    2. Hi Janet I have collected info about Collins for over 15 years but do not have documentation of parents. Census shows Collins in 1830&40 Clark Co In, 1850 Henry Co Ky, 1860 Jackson Co IN, 1870 Johnson Co MO. From sources and will of George that married Nancy Phillips...I don't see a son Collins. What about Andrew & Abigail Allen? I have very little on this family. Can anyone help with this query?? 2. Ray Bottorff Jr
    3. Hi Cindy (and anyone else here), Here is further on what I have found in the past year since my last update. I am convinced that George W in Owen Twp, Jackson County who married Sallie Bottorff (d/o of John Bottorff and Jane, listed in 1860-1800 censuses) is the same as the son of Nicholas Bottorff of Washington County, Indiana as listed in 1850 census. I know from his grave that George W (it was Washington btw, and not William) that he was born in 1834, which Nicholas census has him born 1836. And there are some family trees out there that claim Nicholas' George W married someone else and stayed in Washington County. This I am not sure of. I am certain, without direct proof yet, that they are the same G W's. Now I would not mind knowing who John Bottorff's parents are, he was born about 1801 in Kentucky, Might be Martin's? I dunno. There are, again, other family trees on ancestry that has the John born on 8 Aug 1802 married to others. Would be nice to know how close cousins George W and Sallie really were. my best -Ray P.S. If anyone is interested in my tree to add to their own, please contact me, I am happy to help. From: Ray Bottorff Jr <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [BOTTORFF] John Martin Bottorff's parents/grandparents Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2011 23:34:16 -0500 (EST) References: <[email protected]> In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> Thanks Cindy, I am convinced through strong circumstantial evidence that John Martin Bottorff, born in Jackson County, Indiana about 1873, parents were George W Bottorff and Sallie, as shown in the Owen Township, Indiana census records living there in 1880. I am also convinced that John Martin's wife Rebecca Fredona Clark' mother's last name was Motsinger and Rebecca was listed in the 1880 census as Cedona Clark, a granddaughter living with her grandfather and grandmother William and Amanda Motsinger (1876 birthdate is right). Someone was kind enough to point out that in the 1870 census, George W Bottorff and WIlliam Motsinger both lived about 5 doors down from each other in Jackson County. The families knew each other and would explain John and Rebecca's later, uh, hook-up. This info does gives me a clue where to look in the local birth, marriage, death, and land records to confirm this connection, but I am pretty convinced based on this indirect connection. George W and Sallie is listed as Bartoff and living next door to Martin Bartoff (near same age as George W) and next door to John and Jane Bartoff in the 1870 Census. George W, listed as Pottorff, living again next door to John and Jane Pottorff and Martin Pottorff a few doors away in the 1860 census. John and Jane are consistently listed as being born in Kentucky in 1800 and 1801 respectfully. However, I have doubts that Martin or George W are the children of John and Jane because John and Jane are listed as Bottorff in the 1850 census in the same county, however, neither Martin or George W are listed as children (though they would have been young teenagers both). Maybe John and Jean are aunts/uncles or extended cousins along with Martin. So I think I have moved the family tree one generation back for the Bottorff's. But now my question as to who the parents are move to George W and Sallie (aka Sarah). By the way, I am fairly convinced that the W in George's name is for William and not Washington. Well the help here and elsewhere is giving me clues where to go next and maybe I will find those links to the main Bottorff branch yet. I would encourage all those Bottorff's in Indiana to consider trying to find the answers to the holes in research for all the Bottorff's from Jackson and Lawrence counties. There seems to be a lot of Bottorffs (Battorff, Buttorff, Pottorff, Bartoff, et al) in those areas of the state listed in 1850-1930 census records simply not accounted for in the various Bottorff genealogical trees I have seen to date. I hope I am helping fill in some of that! :-) Thanks again Cindy and everyone else so far with their help! my best -Ray Bottorff Jr -----Original Message----- From: CindyHB <[email protected]> To: bottorff <[email protected]> Sent: Wed, Dec 22, 2010 8:42 pm Subject: Re: [BOTTORFF] John Martin Bottorff's parents/grandparents Ray I have Va Faust Batdorf's book. 1. Re: [BOTTORFF] John Martin Bottorff's parents/grandparents
    2. Ray Bottorff Jr
