Not knowing John's date of birth, or date of death, or even his middle name, or his wife's name makes finding information a bit difficult. My grandmother would talk about her childhood, but not much was ever said about my grandfather's. I think my sister has my grandmother's bible which may have some info, in it. We will be out of town for a few days but when we return I'll try to come up with a group sheet, but now the only dates that I can be sure of are my parents birth, marriage and death dates. I received an e-mail from Zelpha Pottorff Ray from Arkansas who says sthat she has researched the family name and has 5 pages of info. she would send me. I think that she has the right branch of the tree since she knows my full name and date of birth. I'll contact her and see where this leads. Once again, Thank you for your help. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: Bottorff Hi Sandy, As you know I have been searching for Mary Turner, Helen Bottorff Roop’s daughter who was the informant on Helen’s death certificate. Sometimes I assume too much. I assumed Mary probably lived in Portland. I went to the white pages and then called every Mary Turner I saw listed in Portland. Of course, I was disappointed when I did not find her. I decided I would contact the Portland library. I find when I just ask for a “look-up” I usually get a note saying nothing was found. I sent an email and told them I would make a donation to the library if they could furnish me with a copy of Helen’s obit. Well, I got it today. Here is what it says: Helen Thompson A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 1994, at Bible Temple Chapel. Mrs. Thompson died October 6 at age 76. She was born March 27, 1918, in Hedrick, Iowa, and moved to Portland in 1930. (I do not believe this is accurate. I believe she was born in 1920 in Minnesota. In the 1930 Keokuk County, Iowa census Helen is listed as a 10-year-old girl in the John A. Roop household. According to a letter written by Flossie Rees, Helen married Oscar Chiarini on July 22, 1939. I suspect it was more like 1940 when they moved to Portland.) Disposition by cremation. Surviving are her sons, Danny Thompson and Terry Lee Hobbs of Portland; daughter, Mary Kaye Turner of Sacramento, California; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. I just got home from a bridge game so it is too late tonight, but early tomorrow I will begin a search for her sons in Portland and her daughter in California. Helen died on October 6, and her service was not until October 10. I suspect time had to be allowed for Mary to get there from California. BUT, why would the boys wait for Mary to get there to furnish information for the death certificate??? I suspect her children know very little about her past. Had Helen talked to them about her past, I suspect they would have known her correct birthday and place of birth. Plus, Mary listed Helen’s father as ______Roop and nothing under the mother’s name. I would think even if Helen did not tell her children about the family tragedy, surely she would have talked about the Roop family enough for Mary to have known the name of the lady who was the adoptive mother. Helen was only 5 when her parents died. Note to Jim: Miles Bacon sent me some family information that includes the obit for Mary, your father’s first wife, and the obit for your mother. If you do not already have these, I will be glad to copy them and send them along. Now I can get to bed. I could not wait until tomorrow to share this good news. 3. Hi Rooters, Today I received a copy of the death certificate for Helen Irene Thompson. Helen was one of the six Bottorff children left an orphan when her parents died on January 20, 1925, in Jackson, Michigan. Helen and her siblings were taken to Hedrick, Iowa to be cared for by relatives until they were adopted by various families in the community. Helen was adopted by the John Roop family. Helen married Oscar Chiarini, and they moved to Portland, Oregon. They divorced some years later, and according to family notes they may have had four children. I have no information on the children. Helen later married a man by the name of Thompson, but when she died in 1994 she was divorced. The informant on her death certificate was Mary Turner, a daughter. Is there anyone out there who might know Mary Turner and how I might make contact with Mary? Many thanks for any information you may have. Patsy Williams from Texas

    3. Thanks to all who offered comments regarding the correct lineage of Andrew J. & Elizabeth Ann (Mills) Bottorff. Yes, those names were apparently taken from that 1850 Scott Co IN census. The 1860 Tipton Co IN census lists them correctly as do the later censuses of the Nebraska counties where they settled in 1865. A copy of a page from their family bible, in my possession, confirms this. I just wanted to clarify the names of their children since they were published incorrectly in The Batdorf Family History. A reader might not otherwise not know that the birthdates in 1850 are consistent for “Isabell” to be Armilda Ellen; for “William M” to be Milburn Marion; for “Daniel H” to be David Monroe. Good Morning Merri, I am also interested in information concerning the Bottorff families. My primary interest lies with John W. Bottorff who married Elizabeth Graves on March 29, 1837 in Clark County, Indiana. John and Elizabeth had one son, John Wesley Bottorff, before they divorced, or he died, or ???? On May 11, 1845 Elizabeth Bottorff married Jacob Deuser. In the 1850 Clark County census they are listed as family #846 with the Deuser name spelled Duser. Young John is in the household as a 13-yr-old, and there are 2 younger children, Mary and David M. I need to know if the older John died leaving Elizabeth a widow before she married Jacob Deuser. I also need documentation on John Bottorff's parents. Other researchers think the older John was the son of Martin Bottorff, but I am looking for proof. A family chart available from LDS gives this information, but, of course, that may be an error. If you have any information concerning this family, I will greatly appreciate hearing from you. Family sickness prevents me from researching as much as I would like to, but I do try to read most of the emails on this list. Everyone is very helpful. 2. Patsy Williams
    3. 1. [BOTTORFF] Clark Co IN House Photo
    2. Merri Vinton
    3. I have a photograph marked "Old Bottorff Place, Clark County, IN". I would like assistance in identifying the structure more specifically. The style makes me think it may have been built in the first part of the 19th century. It is a simple two-story ?stucco structure, with what I would call a "lean-to(s)" which flanks each side of the main house. There are two windows on the second floor only, and a portico covering the door on the 1st floor. Each of the lean-tos have openings which don't appear to be windows. The ground level portion of these lean-tos are "open-air"--similar to porches. There is a symbol above the door. It isn't a traditional Pennsylvania German hex sign in a circular or hexagonal shape of which I am familiar, but rather a simple horse or maybe a bird...It looks a bit like a weather- vane, but it appears to be etched in the surface of the house itself. Additionally, it appears there may be a portion of a low stone wall just off one corner of the house. If anyone would be interested in helping me identify this old homestead, please email me privately and I will send you a jpeg. Any clues appreciated. Thanks. Merri [email protected]
