Hello! Does anyone have a Robert Bowden, born 1817 in England, died 1879 in Cavan, Ireland, married to Anne McFaden? Thanks! Amy Leone
I am definitely interested in the Bowdens of Cuba Kentucky. My grandmother's parents (Isaiah and Melinda (Emerson) Bowden) are found in Cuba Kentucky in 1880 and she was probably born there or in Mayfield. The given names Westward, Westwood, Westland, as well as Eastwood, Eastward, and other variations occurs several times in various branches of the family, but I have next to nothing about the bearers of this rather strange name. North Carolina and Tennessee figure prominently in many branches of my family too, so I am interested in those lines as well -- they inevitably tie in somewhere. I have you recorded as the source for some of my data, some of which I've verified or in a few cases corrected from other sources. I gave the particulars of the Bowden Bible in my previous post, which see. It is included as part of a compilation of Bible Records of Graves County, so of course it is subject to any errors or omissions that might have occured in the transcription and subsequent publishing of that transcription. Some cautions with this source may be in order. The record contains annotations and data collected obviously from sources other than what was actually recorded in the bible at the time of the events. Someone evidently did some research or put down some things from memory, adding that to the original entries. There is no clear trail of where the various data originated, so there could be some errors. Generally, my gut feeling is that most of it is probably pretty accurate. Graves County Kentucky Bible Records is found at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, which I go to frequently. The call number is 976.993 /d2g v,1-2. To my knowledge it is not available on microfilm, and the library catalogue lists only the book. You may be able to obtain this book from Simmon Historical Publications in Melber Kentucky, if it is still in print or if there are any copies left. The address on my June 1999 price sheet from them is 2015 SR 2195, PO Box 66, Melber KY 42069-0066. The phone number at that time was 270-856-3552. The book is not shown on the price sheet but they may be able to tell you where to get it. Also the Graves County Genealogical Society in Mayfield Kentucky, or the Mayfield Printing Company, may be able to help. I do not know their address of either. Here are the particulars again: Graves County Kentucky Bible Records, 2 volumes in one binding (Mayfield Kentucky: Graves County Genealogical Society, 1966, printed by Simmons Historical Publications Melber Kentucky) volume one, page 78, Bowden Bible. Edinburgh, printed 1762 by Alexander Kincaid, His Majesty's printer MDCCLXII, purchased by John Bowden on 14 Feb 1767. Data: John Bowden His Book. Bought 14th February 1767, price 8 pounds, 13 shillings, 4 pence ... said John Bowden was born 10th March 1717 and Peggy his wife Born 4th Oct 1726 and we was married 10th September 1744 ... As you can see, some of the information was apparently recorded by John Bowden's own hand, so surely that part must be accurate. Margaret Webb Elias was from Isle of Wight County, Virginia. I am told by my family that the Bowdens of this line were of English origin. They always pronounced it Bouden (ou as in house). If there is any Indian blood I would be surprized (but I've been surprized before). Perhaps someone who has researched Indian surnames could shed more light. The later generations were of the "Old School" Baptist persuasion, but I do not know how far back that affiliation went. There is a periodical of that tradition entitled "Signs of the Times", published I think in Middleton New York, which contained a couple of Bowden obituaries. The following source is useful and interesting: Graves County Kentucky Bible Records, 2 volumes in one binding (Mayfield Kentucky: Graves County Genealogical Society, 1966, printed by Simmons Historical Publications Melber Kentucky) volume one, page 78, Bowden Bible. Edinburgh, printed 1762 by Alexander Kincaid, His Majesty's printer MDCCLXII, purchased by John Bowden on 14 Feb 1767. Data: John Bowden His Book. In the same source I found the following (my summary): The Bowdens were farmers. The uncertainties of the weather were of major importance to them, and unusual weather conditions were a matter of note. The family Bible records some of these events. On October 23rd, 1749, "their came a very Large snow". Severe winds were noted on 8 September 1769, 11 August 1778, 2 September 1784, and 4 September 1785. In January of 1792 "Theare Came a large Sleet". On September 5th, 1775 "a very severe Gust, and the Largest fresh that Ever was kown[sic] in blackwater" (I assume he means freshwater fish). The annotation adds that Blackwater Creek ran through both Isle of Wight and Southhampton Counties in Virginia, and formed part of the boundaries of several Bowden farmlands. So from this the precise location of John Bowden's farm can probably, with a little research, be ascertained. The annotation also adds that the Turner family of Isle of Wight Virginia were close friends of the Bowdens of Henry County Tennessee. Some of the Bowdens owned slaves and a few were quite wealthy. I beg to differ - From a family surname history my Father had compiled on the Bowden name; "Though shrouded by the mists of time, the chronicles of Scotland reveal the early records of the Norman surname BOWDEN..........Diligent analysis by professional researchers using such ancient manuscripts as the Domesday book, the Ragman rolls, the Wace poem, the honour roll of the Battel abbey, etc, etc.........shows the first record of the name Bowden was found in Cheshire where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. They were originally of Bodin in Normandy." What a coincidence! Baudouin is precisely identical with the French spelling (often rendered Baldwin in English) for the counts of Flanders. I have before me a copy of "La Flandre Sous Les Premiers Comtes" which refers to "Baudouin Ier" (Baldwin the First) who lived in the ninth century. The name persisted in this form for many centuries and was brought to this country (US) perhaps by Pierre Baudouin (now often rendered Bowdoin) in the seventeenth century. Tom (rootsnva@aol.com)