    3. Thanks Very Much Gail! I appreciate all help! Here is some further info I have put together int he past couple of weeks... I have become convinced John Martin's parents are George W and Sallie. A John M is shown to be living with them in the 1880 as George W and Sallie Buttorff (the birth year is off by a couple years though) in Owen Twp, Jackson County, Indiana. In that same census is a female names Cedona Clark living in Jackson county with her grandfather William Motsinger. George W and Sallie show up previously in the 1870 census as Bartoff (y'know I love my name but census takers apparently did not. John Martin is listed as Bottorff, Buttorff, and Battorff in later censuses too). It is them because the initials given to the children in the home match the names on the 1880 census. About 5 doors down in the 1870 census, is WIlliam Motsinger and his family. Also in 1870, George & Sallie live next door to a 70 year old John Bartoff and 69 year old Jean Bartoff (both born in Kentucky, 1800 and 1801 appx). Next to them is a Martin Bartoff and family. The age makes me think George is John and Jean's son along with Martin. In the 1860 census, George and Sallie is still listed next to John and Jean, but as Pottorff (sheesh!). Martin is living in the area still but not next door (one census page back, lol). But what throws doubt into the John and Jean as parents of George or Martin is the 1850 census. John and Jean, listed as Bottorff, show up in that census with all their kids, and no George nor Martin appear, though either would be of age to still be with their parents. it is probably they are family, but not children/parents. Doubly to my frustration is the lack of information online for my line of Bottorff's. There are plenty of research into the Bottorff's of Clark County, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. A huge hole for the number of Bottorff's in Jackson and Lawrence counties. its not helped I think by the lack in genealogical interest from my extended cousin families living there! Maybe this is the start of a change in fortunes? :-) my best -Ray -----Original Message----- From: GWATK98 <[email protected]> To: bottorff <[email protected]> Sent: Sun, Dec 19, 2010 1:10 pm Subject: Re: [BOTTORFF] John Martin Bottorff's parents/grandparents I may have a copy here and will check. 3. Hi Jay: I cannot recall where I got my copy of Virginia Batdorf's book, but it is published by the Mennonite Family Histroy of 18 West Main Street, Elverson, PA. 19520-1071, Copyright 1990. I am not so sure that it will do you that much good because I did a quick check and could not find anything. However, if you went through all the more recent familys you might stumble onto something. 1. [BOTTORFF] John Martin Bottorff's parents/grandparents
    2. Ray Bottorff Jr
    3. Hoping to pick up on posts my brother Jay posted in the late 1990s and 2000s... some more detail which I hope generates a response here: I am looking for my Great-Grandfather's parents and hopefully Grandparents. Once I get this I can tie the rest of the family into the existing Bottorff family tree. Here is the info. John Martin Bottorff Born Sept 1873 near Cliuspeing, Indiana, died sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s in Bedford, Indiana. Shows up in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census, last name appears to have been misspelled, Buttorff or Battorff on some of them. Maybe, maybe appears as John M Buttorff in the 1880 census (being born in 1871), with parents George and Sallie. (However Sallie shows later up with daughter Margaret (or Nettie in 1900 and 1910 census as a widow as Sarah Buttorff. Margaret, as Margaret Buttorff living with sister known then as Amanda E Norman in 1920 census. Margaret is in the Madison State Hospital institution as Bottorff in the 1930 census...therefore clouding what name John Martin was born under originally, if this is the same John Martin). John married Rebecca Fredona Clark, Feb 28, 1891 (named Rebcoa Fredona and Fredona R and Rebecca in 1900 - 1930 censuses). No able to locate her any earlier in the census, but family legend states she was Cherokee Indiana adopted into the Clark family. However all census records list her as white. John and Rebecca had the following children: Harry Oscar (23 Mar 1892 - 16 Sep 1903) Otis William (18 Dec 1896 - 1964), married Flora B about 1917 Ethel M (Oct 1899 - 20 Apr 1988), married and divorced a Mr. Lee between the 1920 and 1930 census, had children Mary Maxin Lee (b 1923) and Barbara Lee (b 1925) Cecil K (9 Jun 1902 - 13 Feb 1977) married Flossie Lee (1905-1990) and had at least two children, Robert E (1922-2004) and Mary Lou (1933-2004). Mary used to be active in genealogical circles up to her death and had contact with my brother who started this research in the 1990s. Opal V (about 1907 - ?) and my grandfather: Walter Edgar (19 Dec 1912 - 2 Dec 1949) married Inez Edith Luukkonen and fathered Clark Richard (1941 - ), Rodney Ralph (1942 - ), Ray Sheldon (my dad, 1945 - ), Arlen Otto (1946 - ), and Martin Lamont (1949 - ) I am hoping some has a link to John Martin in their own trees, maybe some of those who are distant cousins have better historical contact with John Martin and know more of his past. My grandfather dying so young cut my family off from that side of the family tree and therefore its history, except what my grandmother could remember. So if anyone has any info, please reply! Thanks! my best Ray Bottorff Jr
