    3. Great Job: Bill I checked it out again this morning and Looks great. I have Some data to send in several Categories. In my Family Origins program I have the option of creating reports and Family Group sheets Books etc and saving them to Disk. I further have the option of Loading them into my Word processor and then saving as Text. Of course it does not look as good as The original but it sure uses a lot less disk space. I also found a tip about columns etc. If you have a text document that contains columns and you display the doc on the web the columns don't line up. Here is the solution. Include the document in <pre> Document </pre> and the column will line up. What this does is keep the multi spaces instead of closing them up. I am thinking of making a list of Tips and instructions on how to use your Genealogical Program to produce and submit information to others. I have been helping Debbie some in this and I find a lot of problems with FTM 3.0 I hope the later version is better. Also If you would include the Following: To join the BOTTOM-L mailing list send Email to BOTTOM-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com and place only the word subscribe in the body of the Email. 1. [BOTTOM-L] Bottoms Family in Gibson County Tennessee
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. All Bottoms everywhere This is my first draft of the chronology of the Bottoms family in Gibson County, Tennessee. All notifications of error are welcome, as well as any contributions that relate to this theme. I have tried to separate any personal comments from the facts. If I have failed, please let me know. Harvey Bottoms in Gibson County, Tennessee 1850-1880 Prepared by Harvey L. Bottoms Paschal moved to Gibson County some time between November 7, 1850 and March 7, 1853. Paschal sold his land in Wilson County on November 7, 1850 for $1,000 and A. Harris took the document in to the County Clerks office October 3, 1853 and subsequently recorded January 6, 1854. March 7, 1853 - Paschal purchased 200 acres in Gibson County from Margarett I. Brevan of Iredell County, North Carolina for $500.00 (P-450) September 28, 1853 - Paschal purchased 2 lots totaling 132 acres from W. J. Bichton for $2,000. (Speculation that this money may have came from the sale of his interest in the turnpike) (R-351) January 2, 1854 - Paschal sold the 200 acres, purchased March 7, 1853, to P. N. Orvall for $200. (V-353) December 21, 1854 - Granville married Esther O'Daniel. 1856 - Eliza Ann was born to Granville and Esther. October 8, 1859 - Paschal sold the 132 acres, purchased September 28, 1853, to Josiah N. Wyatt for $3,000. (V-262) June 19, 1860 - William Samson was born to Granville and Esther. December 23, 1860 - Sterling married Sara Adaline O'Daniel (sister to Esther). 1861 - William Monroe was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. May 5, 1863 - Presley joined the 26th Tennessee Cavalry in Spring Creek, Tennessee where he signed for a 2 year stint. He was part of Capt. Geo. King's Scouts. August 1, 1863 - JK, with bay mule worth $400, and Granville, with a sorrel horse worth $1,200. escaped through the night to join Colonel Greer's Regiment who was active in Western Tennessee at that time. Captain Mathis signed them for a 3 year period and they left for Northern Mississippi. 1864 - Francis J. was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. Spring 1864 - JK participated in what the North called the "Fort Pillow Massacre". She had a note of $509.75 on this land to be paid from the money she was to inherit. This appears to be part of the estate of her father John O'Daniel. This was "free of control of her husband". (Y-391) 1867 - James was born to Sterling and Adaline. August 3, 1867 - Granville purchased 50 acres in District 19 for $700 from A. G. English. (Z-383) 1868 - Robert Edward was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. Gunther and Walter were born to Sterling and Adaline January 13, 1868 - Harriett married George Talmas Boyett January 16, 1868 - James K married Mahulda Jane Boyett, sister of George T. Boyett) March 28, 1868 - Devan married Margaret N. Bowes. 1869 - Margaret was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. February 12, 1869 - Esther has consummated the land purchase of July 1, 1866. (1-434) Granville and Esther sell 27 acres of the land for $550 to A. Glisson to pay Charles Carroll. (This shows Civil District 11). (I435_ June 26, 1869 - Sterling and Adaline sold 4 acres to J. R. Porter for $86.12 in District No. 10. (1-584/585) Sterling and Adaline sold 62 1/2 acres to J. G. Porter for $1,600 in District No. 10 for $1,600 ($700 Cash and $900 note to Paschal A. due December 25, 1869) (1-588/589) After 1870 - Margaret, daughter of James K and Mahulda Jane, died. March 10, 1870 - Sallie L. Nore was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. April 19, 1870 - Paschal H. sold 4 acres to William J. Bottoms in District No. 10 for $130. (2-237) May 8, 1871 - Robert Walter was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. November 1, 1871 Paschal A. married Amanda Eliza Goza. December 23, 1871 - Granville sold 98 acres to William R. Tyson for $1,600. (3-445) Please note that this deed is extremely difficult to read. Esther purchased 19 acres from William R. Tyson for $85 (3-446) Please note that this deed is extremely difficult to read. 1872 - Beulah Belle was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. January 21, 1872 - Sallie L. Nore, daughter of Presley and Arvie Zenia., died. June 18, 1872 - John W. was born to James