    2. I've been touched and drawn in by the Clell Bottorff story and I'm very intrigued by every new little tidbit. So I want to say thank you Cindy and everyone else who has kept this list updated. The original story/posts were awhile ago. I personally wouldn't mind a refresher/update about what we know about the orphaned children. I personally don't need anymore on the murder suicide, but if anyone else needs to be brought up to speed, please speak up and those on top of the story, please help out. And, of course, if there's anything new to add on anything (murder suicide included), please let us know. Thanks! **************Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. City's Best 2008. 3. I have been researching this family in order to try to get medical history for my best friend. Her biological father was Clell Bottorff, Junior. He was adopted by Flossie and Clyde Rees after his parents died. I have newspaper coverage of their deaths with great details. I have pictures of Clell and Grace as well as pictures of the children. I know quite a bit about their adoptive parents and what happened to each child. I recently located Earl who was just 2-years-old when his parents died. He lives in Dayton, Ohio. I wrote to him as well as spoke to him by phone. He lived with his daughter until recently. He is now in a nursing home. He suffers from dementia. He shared a lot of stories with me, but many of them turned out to be false. I am sure they were real in his mind. His daughter knows very little about her father's past. He left for work one day when she was just 5 months old, and he never returned. When she had children of her own, she wanted them to know their grandfather. She worked through Social Security to locate her father. By this time he was getting old and sick. He gladly returned to Dayton and began living with her. During the past year I have accumulated hundreds of pages of information concerning the Bottorff family. At the moment I am trying to locate the obit for the child who was just 11 months old when his parents died. He was born Frederick Arnold Bottorff, but he was called Jack. He was born in Jackson, Michigan not too long after Clell moved his family there. When the children were taken back to Hedrick, Iowa he stayed with his grandmother Morgan for a short time until his Uncle John Vernal Morgan adopted him. Then his name became Jack Arnold Morgan. He was living in that household and using that name when the 1930 census was taken. Jack joined the US Air Force and had a 26 year career. He served in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. He married a Japanese lady whose maiden name was Kusonoki. According to the SSDI his last known address was San Bernardino, California. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Riverside, Ca. The California death records indicate he died on March 19, 1996 at the age of 72. I have been in touch with the libraries and newspaper offices at San Bernardino and Riverside. They found no trace of an obit for him in March, 1996. Just last night I received a note indicating he was buried on 4-23-1996. I immediately thought that was a very long time to keep a body for burial unless he was cremated and his ashes were saved until relatives from Japan could arrive for a memorial service. Of course, I am speculating. I began a new search yesterday hoping I can locate his obit in the April, 1996 records. The records at Rootsweb indicate he left a wife and 3 living children when he died. I would very much like to find living relatives to try to get medical history and learn if perhaps Jack's brother, Clell, had more children than just my best friend. She never knew her father, but that is another story. If you are interested, I can give you details on that too. I was able to locate a death record for Marylyn Joyce Davis whom I believe to be Jack Morgan's daughter. The record indicates her mother's maiden name was Kusonoki, and her father's surname was Morgan. She was born on July 22, 1955 in Japan. I suspect this took place when he was stationed in Japan with the US Air Force. Marylyn died in Truckee, Nevada County, Ca. in 1989. So far I have not been able to find an obit for her although I found some new information today that may help. I will be glad to share any information I have. Just let me know what you want. Patsy Williams from East Texas P.S. Clell Bottorff, Senior and Helena Grace Morgan Bottorff were school sweethearts. They married in October, 1915 while living in Hedrick. Their first child, Frances, was born in Iowa. Clell moved his family to Minnesota and remained there for the birth of the next 4 children....Louise, Helen,Clell-Junior, and Earl. Then he moved to Jackson, Michigan before the last child was born....Frederick Arnold Bottorff...called Jack. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 11:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BOTTORFF] Clell Bottorff Genealogy I've been touched and drawn in by the Clell Bottorff story and I'm very intrigued by every new little tidbit. