All Bottoms everywhere This is my first draft of the chronology of the Bottoms family in Gibson County, Tennessee. All notifications of error are welcome, as well as any contributions that relate to this theme. I have tried to separate any personal comments from the facts. If I have failed, please let me know. Harvey Bottoms in Gibson County, Tennessee 1850-1880 Prepared by Harvey L. Bottoms Paschal moved to Gibson County some time between November 7, 1850 and March 7, 1853. Paschal sold his land in Wilson County on November 7, 1850 for $1,000 and A. Harris took the document in to the County Clerks office October 3, 1853 and subsequently recorded January 6, 1854. March 7, 1853 - Paschal purchased 200 acres in Gibson County from Margarett I. Brevan of Iredell County, North Carolina for $500.00 (P-450) September 28, 1853 - Paschal purchased 2 lots totaling 132 acres from W. J. Bichton for $2,000. (Speculation that this money may have came from the sale of his interest in the turnpike) (R-351) January 2, 1854 - Paschal sold the 200 acres, purchased March 7, 1853, to P. N. Orvall for $200. (V-353) December 21, 1854 - Granville married Esther O'Daniel. 1856 - Eliza Ann was born to Granville and Esther. July 26, 1857 - Presley married Arvie Zenia Keathley. 1858 - Nancy was born to Granville and Esther. May 19, 1858 - Martha Jane was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. October 8, 1859 - Paschal sold the 132 acres, purchased September 28, 1853, to Josiah N. Wyatt for $3,000. (V-262) June 19, 1860 - William Samson was born to Granville and Esther. December 23, 1860 - Sterling married Sara Adaline O'Daniel (sister to Esther). 1861 - William Monroe was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. February 15, 1861 - Granville purchased 161 acres from Martin L & Rachael Sloan for $3,056 (part of the estate of John O'Daniel). (W-587) May 28, 1861 - Devan and Paschal A. joined the CSA at Jackson, Tennessee for a period of 1 year. Co. F, 12th Regiment Tennessee Vols. by A. W. Campbell. Paschal A. was a cook by order of General Cheatham. Devan was a teamster. June 8, 1861 - Tennessee by a vote of 105,000 to 47,000 joined the new Confederacy. November 6, 1861 William Samson, son of Granville and Esther, dies. December 31, 1861 - Granville sold 70 acres to J. M. Wilkes in District No. 9, for $390. (Y-1) Granville sold 15 acres to E. Becten in District No. 9, for $270. (Y-2) January 2, 1862 - Granville sold 55 acres to Michael Flowers in District No. 9. for $833. (X-311) August 30, 1862 - Devan and Paschal A. were in the Battle of Richmond.. December 31, 1862 - Devan and Paschal A. were in the Battle of Murfreesboro (also known as Stones River) in Rutherford County. May 5, 1863 - Presley joined the 26th Tennessee Cavalry in Spring Creek, Tennessee where he signed for a 2 year stint. He was part of Capt. Geo. King's Scouts. August 1, 1863 - JK, with bay mule worth $400, and Granville, with a sorrel horse worth $1,200. escaped through the night to join Colonel Greer's Regiment who was active in Western Tennessee at that time. Captain Mathis signed them for a 3 year period and they left for Northern Mississippi. 1864 - Francis J. was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. Spring 1864 - JK participated in what the North called the "Fort Pillow Massacre". JK, as told by Presley, as others involved in this battle, faced jail time for his participation but escaped and joined his brothers, Devan and Paschal A. in Paducah, Kentucky to be paroled there in 1865. February 24, 1865 - Paschal A. married Mary Alphin. April 9, 1865 - Lee surrenders - End of Civil War May 5, 1865 - Paschal purchase Lot No. 24 in Rutherford Station in Civil District No. 9 on Front Street from Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company for $125. (Y-34) 1866 - Margaret A. was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. January 12, 1866 - Granville sold 101 acres in District No. 9 to Charles Carroll for $2,500. (Y-272) May 2, 1866 - Paschal H. sold Lot No. 24 for $500 to T. C. Corley. (Y-438) July 1, 1866 - Esther (Granville's wife) bought 125 acres in District No. 10 for $2,800. She had a note of $509.75 on this land to be paid from the money she was to inherit. This appears to be part of the estate of her father John O'Daniel. This was "free of control of her husband". (Y-391) 1867 - James was born to Sterling and Adaline. August 3, 1867 - Granville purchased 50 acres in District 19 for $700 from A. G. English. (Z-383) 1868 - Robert Edward was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. Gunther and Walter were born to Sterling and Adaline January 13, 1868 - Harriett married George Talmas Boyett January 16, 1868 - James K married Mahulda Jane Boyett, sister of George T. Boyett) March 28, 1868 - Devan married Margaret N. Bowes. 