K and Mahulda Jane. June 30, 1872 - Presley Edward was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. This appears to be her part of the estate because she is taken aside privately again and explained the rules and gives her attest privately as Adaline was. (4-330/331) August 18, 1872 - Granville and Esther sold 2,875 sq. ft. lot in District No. 10 to G. J. Ramsey for $20. Again she is taken privately to attest. (4-331/332) September 12, 1872 - Corless I. was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. September 14, 1872 - Sterling and Adaline sold 100 acres in District No. 10 to Thomas P. McNeely and Presley L. Bottoms for $7,500. This must be Adaline's part of her father's estate because they took Adaline aside privately to attest that she was selling this land without pressure or undue exertion by her husband. (4-68/69) Please note this land borders W. J. Bottoms land. October 9, 1872 - Corless I., son of Paschal A. and Amanda died. November 30, 1872 - Sterling and Adaline purchased the 100 acres back from Thomas P. and Letha McNeely and Presley L. and Amy Bottoms for $7,500. W. J. Bottoms is again mentioned. Amy's signature line shows A. M. Bottoms. (This is a mystery to me.) (4-254) December 23, 1872 - Eliza Ann, daughter of Granville and Esther, marries J. Z. Davis. January 18, 1873 - Granville and Esther purchased 4 acres in District No. 10 near Kenton Station from W. R. Tyson for $125. Located at the SW corner of Kenton. (4-376) February 25, 1873 - Sterling and Adaline sold 50 acres in District No. 10 to J. E. Kyzer for $1,200. Once again, Adaline is taken privately to attest the sale. (4-342) March 12, 1873 - Granville and Esther sold 18 acres to Henry Flowers, Jr. for $2,100. (4-406/407) This again appears to be part of Esther's estate. Esther Bottoms purchased 75 acres in District No. 24 from Henry Flowers, Jr. & A. E. Flowers, his wife for $1,800. (4-407/408) July 29, 1873 - Emma Idella was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia in Trenton. September 19, 1873 - Presley purchase 66 3/4 acres in District No. 10 from J. W. Halford & E. M. Halford for $1,335 ($975.50 in cash and a note for $359.50). Devan witnessed the sale on behalf of the Halfords. (4-674) March 21, 1874 - Granville and Esther sold 43 acres in District No. 24 to Jethro Howell for $645. Since Esther has used her estate funds, she is once again taken privately to attest the sell. (5-354/355) September 30, 1874 - Granville and Esther sold the remaining 33 acres in District No. 24 to Jethro Howell for $852. Since Esther has used her estate funds, she is once again taken privately to attest the sell. (4-729/730) October 28, 1874 - Sallie was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. December 17, 1874 - Sterling and Adaline sold 42 1/2 acres in District No. 10 to G. W. Monroe for $1,000. Adaline is taken privately to attest. (6-132/133) July 30, 1875 - Mahulda Jane received 50 acres from her father Eli Boyett in Civil District No. 10 free from ownership of any of her husband(s) that she should ever have. She had no right to sell the land. (6-475/476) 1876 - Flora was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia. October 17, 1878 - Earley Eli was born to James K and Mahulda Jane in Rutherford Station. September 5, 1879 - Paschal was born to Paschal A. and Amanda. (Please note Paschal A. remained in Gibson County) June 6, 1879 - Paschal Lester was born to Presley and Arvie Zenia in Pope County, Arkansas. Paschal H. was listed in Logan County, Arkansas in 1880. Please note that I thought that I had a few more deeds but may not have copied them. I will attempt to get copies of them sometime in the future. (Indicates Deed Location)

    1. [BOTTOM-L] BOTTOM(S) ARCHIVE SITE
    2. William T Bottoms
    3. This is an update on the Bottom(s) site. 1. After much consideration, the official name for the site is: BOTTOM(S) GENEALOGICAL ARCHIVES (BGA) This best describes the purpose of the site. ( A network is more of a site that has a main purpose of links sites together, that not being the case here. There will be links, but the main purpose will be the storage of material for viewing. 2.The URL will be: http://www.bottoms.org This will not be activated for a few days while the servers are programmed with the name. There will be 3 email addresses for the site: webmaster@bottoms.org help@bottoms.org comments@bottoms.org Again, these will not be activated for a few days yet. 3. For those that want a sneak preview of the site, type in the following IP address: http://209.207.183.63/ This by-passes the URL and goes directly to the site at hostserver. Please note that the format and layout may change a few times until the best is finalized. 4. Costs I located a host with 50MB for $17.95 a month , with a few additional features. ( I looked at some of the free 20MB sites..Fortune City etc, the problem is that they don't want to be used as a storage site. And, if a page is not frequently used, it is DELETED. You go to a page one day and it is gone) So all in all, I got the most for the money. With 50 MB we can store a lot of pictures. 5. Financial donations. If you feel inclined, send donations to me at: Bill Bottoms PO Box 347 Royal Oak, MD 21662-0347 6. Data Contributions: Send as email attachment to me , or can send floppy to me at same address as above. BTW, I do have a sheet size flat bed scanner, and will scan if required. Contact me if you have questions. All comments welcomed. Best Regards Bill Bottoms bbottoms@shore.intercom.net

    1. [BOTTOM-L] Bottom(s) Family History Site ?