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: FW: Bottorff Genealogy Cindy, This is what I got from Nancy this morning. Later in the day I made contact with Miles Bacon. He is a colorful character. He is 72-years-old, and he has done genealogy since the 1960s. He knew so much more than I expected him to know. His 93-yr-old sister is in a nursing home where he lives, but he said her mind is still good. He said she can’t see or hear worth a hoot, but she still has a good mind. He will visit her to see if she can help. They live in Ottumwa. He also told me who adopted each of the Bottorff children. He is related to the Bond family who adopted Earl. Albert Bond married Mr. Bacon’s first cousin. He also knew the story about their son eating rat poisen when he was just 2-yrs-old. After he died Albert thought it might help his wife if they adopted Earl. She grieved the rest of her life and never really accepted Earl. Earl told me not long ago that they were good to him, but he also said it was very apparent that she did not want him. Since he has told me some other wild stories, I was not sure I believed that one. Today Mr. Bacon confirmed it. I hope to make a trip to Iowa later in the summer. Mr. Bacon said he would take me to the cemeteries. That should be fun. He also said he knew the William Robertson who married Marian L. Beck….Louise Bottorff who was adopted by the Beck family. Mr. Robertson is dead, and he was not sure about Marian. He does think they have a son, and he will try to get contact information for me. Isn’t that great !!! The information on the internet indicates there is a living son. Thanks again, Patsy P.S. The email I sent to Charles Lanz (the contributor of the information online) was returned. I found it in my spam file. I resent it to another email address I found later today. Maybe it will reach him. He may know the whereabouts of the living child. Mr. Lanz was born in 1919 so he may know a lot. ____________________________________ From: Nancy C. They left 6 young children who were taken to Hedrick, Iowa to be cared for by relatives. (Clell and Grace Bottorff were born in Hedrick, and they still had relatives living there.) In the spring of 1925 five of the six children were adopted by various families living in or near Hedrick. I recently uncovered a letter written by Flossie Rees in August of 1959. Claude and Flossie Rees are the couple who adopted Clell Bottorff, Junior in May, 1925. Since his siblings called their brother Junior, Mr. and Mrs. Rees changed his name to Clell Junior Rees. The letter written by Flossie Rees stated the following: The oldest girl, Frances, was 9. An aunt by the name of Barr who lived in Montana took Frances. Frances died in 1953. I can't find a Frances Barr nor Frances Bottorff on 1930 census in Montana of the right age. however I did find a Frances Barr age 13 (right age) as d/o Marie E Barr age 53 on 1930 cen Hennepin Minn (this is where Clell Sr was in 1920) The next child was Louise who was 7. Mrs. Rees stated in her letter that Louise was adopted by Barney Beck of Hedrick. She also stated Mr. Beck changed Louise's name to Marion. She later married Bill Rosenbaum and had a large family. (Note: I located the Beck family in the 1930 Iowa census, but it was not the Barney Beck family. Louise (Marion---age 11) is living in the D. Ernest Beck household.) Louise (Marion) is listed as Marion L. Beck, age 11, and she is listed as a foster-daughter. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Hi Cindy, Thanks for your note. When I started trying to help Jim find the “missing generation”, he told me he knew he tied into Martin Bottorff, but he wasn’t sure through which of his children. Other researchers had previously tried to attach John W. Bottorff to John Jacob Bottorff, I think. I looked through the LDS records and with marriage records, census records, birth records, etc. was able to tie Jim’s g-grandfather, John W. Bottorff, to Martin Bottorff’s son, John W. Bottorff who was born in December, 1818. He is the one who married Elizabeth Graves. John and Elizabeth divorced several years after their marriage. Elizabeth later married Jacob Deuser and John W. Bottorff used the Deuser name in the 1850 census. The kids could have been outside playing or in school when the census taker came along, and he just assumed all of the names were Deuser. When the younger John W. Bottorff married Jane Reed in 1857 his name was Bottorff on the marriage record. They moved to Wapello County, Iowa and lived near Jane’s parents. He used the name Bottorff then and throughout the remainder of his life. I was snooping through some of the Ancestry.Com world records a few nights ago. I saw a nice long list of information concerning Henry Bottorff and Dorcas Chambers. I assumed you already had that information. I finished my search and made a booklet for my bridge friend. The information she gave me to begin with was her name was Bottomoff and the family came from Russia. None of that was correct, but it was certainly interesting to learn the correct spelling and that they came from Germany. We plan to meet on Monday, January 28. I think she will be real surprised with what I was able to uncover. Many thanks for your help. