It appears he was having an affair with Jane Depledge whilst still married to his first wife Eve Smith and continued to have children with Jane whilst still married. Eve died in 1893 and Joseph married Jane almost immediately after. In 1881 he has left his first wife, who has to look after their four children including a 2 year old son, and is living at 7 Ireland Street, Bingley where Jane and her sister are noted as boarders.