    2. William T Bottoms
    3. The BOTTOM(S) family information www site effort will move ahead. The idea for this site came from Jim Lantrip, the owner of BOTTOM-L list on rootsweb, after he and I were exchanging views on home pages. Jim has wanted to have such a site for some time. In fact the web site at: ( http://www.wtgsoc.org/bottoms/ ) that he maintains on BOTTOMS downloads is sort of a history site. Jim, like I, would like to have a place where the knowledge that we all gather can be shared and used by all that have an interest in Bottom(s) and allied family history. I have only been researching for about 3 years since I retired; Jim for several more years. I think many of us reach a point in life when we think...what is going to happen to this work that we have done? Many of our families have little or not interest; we are not going to write a book; so why not share it so maybe someone will continue to benefit from our efforts. I will be the "webmaster" for the site and as such will be doing all the day-to-day operations. . All correspondence should be directed to me, and of course you may copy Jim on any and all. Jim will serve as "Advisor and Consultant" for the site. This will enable Jim to give all of us the benefit of his knowledge and experience on genealogy in general and the Bottom(s) history in particular. My initial thoughts on the site. I will pose in the form of FAQ's (frequently asked questions): 1. What is the name of the site? Ans. THE BOTTOM(S) FAMILY HISTORY NETWORK (BFHN) (Any suggestions for the name are welcomed) 2. What is the mission of the site? Ans. The mission of the BFHN is to provide a common "virtual file cabinet" for the record keeping of documents and images related to research on the Bottom(s) family genealogy so they may be shared and used by all. BFHN is not intended to replace nor compete with other historical or genealogical organizations, rather it is in addition or a supplement to them. 3. Who may contribute to the site? Ans. Anyone with data relevant to Bottom(s) and allied families may have data posted. I think it goes without saying that all posts must be in "good taste". 4.Who "owns" the data listed on the site? Ans. The original contributor maintains ownership of their particular items. Their contributions may be withdrawn if desired. 5. What about commercial use? Ans. No data posted on the site may be used by anyone, except the actual owner, for commercial purposes. 6. What about the accuracy of the information? Ans. BFHN cannot be held liable for inaccurate or adulterated information. Ultimately, the data posted here, like most internet data is at best secondary data and as such should be thoroughly verified by the user. ( I think that none of us would purposely post incorrect data. However in this day as in the past errors creep in and are replicated as times goes on. This is not a new problem but may be more problematic today because of the speed of data dissemination) 7. How may I use the site? Ans. You may use the site in two ways: (1) As a visitor you will , hopefully, gain new data about some Bottom(s) or allied family member. (2) You may use the site as a contributor. 8. What is a contributor? Ans. A contributor is one that offers some or all of their research information to be posted on the site. 9. Give some examples of how a contributor may use the site. a. If you have a home page already, a link can be added that should result in more traffic to your site. b. If you don't have a home page, for what ever reason, and would like to have your tree on the web, it can be incorporated into BFHN. All you need to do is get a gedcom file to the webmaster. (In the case of FTM files, those can be converted to gedcom by the webmaster). The webmaster will convert the gedcom files to HTML for posting on the site. On BFNL there would be a button with YOUR NAME, and this would take the viewer to your tree. c. Post independent topics such as your brick wall, copies of documents (wills, land records, war records) or images that are of general interest. Please note that images(photographs) consume considerable memory, so the idea is to have as many as possible listed, but only have a few that are active at any one time, much as Jim now does on the Bottoms Download...with rotation one a week or so. By having all photographs listed, a particular photo, even though not active at the time, could be emailed to a requestor. 10. What program will be used to convert to HTML? Ans. At the present time the plan is use GED2WWW. This is a dos based program that is very memory efficient. 11. I am concerned about posting my tree because it has sensitive information such as birthdates, etc? Ans. There are several programs which "clean" files of this type information. The GED2WWW has this feature and it will be used on all files (unless otherwise directed). Two other programs are GEDPRIVY and GEDCLEAN. So "that" concern will be addressed. 