After Mary's death he married Mrs C A Pyland, who was the widow of a cousin, I am told. To all you Bottoms out there, I have the 1870 census for Bottoms in Gibson, Obion and Lauderdale Counties. I have not conclusively determined the ones with ** beside them. If you know of any information that might help me, please let me know. Jo Bottoms is James K. Polk Bottoms. Where they got Jo, I don't know. It looked like JD on the actual census. In his household were the following: J O Bottoms 23 M W Farmer 150 Acres TN Hulda 21 F W Housekeeper TN Margaret 1 F W TN G. M. McCollum 18 M B Laborer So, Margaret was still living on the 1870 census so she was a little older than an infant when she died; young nevertheless. Other 1870 Census information Gibson County S. S. Bottoms 33 M W Farmer $500 600 acres TN Adlon 24 F W Housekeeper TN James II or IV 3 M W TN Gunther ? 2 M W TN Walter 11/2 M W TN **A G or T Bottoms 40 M W Farmer 300 acres TN Nancy 35 F W Housekeeper TN William 14 M W TN Samuel 12 M W TN Mary 9 F W TN Rose Ann ? 6 F W TN This Bottoms appeared as a family listed as the next family below Sterling. So they were either living in the same household or their land were right next to each other. I've have to believe that this is the missing son of the 1840 census who somehow or another didn't get included on the 1850 census (marriage or visiting). D. H. Bottoms 39 M W Farmer 300 acres TN Margaret 24 F W Housekeeper TN In Obion County P. L. Bottoms 33 M W Confectioner $1000 700 acres TN Arvizenia 29 F W Housekeeper TN William 9 M W TN Francis J. 6 F W TN Margaret A. 5 F W TN Robert E. L. 2 M W TN Sallie E. 1/2 F W TN Born in February Lauderdale County **William Bottoms 23 M W Farmer 500 acres TN Francis 18 F W TN Mary Francis Peel and William Bottoms were married January 29, 1870. The other Bottoms in Lauderdale County Robert Bottoms born in GA and his wife born in AL Page 45 of the Red Book by Almira Bottoms Butler says that this William belongs to Robert. However, in 40's and 50's, she shows Robert being in Alabama and Mississippi. In fact at least until the 1860 census, she doesn't show Robert living in Tennessee. The first time is in the 1870 census. Since the census shows William to be born in Tennessee, I can't believe that he belongs to Robert and is probably our William. I think that she or whoever prepared the information just automatically assumed that he was Robert's William. The only thing she has for William is what I showed regarding his marriage without the dates. This appears to be Lester's line. I'll try to get from him any information that he might have. Harvey

My aunt had indicated that Samson Smith and William H. Smith who sold Paschal his land were related to us. This seems to match what you told me. Do you have record which Smith was Mary's. BTW these two Smith's are listed as early pioneers of Wilson County. Here is a compilation of the Rutherford/Wilson County Bottoms and my Bottoms as they moved to Gibson/Obion/Lauderdale? Counties that I did for my aunt. I send it to you to see if you can help me fill in the individuals that I don't know about. Does anyone claim the Bottoms, Robert and William, that I have in the 1870 census in Lauderdale? The William is the right age for Paschal H.'s William. If anyone has any comments, please let me know. I did not take time to analyze much of John R.'s family which I know several of you can fill in some of the blanks for him. 1. 1830 Rutherford Census a. John (50-60) and wife 40-50) and daughter (15-20) don't know who she is yet. This could be Sarah who married John N. Rains 3/16/1839 in Rutherford County. b. John R. (20-30) and wife (15-20) with John M. (under 5). c. Sterling H. (20-30) and Matilda (15-20). d. I think that Paschal could be in Martin Kea's household. He had the following in his household - male 1 40-50; 2 20-30; 1 15-20 and 1 under 5; females 1 40-50; 2 10-15 and 1 under 5. It is definitely Paschal's age and fairly close to Margaret's age (depending if 1813 is correct) No Kitty here, unless Martin was without wife, but she could have been in another household. 2. 1840 Wilson Census a. Paschal is listed twice. Once as Paschal H. and once as Paskel H.. Occupants are the same except for a female between the age of 15 and 20 is there in one of them. Please note this: had 2 sons 5-10 and 3 sons under 5. Note 1850 census!! b.
