Hello List members, My name is Ian Marr and I have been the list administrator for some time. However, due to mounting health problems, I am forced to give up this role. I have completed the task required to "orphan" the list, so it is now available for any of you to take the reins, so to speak. If you would like to become the administrator for this list, simply follow the steps details below: 1. Go to http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ 2. Enter the list name in the "Find a Mailing List" box and click on FIND 3. A list of potential matches will be displayed (left hand side of page). Click on the name you entered in 2. above 4. Details for the list will then be displayed 5. At the bottom of this page, it should say "This list is adoptable". If not, try again later (or it may already have been adopted). 6. If it does invite adoption, click on the "Visit the Mailing List Request Form" link 7. On the next page click on "Request a Mailing List - New or Adoption" 8. Complete the details and submit the form. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when the necessary behind the scenes actions have been completed. You may then access the list as administrator, using your e-mail address and password specified in 8. above and make whatever changes you wish to the way the list operates. Hi Gayle, I found them on 1871 spelt as BAWDEN it would appear they are a Devonshire family and the ones I am working on are only BOWDEN and in Northumberland. Katherine, Be sure to check Bowdoin College in Maine, They do have some family trees. I have talked to them in the past and they were very helpful even though my Bowdoin/Bowdon/Bowden families were not there. When Bowdon families got to the U.S. there seems to have been a split north and south. My Bowdon family lived in various places in the south. Bowdoin's can be seen in Maine and Massachusetts and lots more. Hello, Thank you for looking……William H.Bowden was b. 4 Jul 1830 in Parranzabuloe, Devon, England according to Paula Jones and she got the information from the 1871 English census. Amelia Watts is seen in the 1851 English census as 19 years old and born in Parranzabuloe but it says Cornwall, England…..Their oldest child was Samuel and there are 6 children. My great grandmother is Amelia Frances and she was b. 24 may 1867 in Cornwall. Amelia Frances Bowden married Charles E. D. Fulmore and their story is heartbreaking. Charles E.D. Fulmore went off the to the gold mines and left Amelia Frances with a newborn baby and 4 other toddlers, in a tar paper shack, never to come back again. She went to a mental institution and lived there until she died. She did the sewing for the institution. I think she probably just had post partem but they didn’t understand it then. Amelia Frances Watts (mother to Amelia Frances Bowden) had parents named Thomas and Betsy Watts. My grandmother ,Ida Belle Fulmore, daughter of Amelia Frances who died in the institution, wrote a story for Amelia F. Watts Bowden when she lived in England and I don’t know how she knew but it says that she was the seamstress for “her Lady” and they supposedly lived in a castle. I don’t know when they left UK and she and her daughter lived in the castle so could have been a widow. I don’t know. The children of William H & Amelia Watts Bowden were: Samuel, Edith, Lavenia, Susan, Amelia Frances, and Caroline and all born in the UK. According to Ida Belle Fulmore (my grandmother) , the first child Samuel , her mother's brother, was a mining engineer for the English Government in Africa. Was married but later divorced or separated….no name for his wife or if he had children. Nothing about Edith other than she was b. in England Lavenia b. 26 Jan 1857, m. Thomas Barker Susan b. 1861 Amelia Francis (my g. grandmother) info above Caroline was b. 3 Jul 1868 and m. a Mr. Seavy in Canada That is the info I have. I am not too good about how to present it so if any questions of course I will try to help. I was wondering if Watson might be Watts and the name changed? Or was read wrong? Oh my goodness….thanks for your time. Karen, Thanks for the interesting info on the Bowden tree. I downloaded documents at the library onto a stick but have not had the time to go through them yet. I am glad to keep you informed on what I find if you like. My grandmother said was French but I never knew if it was her mother's or father's side on her side so that is good to know. Hi Katherine, My ancestry membership is no longer active and I never put my family info on it, just wrote to a couple of people there. People come and go quickly on Ancestry. I have found most of my info from family. The Bowden branch paid for professional genealogists to research the line. That was long before computers so it isn't in any computer form, just pen and ink. They were from France but may have come to the U.S. by way of England. They were Huguenots. Their earliest U.S. records are found in the south, in the Carolinas. The Bible record said Chester, North Carolina. Members of the family spell the name Bowdon and even Bowdoin lending more credence to the French heritage. The progenitor was Thomas Bowdon/Bowden. He was born in either 1793 or 1773. Because the record is in pen and paper from the Bible, it is difficult to tell the difference. I always thought it was 1793. Thomas Bowdon was well to do and left property and people held in slavery which was an expensive proposition. Hello, It appears that my Bowdens came to the U.S. in the mid 1700s. The reason I have written is because so many of the names are familiar here. Thomas Bowden is rarely seen in records before that date. He is seen in the Carolinas by some unofficial accounts as being born in 1793. William is a prominent name in the family in fact the eldest child was named William and a later child had William as his middle name. One of the offspring was Benjamin Bowden (sometimes spelled Bowdon) who remarried when his wife died. He married a much younger woman and they had twins. One of the twins was named Irene. There is also a Willis. Karen
Hi Eva, No I cannot access it, I don't have full membership and can only see info when I go to the State Library and use their computers. An invite would be great. I have been working on the Bowden branch of my tree so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Katherine On Oct 27, 2013, at 8:51 AM, Bernard Cambi wrote: > Hi Eve, > > That would be very helpful. Karen, I do not have a full membership with Ancestry so an invite would be most helpful to see what you have listed. I go to the State Library to access info but at home I am limited to my own info. Our Bowden connection may be way up the line. Can you tell me where they originated from in Europe and what nationality they are? My grandmother said French but not sure. My Benjamin J Bowden married Ann Bowles and they had 7 children, their son William A was my GG grandfather. I don't see two marriages but I don't have the birth dates for any of the other children so not sure about twins. I would greatly appreciate a guest invite to see if I can see your tree at home. I will be having shoulder surgery in a week so hope to spend some time on the site during my recovery.
