Hi Everyone First time on this List. My interest is Grace Bowden christened 26 Mar 1781 in Wendron CON Eng Father John Bowden and Mother Frances. Grace married William Williams 24 May 1810 also in Wendron. Would anyone have a connection with this line or information. Regards Judith from Auckland New Zealand
Thanks to everyone who have responded to my posting thus far. That was fast indeed. But, to further explain my "Bowden brick wall", I am posting again. My great-great-grandfather, John Bass of Warren County, Mississippi, was a slave before the Civil War. Somehow, someway, he and at least four siblings (Eliza, Minnie, Oscar, & Thomas Hatcher) ended up in Warren County, Mississippi, perhaps around 1860. John Bass (still don't know why he took the Bass surname and his siblings chose Hatcher) was born in North Carolina in 1845. He was found in the Freedman's Bank Records of Vicksburg and his father's name was given as Tom Bowden. His mother was named Beady. There were no Bowdens in Warren County MS (as far as I can tell), so apparently his father, Tom/Thomas Bowden, remained in North Carolina. Somehow, John Bass received an education before the War. I have a record showing his signature. Also, he was a corporal in the Civil War with the 49th Regiment of the USCT. So, that's basically my brick wall in my Tom Bowden link. Much of my future research will have to be trying to figure out this Bowden link to North Carolina. Somewhere in No. Carolina, there may have been a Bowden family who had a slave named Thomas. Any leads, clues, etc. will be greatly, greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone have Bowdens with ties to a Hatcher/Hatchell Family in N.C. Again, thanks. Melvin J. Collier
Recently found a record showing my great-great-grandfather's name as being Thomas Bowden. My great-great-grandfather, John, was born in 1845 somewhere in N.C. I am clueless as to where in NC he came from, nor do I have anymore info concerning his father, Thomas. Is anyone familiar with any Thomas Bowdens in North Carolina? Thanks. Melvin J. Collier

Hi, I hope you're looking for a good mystery because I have one regarding my Neely (Neeley/Nealy) family. My most important question about the Neelys is: Was Joseph E. Neely (born 1862 in North Carolina) a son of Edmond (born about 1823 in Horry County, SC) and Elizabeth Nealy from Columbus County, NC? Here's what I think was going on, but I need someone to confirm this: (1) Eligha (born about 1776) and Winneford Nealy moved from Ireland to North Carolina. (2) One of their sons, Edmond Nealy, was born in Horry County, SC but was in Columbus County, NC when he served in the Confederacy. In 1860 he, his wife, and children were living in Columbus County, NC. His wife was Elizabeth and their known children were: Dalmon (Datmon), J. H., Lester, Richmond, and Louisa. Was Joseph E. also one of their children? After the war the 1870 census shows Elizabeth with her son Dalmon (Datmon) in Horry County, SC. (3) Joseph E. Neely (Neeley/Nealy) was born in North Carolina in 1862. He married Charlotte (Sharlotte) A. Lee (born in 1853) from Horry County, SC, and they had three known children: Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr. (1888-1928), Ada C. (born 1892), and Ruthie B. (born 1894). (4) Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr., my paternal grandfather, married Nettie King, and they moved to Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia where all their children and grandchildren were born. My Kings are an even bigger mystery. They come from along the border of South Carolina and North Carolina. My most important question about the Kings is: Were Lonnie O. King and Nettie King truly the children of George Edward King and Margaret Elizabeth Turnage King? (1) Eddie (probably George Edward) King (born about 1869 probably in Chesterfield County, SC or somewhere along the border of the Carolinas) married Margaret (maybe Marguerite) (probably Margaret Elizabeth Turnage) (born about 1870 probably in Chesterfield County, SC). One or both of them supposedly had French ancestry. They had at least three children, Lonnie O. (1890-1931), Pauline (born 1894), and Nettie King (1896-1958). After Margaret's death, Eddie probably remarried, probably to Alma Cauthin Kelly. (2) With his first wife, Lizzie Huggins, Lonnie O. King (1890-1931) had at least two children, Pauline King (married name unknown) and Rembert Lonzo King (1909-1969). By his second wife, Mary Margaret Chappell (1896-1977), he had a daughter, Helen Chappell King (born 1928), who married Jesse Lewis Greene (1923-2000). (3) Rembert Lonzo King married Nina Lee Bristow, and they had at least two children, Ramona King (married name unknown) and Marion Douglas King (1928-1998). In 1936 Rembert Lonzo King lived in Hamer, Dillon County, SC. His son, Marion Douglas King, married Mina S. (maiden name unknown), and they had at least three children. (4) Lonnie King lived in Saint Paul's, Robeson County, NC when he died, and he is buried near Raeford, Hoke County, NC. Meanwhile, Lonnie O. King's sister, Nettie King (1896-1958), my paternal grandmother, married Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr. (1888-1928), and they moved to Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. They had two sons who survived infancy, Joseph Bowden Neely, Jr. (1923-1974), my father, and James Robert Neely, Sr. (born 1927). Joseph Bowden Neely, Jr. married Kathleen Bell (born 1922), and they had one daughter, me. James Robert Neely, Sr. married Betty Douglas (born 1927), and they had two sons. I have spent years tracking down just this little information. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you. Cathy, There are LOTS of Bowdens in Maine & New England. My first suggestion to you would be to try and determine first if yours are the English Bowdens or the French Bowdoins. Some (well-meaning) people would have you believe that all Bowdens/Bowdoins are all descended from Pierre Baudoin - this is NOT true. How far back have you gone? My Bowdens/Bowdoins are all of English descent. You may email me privately if you wish or through the list. I'd be more than happy to share any info I have with you. Do any of the Bowden researchers have informaiton on BENJAMIN BOWDEN AND ELIZABETH DUNCKAN, married 1798, North Carolina? Thanks for any help. Pat pacone@txk.net
I think all of my sibling Bowdens stayed in Ireland. My ggrandfather was the only immigrant. But just to make sure, are any of you descended from Bowdens from Cavan County, Ireland? Amy

If any of you find any more info on Valona >Gano Bowdoin(Bowden), from Georgia or Alabama, or the descendants of John >Wesley Bowdoin(Bowden) who died in El Paso in l907, I'd very much >appreciate hearing from you.cb
I'd like to say "Merry Christmas" to all too - from Middle Georgia where Bowden's go back to at least the early 1800's. Hello to ALL, I just want to say THANK YOU to all of you who has helped me in my research for my various family names. I appreciate all the information and kind help that was given to me thru this Mail List. It means a lot to know I'm not the only one who has BRICK WALLS or MISSING FAMILY MEMBERS. <grin> Lord knows I wouldn't have gotten this far in my research with out all the help from my new cousins in crime. <grin> The people who maintain these Mail Lists are ANGLES in their own rights. Without them this would not be possible. I Thank You All. Please have a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. I pray that the New Year will bring us all closer to our goals. With friends like you all, life gets a little easier. A kind word, A smile on the net, A new lead to follow and a new branch to research helps. You all are very special people and I count myself lucky to have been able to meet you and correspond with all you at one time or another. I also ask those of you I may have offended unintentionally to please forgive me. I make mistakes but do not mean to offend. Sometimes I just don't think correctly. <grin>. Long hours on the net sometimes make the mind numb and words are printed without thinking. Thanks, Charla