1869 - Margaret was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. February 12, 1869 - Esther has consummated the land purchase of July 1, 1866. (1-434) Granville and Esther sell 27 acres of the land for $550 to A. Glisson to pay Charles Carroll. (This shows Civil District 11). (I435_ June 26, 1869 - Sterling and Adaline sold 4 acres to J. R. Porter for $86.12 in District No. 10. (1-584/585) Sterling and Adaline sold 62 1/2 acres to J. G. Porter for $1,600 in District No. 10 for $1,600 ($700 Cash and $900 note to Paschal A. due December 25, 1869) (1-588/589) After 1870 - Margaret, daughter of James K and Mahulda Jane, died. March 10, 1870 - Sallie L. Nore was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. April 19, 1870 - Paschal H. sold 4 acres to William J. Bottoms in District No. 10 for $130. (2-237) May 8, 1871 - Robert Walter was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. November 1, 1871 Paschal A. married Amanda Eliza Goza. December 23, 1871 - Granville sold 98 acres to William R. Tyson for $1,600. (3-445) Please note that this deed is extremely difficult to read. Esther purchased 19 acres from William R. Tyson for $85 (3-446) Please note that this deed is extremely difficult to read. 1872 - Beulah Belle was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. January 21, 1872 - Sallie L. Nore, daughter of Presley and Arvie Zenia., died. June 18, 1872 - John W. was born to James K and Mahulda Jane. June 30, 1872 - Presley Edward was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. August 2, 1872 - Presley Edward, son of Presley and Arvie Zenia, died. August 18, 1872 - Granville and Esther sold 2,895 sq. ft. lot in District No. 10 to W. L. Jones for $20. This appears to be her part of the estate because she is taken aside privately again and explained the rules and gives her attest privately as Adaline was. (4-330/331) August 18, 1872 - Granville and Esther sold 2,875 sq. ft. lot in District No. 10 to G. J. Ramsey for $20. Again she is taken privately to attest. (4-331/332) September 12, 1872 - Corless I. was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. September 14, 1872 - Sterling and Adaline sold 100 acres in District No. 10 to Thomas P. McNeely and Presley L. Bottoms for $7,500. This must be Adaline's part of her father's estate because they took Adaline aside privately to attest that she was selling this land without pressure or undue exertion by her husband. (4-68/69) Please note this land borders W. J. Bottoms land. October 9, 1872 - Corless I., son of Paschal A. and Amanda died. November 30, 1872 - Sterling and Adaline purchased the 100 acres back from Thomas P. and Letha McNeely and Presley L. and Amy Bottoms for $7,500. W. J. Bottoms is again mentioned. Amy's signature line shows A. M. Bottoms. (This is a mystery to me.) (4-254) December 23, 1872 - Eliza Ann, daughter of Granville and Esther, marries J. Z. Davis. January 18, 1873 - Granville and Esther purchased 4 acres in District No. 10 near Kenton Station from W. R. Tyson for $125. Located at the SW corner of Kenton. (4-376) February 25, 1873 - Sterling and Adaline sold 50 acres in District No. 10 to J. E. Kyzer for $1,200. Once again, Adaline is taken privately to attest the sale. (4-342) March 12, 1873 - Granville and Esther sold 18 acres to Henry Flowers, Jr. for $2,100. (4-406/407) This again appears to be part of Esther's estate. Esther Bottoms purchased 75 acres in District No. 24 from Henry Flowers, Jr. & A. E. Flowers, his wife for $1,800. (4-407/408) July 29, 1873 - Emma Idella was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia in Trenton. September 19, 1873 - Presley purchase 66 3/4 acres in District No. 10 from J. W. Halford & E. M. Halford for $1,335 ($975.50 in cash and a note for $359.50). Devan witnessed the sale on behalf of the Halfords. (4-674) March 21, 1874 - Granville and Esther sold 43 acres in District No. 24 to Jethro Howell for $645. Since Esther has used her estate funds, she is once again taken privately to attest the sell. (5-354/355) September 30, 1874 - Granville and Esther sold the remaining 33 acres in District No. 24 to Jethro Howell for $852. Since Esther has used her estate funds, she is once again taken privately to attest the sell. (4-729/730) October 28, 1874 - Sallie was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. December 17, 1874 - Sterling and Adaline sold 42 1/2 acres in District No. 10 to G. W. Monroe for $1,000. Adaline is taken privately to attest. (6-132/133) July 30, 1875 - Mahulda Jane received 50 acres from her father Eli Boyett in Civil District No. 10 free from ownership of any of her husband(s) that she should ever have. She had no right to sell the land. (6-475/476) 1876 - Flora was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. October 17, 1878 - Earley Eli was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. September 5, 1879 - Paschal was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. (Please note Paschal A. remained in Gibson County) June 6, 1879 - Paschal Lester was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia in Pope County, Arkansas. Paschal H. was listed in Logan County, Arkansas in 1880.
