Thanks-- Jewel Wellborn Dear Jewel, Thanks so much for your notice about the reunion. I won't be able to come but would like to ask you a couple of questions. Is this the Burrell and James Bottoms that lived at one time in Barbour Co. AL? There was a Burrell Bottoms whose brother (I'm pretty sure it was James but could have been Tomas) went to Texas. This James/Thomas left a legal document in Barbour CO. AL giving his "destitute borther, Burrell" and his family use of his property in his absence. I have the document and cannot seem to put my hands on it at the moment, thats why I'm vague on the brother's name. I have a bunch of other information on these Bottoms and am anxious to connect with someone researching them. I can't tell you the date of the document until I find it. My great great grandmother was Frances Bottoms Sims, married to M.R. (Malachi Reaves Sims in Pike Co.GA on Dec. 22, 1842. They migrated to Barbour county after my great grandfather, James M. Sims, was born in about 1845. Frances had a sister living with them, Mary A. Bottoms in the 1850 Barbour Co. AL census. She was a few years older than Frances. Frances' only living daughter was named Mary A. so I am assuming she was named after her aunt. They had a total of 5 children: James M., Mark W., Mary Ann Elizabeth, John M., and Sarah Frances who died at birth. It is interesting to note that your Burrel's wife was also a Sarah. So, many clues and nothing deffinate. After Frances died in child birth in 1853, M.R. moved to Newton in Dale Co. AL. This was also the home of a Dr. James Bottoms, a very early settler in the area. Archives lists his son, one being a Burrell Bottoms. Bottoms was not a common name and since M. R. and Frances lived near the Bottoms Brothers in Barbour Co. and M. R. moved to the very county of the brothers father, I am inclined to think that these Bottoms are related to Frances. Perhaps brothers and father or cousins and Uncle. Do you have any thoughts on this and do these Bottoms fit in any way in the Bottoms line you are representing? Would any of your Bottoms families had two sisters, Frances and Mary? I'm desperate. Hi all. Jim Lantrip list owner here. All rootsweb associated lists including this list will be upgraded beginning 12 midnight this coming Saturday and possibly lasting for 8 hours. This new system should run faster and better. I might also add that Rootsweb systems do not accept messages which are written using the HTML Format. To change the format in Internet Explorer click Format in the menu bar and select TEXT. The reason this is done is to conserve space on archived messages. An Html formatted message is about twice the size of a regular text message.
Just a note for all of you who might be interested. October 18th is the date of the Bottoms Family Reunion which is held annually on the closest Sunday to October 15th. As usual, we will hold it at Wintersmith Park in Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. All are welcome. While we are mostly descendants of James K. Polk Bottoms, we have other Bottoms families visit us from time to time. My aunt, Patsy Wallace Bottoms, actually ramrods this event, but I just wanted to be sure and get the message out to anyone who might be interested. Harvey

Dear Bottoms List, I am descended from the eldest child, James M., son of Malachi Reaves Sims and Frances Bottoms. James was my great grandfather and Malachi and Frances my great great grand parents. I am extremely anxious to corruspond with any of you to see if we might have "anything" to share. I have not found the parents or family of either Malachi or Frances. This is my lineage and what I have. Malachi Reaves Sims I b. 1823 in GA and died in 1869 and buried near Newton, AL. Malachi Reaves Sims II and Malachi Reaves Sims III as well as other family members are all buried in the same cemetary. Malachi married Frances (B?) Bottoms in Pike Co. GA on Dec 22 1842 (I have a copy of the marriage record). According to an 1850 Barbour AL census, she was born in SC, he in GA. She was born 1824 and died abt. 1852 in Barbour Co. AL within a year of the birth of her last child. He was a carpenter (census) and they lived in Midway, Barbour Co. at the time. It took me quite alot of time determining this as there are 7 Midways in AL. The area in which they lived is now on or near the border of Bullock Co. and Barbour Co. AL because the county lines changed. This has made it nearly impossible to locate any specific records there. I have yet to find Frances' grave site, which has been a major search for me. She is said to have been buried in or near Midway. Their children were: (1) James M. Sims, born July 2, 1844-5 in Pike Co. GA. He served in the Confederacy in the Civil War in the 15th AL Regiment. His Civil War Roll Cards and Hospital record give this specific info. James married on 1-23-18?? in Butler Co. AL, Frances Viola