Ok, I'm pretty sure I found the family in the 1900 Census... White Township, Cambria Co, PA John F Burtuff (one of the more unusual spellings I've seen) born Jan 1857, age 43, married 3 years (19 crossed out, maybe length of 1st marriage? or total years married???), he and parents born PA, saw mill laborer Maim, wife, born Sept 1872, age 27, married 3 years, gave birth to 1 child 1 child living, she and parents born PA Harry, b 1884, age 16, he and parents born PA, laborer Stella, b Dec 1885, age 14 Forest, b July 1888, age 11, at school Milfred, b Fed 1893, age 7 Robert Keaster (?), boarder, b Sept 1895, age 4 Maybe Robert is Maim's (Mame's) son? The 1890 Census could have told us the children's mother's name. John is such a common name and I did not find an obvious choice for this John in the 1880 Census. The varieties of spellings were not all showing up in my searches. Using the name "Forest" and a basic combination of facts, leaving out the surname, helped me find them in 1900. That's all that I have for now. Stephanie In a message dated 1/22/2009 7:41:36 P.M. Who knows, my little twig of the family tree may be useful to someone. The earliest relative that I know of would be John Bottorf of Flemington, Pa.. My great-grandfather. I know from hearing from my grandmother that his first wife died when the children were young, They had 3 boys - Harry, Milfred and Forrest, and 1 sister named Stella. After his wife died he had a housekeeper named Mame who was abusive to the children, and they left home as soon as they were able. It is not known if he ever married Mame. Milfred stayed in the Lock Haven area Forrest moved to the mid-west (maybe Indiana), and Harry (my grandfather) moved to Williamsport, Pa. and then to Hagerstown, Md. (my home-town) .. I did find this article (attached hopefully) from the Lock Haven newspaper. Central Pa. was lumber country after the Civil War. I'm sure that this would be the same John Bottorf because my father said that his grandfather was from Flemmington and worked in the saw-mill and had a "drooping eye". I did find 1 photo of him in my grandmother's photo album, taken later in his life. My grandparents never wanted to talk about my grandfather's childhood, so I'm sure that it wasn't pleasant. My dad at one time started some family research, but he always said that the records were destroyed in a fire at the Court House Now that my parents are gone and I'm retired, I think of all of the questions that I should have asked. Thank you for replying Harry F. Bottorf III **************Inauguration '09: Get complete coverage from the nation's capital.
