thus the John BOWDOIN who was a son of Jean BOWDOIN. I know of no evidence to support this theory.) (4) In my opinion my cousin J Walter Allen was an unreliable writer on genealogical matters. In quoting from a Bowden will he spelled the name BOWDOIN although that spelling does not appear in the will. He also claimed that John BOWDON's wife, Judith, was a FARRAR, daughter of William FARRAR. Here again he never to my knowledge revealed any source for this allegation. There is a marriage bond in Granville Co for Judith FARRAR and Jesse HAYS, and I have found no other Judith FARRAR in the time period who could have been the wife of John BOWDON. In short, I believe Allen invented family con- nections that cannot be supported by documentary evidence. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but I'll need more than Allen's unsubstantiated claims. 3. Can anyone tell me any more about this man and his ancestors and descendants??? I found this article in a folder at the Monroe County, Georgia Historicl Society. Does anyone have access to a copy of this book???? If so, I would dearly love a copy of the index listing all the people the book covers. Ruth Here is the article: Book: Memoirs of Georgia, Volume 1 Published in Atlanta, Georgia, The Southern Historical Association, 1895. The cover says it contains: 'Historical Accounts of the State's Civil, Military, Industrial and Professional Interests, and Personal Sketches of Many of It's People' Page 288 JOSHUA W. Bowdoin, farmer, Adairsville, Bartow Co., Ga., son of Joshua and Beersheba Bowdoin, was born in Monroe County, Ga., Nov 2, 1832. Some years preceding the revolutionary war two brothers James and John Bowdoin, emigrated from England to America. James settled in Massachusetts where he acquired large wealth and founded the now celebrated seat of *********** at Brunswick; (then in Massachusetts, now in Maine), known as ************. John Bowdoin, the other brother and the great grandfather, subject of this sketch, was a Presbyterian minister, and settled in Virginia. James, ****** ****** born in Virginia, and when only nine years old entered the patriot army and served under Gen. Washington and Greene until peace was proclaimed and independence acknowledged. After the war he went to North Carolina, and subsequently emigrated to Hamburg, S. C. In 1806 he moved into Georgia, purchased considerable land in what is now Monroe county, on which he settled and lived the remainder of his days. He married Miss Equilla Williams, and to them nine children--seven sons and two daughters--were born. Joshua, the father of the subject of this sketch, was the youngest child of James and Equilla Bowdoin, and was born in South Carolina in 1802, but was raised in what is now Monroe county. He was really a pioneer of Cass county, having settled on land now lying in Gordon county in 1833. He purchased 160 acres situated near Adairsville, now the home of his son, Joshua W. To this original purchase he afterward added until he owned 1,040 acres in one body, and a number of smaller tracts. Of the main body he cleared about 500 acres and was one of the largest and most prominent planters in the county. He was an active partisan and an unswerving democrat, and served many years as a justiace of the inferior court. He was an ordained preacher of the Baptist church and preached in middle Georgia and east Tennessee. He was instrumental in establishing many churches within the extensive boundaries of his work, among them Mt. Gilead, of which he was the faithful pastor forty years. 3. Hi Everyone, I think I have been helping someone look for a couple of people named GOSS who are buried in Dalhart, Texas but can't remember who. Is there anyone on the Bowden list that I am helping with this? I have the info but won't get the photos of the headstones until Monday. The two people are: Katherine Goss and Lucian Livingston Goss. For some reason I am thinking these two are connected to the Bowden surname. My TOTAl apologies if I have lost the person's e-mail AND name who I am looking this up for. Hope this message makes some sense! Ruth