Vinson, b. 1844 in Butler Co. AL, d. 4-10- 1901 Both are buried in Oakwood Cemetary in Georgianna, AL, Butler Co. Their children were: (1) Laura Sims b. 1873 Butler Co. AL m. Pascal - daughters Marie and Louise (2) May Sims b. 1876 Butler Co. AL - never married (3) Charles Lee Sims b. Jan 15, 1878 Butler Co. AL, d.Aug 21 1931 - killed in the line of duty as Deputy Sherrif of Butler Co. Charles married Maude Carlene Sims (not related) on July 24, 1901 in Butler Springs AL. Charles' children were: (1) Frances Adelia Sims (2) Charles "Son" Sims (3) James R. Sims (4) Carlton Sims (5) Harold Hilson Sims (my father) m. Sybil Janice Bradberry (6) Hilda Coleen Sims (2) Mark W. Sims, b. 1846 d. in Selma, AL fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He did not have a chance to marry or have children. (3) Mary Ann Sims b. 1847-8 and married Thomas E. Atkinson. They had children. (4) John M. Sims b. Feb 1, 1850 in Midway, Barbour Co. AL m. Mary Adams, dau. of James Adams. Their children were: (1) Louis J. Sims (2) Exa Sims (3) John M. Sims (5) infant died young - Frances last child, a female. Malachi remarried Elizabeth Carter not long after Frances' death. I don't have too many details of Malachi Sr's marriage to Elizabeth Carter. She is buried in Newton Cem. with Malachi. Her dates 1833-1921. Apparently she remarried a West after his death, hence her nickname, "Ma West". In the 1850 Barbour Co. census there is living a woman named Mary A. Bottoms, aged 32. I believe she is Frances older sister and the namesake for her daughter Mary A. Sims. She is also listed as being born in SC. Also the justice of the peace that married them was a Hartsfield in Pike Co. GA. There are other Sims living in the immediate vicinity of Pike Co. GA that had business and land dealings with Hartsfields, including the donation of land for a church pastored by a Hartsfield. Interestingly, but maybe by sheer coincidence, these same Sims sold and bought land from an Atkinson (the same last name as the man, Malachi's grnaddaughter, Mary Ann married.) I have not been able to connect my Malachi Sims with any of these Sims, but the Sims Hartsfields and Bottoms seem to be closely associated in that area so I have a strong feeling that this is the SIms and Bottoms group they are connected to. There were also some Bottoms men living close to Malachi and Frances (in their age range) when they lived in Barbour Co. I have a copy of a power of attorney from James Bottoms (who was in Texas at the time), giving his "destitute" brother, Burrell Bottoms and his family use and rights to his land and property in his absence. When Malachi remarried after Frances death he migrated to Dale Co. near Newton where a Dr. James Bottoms, father of the very Bottoms brothers of Barbour Co. He was a very early settler in the area. I feel that these Bottoms brothers (Burrel and James), were somehow related to Frances and Mary (brothers or cousins?) and that when she died Malachi went to live near his inlaws. All of this is conjecture. If anyone has anything that mentions a Malachi Sims or M.R. Sims (his mifddle name was Reeves/Reaves) in relation to a Bottoms or has a combination of daughters Frances and Mary I would like to corruspond. This has been a 20 year search with no results as yet. Please reply! This is 1818. The first deed for old John that I have is about 1829. The page is missing in Rutherford County records so I think that this info is the same land that he sold in 1839. He owned about 150 acres. His neighbors were to the best of my knowledge, Erasmus Keys, widow Jordan (John R. married a Jordan)(David Jordan witnessed this sale), Benjamin Morgan , Smith Wilson and someone with last name of Robbs. This is a transcription of Email I received from a researcher named Geneowoman. Concerning Billy Bottoms Family Claim to Indian Heritage. Jim, This is so great. I hope there is enough information out there to see what the relationship is. Here is a statement I found about Mushulatubbee. Mushulatubbee was the son of Homastubbe. Homastubbe was the son of Mingo Pushcoos. Nathaniel Folsom's two wifes were the nieces of Pushcoos. It goes on to say that maybe Tehona, the wife of John Pitchlynn was also the niece of Pushcoos. Mushulatubbee died in 1836. Two of his sons Peter and James took on the name King. This is not the only story I've heard. There have been other connections written. I know I've read that Mushulatubbee was uncle to Peter Pitchlynn. (But that could be in a general Indian way) I think we have taken these old statements in too much of a white way when they might have been meant in a broader since. Thanks and until later, Sandra. -------------------------------------------------------- Many of the Children and descendants of William Bottom of Va, Tn, Tx. claim their mother (Ann Witt) was a daughter of Mushulatubbe. This has not been proven. Absolutely. Jim.