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. I had a real break-through on the Bottorff line. I made a donation to the Keokuk County Historical Society in Sigourney, Iowa. The nice lady sent me some very helpful information and the name of two sisters who still live in that area. One is 77 and the other is 80. I corresponded with Mary Ballensky whose father was Lon Bottorff. She did not know a lot because her parents divorced when she was a teenager; however, she knew older relatives. They were able to give me the tip I needed. I was looking for documentation as to the parents of John W. Bottorff. Mrs. Ballensky said this older relative told her John was an only child, but he had several half brothers and sisters. She also knew that John’s mother married a man by the name of Deuser. I had previously been unable to locate John as a 13-year-old boy in the census records. Sure enough I found him with his mother in the Deuser household using that name. That opened up a whole new world as I got the names of his half brothers and sisters. Then all of the other census records began to make a lot more sense. Jim Bottorff and I compared notes and determined that John W. Bottorff was the son of another John W. Bottorff who married Elizabeth Graves in 1837. We found their marriage record. They divorced about 1842. John married a lady whose name was Lucinda _____ and they lived in Washington County, Indiana. He was Martin Bottorff’s son so he apparently lived there to be close to his family. Elizabeth later married Jacob Deuser. This link was what Jim had been looking for, and it was what I needed to complete my Bottorff Family History. Thanks again for the email and for helping me with my research on the Bottorff line. On the morning of January 20, 1925, Clell shot Grace and then turned the gun on himself leaving 6 orphans with the oldest one being just 9 years old. I found a newspaper article giving details. I tried to follow my friend's direct line, but I do remember seeing a Henry Bottorff. He is the son of Martin Bottorff. My friend's father was Clell Bottorff, Junior....one of the 6 orphans. All of the children were brought back to Hedrick, Iowa and adopted by families in the community. Clyde and Flossie Rees adopted Clell, Junior. When he was a soldier during WWII, he was stationed at Camp Maxey near Paris, Tx. He met and married my friend's mother. After they were expecting Sandra, he was shipped overseas. When the family did not hear from him again they checked with the Army and learned he was married when he married my friend's mother. She got an annulment, and 2 years later she married a man she knew from high school. He adopted Sandra, and she grew up thinking he was her real father. I just finished a book for her, but I did not try to include anything except her direct line. I did find many other Bottorff families while searching. My friend and I hope to get to Wapello and Keokuk County, Iowa in July or August of this year. The contacts I made during my search are such nice people. I am anxious to meet them. Patsy from Texas P.S. I have a contact from my Bean-Beene line who has a Bottorff connection from Clark County, Indiana. In fact, he still lives there. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Merri Vinton Sent: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 12:05 PM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Subject: [BOTTORFF] BOTTORFF-FRIEKER-HOKE: Clark Co IN I am descended from John Henry BOTTORFF & Sophia FRIEKER>>John Bottorff & Elizabeth HOKE>>Andrew Bottorf>Elizabeth MILLS. 3. Hi Mike, I believe your Henry, son of Martin Bottorff, is a brother to John Bottorff born in December of 1818. My interest extends through this John Bottorff. This John Bottorff married Elizabeth Graves in Indiana. They had one son, John Wesley Bottorff, before they divorced. The older John remarried and lived the remainder of his life in Washington County, Indiana. Elizabeth Graves Bottorff later married Jacob Deuser. John Wesley Bottorff married Jane Reed in Clark County, Indiana. They moved to Wapello County, Iowa by 1860. They are listed in the 1860 census with one child. Other children came along later, and one of those children was William Bottorff. William had 3 children: Clell, Carl, and Zua. Clell had 6 children one of which was Clell, Junior. It is with Clell, Junior that my interest lies. Patsy from Texas

    3. Search for Bottorff cemeteries and Clark County cemeteries. The Bottorff settlement Springtown is outside Charlestown on High Jackson road. The cemetery is still there, I think the house with the spring in the cellar has been destroyed. I am planning a trip to Clark County, Indiana next week. Can anyone tell me where the older ones are buried and how to get to the cemeteries? Are there remains of the old "home place" or any other Bottorff landmarks I should see? Thanks.