Barbara, I loved the letter & the 'family story'. If anyone in our Bottom(s) family have more family stories they would share, I would really like to hear them. According to mother before she passed away, my Grandfather Thomas L. Ivey was a quiet man. He passed away in 1938, the year before I was born, so I missed out on all the family stories. Grandfather Ivey was the son of Marcus L. Ivey and Usley Hill, dau of Benjamin Hill & Piety Bottoms, dau of William Bottom(s) & Ann Witt. Thank you so much, Alta email: aschmer@lakemac.net
Here is a letter dated August 22, 1877 from Zach Bottom to Pitchlynn "Cor Peachlan sir I drop you a few lines to see if you know any thing about my Mother and Father I was a son of William Bottoms my Mother was a daughter of Mashulataba my Mother had a brother named Elacha he was bit by a snake and died in the old nation (Mississippi) and she had a brother name Yacannanataba her name was Ann I come to the Choctaw nation with David Folsom and stayed with him until the year 1837 and we had bought some guns from the Choctaws and hired me to go with him to the Cherokee nation to sell them and I stayed ther and married a Cherokee woman and stayed there until the summer two of my sons was killed there they got in a __- about the war my sons was __ and they war or was finde and I was threatened that they would killme and I left and came to red river near ___ the Chickasas said that I would have to pay twenty five dollars to live there I though that I would go and see some of my old friends so went down to Doaksville and all my old friends was dead but Brazziel Flores he told see Jerry Waid and he could tell me about my rights in the Choctaw Brassiel said to write to you all so Jerry Waid said that he knowed my mother and her brother he knew when Elacha was snake bit he sayd that Mashulataba was their father but their mother was a half Choctaw I have seen you a great many times when I lived at David Folsom I knew Folsom when he was Chief of the Choctaw and I knew all the old people about Doaksville I was a 11 yer old when I came from the old nation you plese look over my scribbling and if you can aid me in my getting in my rights in the nation plese write to me as soon as you get this please write direct your letter to Dexter cook County Texas Zach Bottoms I do not want to live in Texas if I can help and I will not live with the Cherokee any more So remain your Friend until death. Zach Bottoms" I have corresponded with Bobby R Curry LYRY80A@prodigy.com who said"...... He (Billy Bottoms) did goto Texas because he and Thomas Jefferson Pitchlynn, Peter P Pitchlynn's brother, killed a Doctor named Mr Ward in Indian Territory. I have some of the court records where the Bottoms family tried to get on the rolls. The complete record is at the Oklahoma Genealogy Society in Oklahoma City. The court records make it plain that Billy Bottoms was recognized as an Indian, he looked Indian and spoke Choctaw. He wa from one of the Choctaw Clans. .....The court case is quie long and would require a lot of money to copy the whole thing in Oklahoma city. The copies cost $ .50 a page. ... They were not enrolled because he went to Texas. If you left the Territories the Dawes Commission would not enroll your family, unless you had political pull. The same thing happened to Peter Pitchlynn's family, but they had political pull from the Tribe, and his descendants got on the rolls". NOTE: Bobby R Curry is a descendant of Pitchlynn family. Now to old family stories: My husband, Jerry, remembers his grandparents telling him that Billy Bottoms shot the Sheriff of Cooke County and fled over into Indian Territory. Also he remembers stories that he cut of the nose of some doctor because the doctor treated a member of his family and that family member died. [Don't we all wish we had asked more questions when our grandparents were living!]
Hello All, I would like to hear from anyone researching Mary Briggs Bottoms b. ca 1778 married to Thomas Smith b. 1772. They were married on June 12, 1797 in Jefferson Co., TN. Any researchers out there? Thanks, Julie Walters
Hi Went through my Rutherford County deeds Saturday night. I am enclosing my findings and I think that I have found the connections that we have been looking for. As always, I would like stronger evidence but I feel like that along with all the other information that we know about Bradley Creek, etc. along with this information almost substantiates our theory.. John sold land 3/10/1839 - it was witnessed by David Jordan who definitely related to John R. Bottoms. Kitty sold her land in Rutherford County, 6/3/1834, Paschal bought his land 3/10/1835. Could Kitty have given him the money to buy his property? This land was bought by her in 1820. She should be showing up in the censuses for 1830 at least. John bought land 6/24/1830 adjoining Erasmus Keas' property. John bought land 12/24/1840 from Samuel Lasiter who apparently owed him $500. The debt would be forgiven if Lasiter would give him title. Witnessed by a Thomas D. Bottoms (don't know him?) John bought land from G. S. Newsom 7/27/1845 witnessed by James Jordan. John bought land 7/19/1841 from Samuel Lasiter. Witnessed by P. H. Bottoms (Paschal H. Bottoms) who as I indicated above was living in Wilson County. Could Lasiter be related. John sold land 12/18/1849 to move in with Sterling H. His name is listed as John Bottoms, Sr. (Could his middle initial be R. too.) Harvey