12. Will the data only have Bottom(s) surnames? Ans. No, there will be all the allied names...spouses and children. Just as in your genealogy files now, the conversion to gedcom maintains all ancestors. 13. I want to contribute but not sure exactly how to do it? Ans. Just send an email with your question to the webmaster. No question is stupid and we all have to start somewhere at sometime. 14. How will we know who contributed what? Ans. Each post will have the contributors name and email address, unless you desire to remain anonymous. In those cases it will state"contact webmaster" and if there is an inquiry you will be contacted by the webmaster letting you know that a certain person would like to contact you. Then you can decide if you want to correspond with that inquirer. 15. Will there be a list for outlet of information? Ans. Initially at least, the BOTTOM-L list will be used to make posts about what is going on with the site. If is becomes a need at some time later, we can set up a list of contributors or whatever. 16. How much will this project cost? Ans. Use for viewing and downloading will be free. The few dollars a month to pay for web space will be borne by small donations for those that desire to do so..some have already offered. There are no dues, etc. The success of this project directly depends on the willingness of each person to contribute and share their hard earned data. We are all motivated differently and we each have our own conscious to guide us. If there turns out to be only a few people contributing, the demands will be too great and they will become discouraged. I guess what could be asked is that we all participate according to our time and talents. I encourage all to reply with your comments, corrections, interest level, suggestions and questions. In fact I would really appreciate it if all on the BOTTOM-L list would reply stating interest level(a) high, (b) modest (c) none. Dear Bill, Your Bottoms Web site sounds like a great idea. I already have a Sims Site that I am putting together with many of the things that you are proposing for the Botttoms Site. The only thing mine does not include are GEDCOMS. I defer those to Lisa Simms who has a SIMS GEDCOM Progect on her site. Both of our sites are worth looking at, mine for graphics, Lisa's for database, if you want some ideas. I would very much like a link from the Bottom Site to mine when it is ready to link. Lisa has handles her GEDCOMS as separate submissions but has a huge search database that searches her site for specific names, dates etc. She is very friendly and always happy to offer help. Hope these will offer you ideas. Sincerely, Cynthia SIMS Kirkland (gggrand daughter of Frances ("Fannie") Bottoms Sims and Malachi Reaves Sims of Pike Co. GA and Barbour and Dales Cos. AL. 1. [BOTTOM-L] Ellis Island Wall of Honor-JAMES BOTTOMS
    2. William T Bottoms
    3. I am not sure how many are aware of a "virtual wall of honor", honoring those that came throught Ellis Island. (BTW, I am not associated with nor do I know anyone there) http://www.ellisisland.org Anyway, there is a JAMES BOTTOMS listed on panel # 50, and that he came from Durham, England. Since I am always interested in locating any specific Bottom(s) that actually immigrated, I tried to found out who put the name there, so I could get more data on this JAMES...when did he come over, which ship etc. After much prodding they told me that a Rev. James E. Evans of Greensburg, KY added the name. Do anyone know Rev Evans? Best Regards Bill Bottoms bbottoms@shore.intercom.net

    2. Jim Lantrip
    3. Dear Bottom hunters: This is Jim Lantrip your list owner. I wish to discuss some items concerning the Bottoms research. William (Bill) Bottoms and I have been discussing creating a Bottoms homesite on the WWW. Our intent is to help in making information available at no cost to the list subscribers and interested persons. We need to know if you are interested also. We plan to have a download page similar to what we now have on the WTGSOC link. In addition If any of you have your on personal homepage and would like us to link to it there will be a link page. Also there will be a graphics page to display photographs, and Images. There will be a genealogy page displaying gedcoms submitted to the List. I assume it will be several different files rather then one BIG file. This is currently in the planning stages and your input is needed. Please send us your comments privately rather than putting them on the list. Bills address is bbottoms@shore.intercom.net and mine is jlantrip@swconnect.com. Just in case some of you are interested in Genealigical Software this appears to be a pretty good deal. I picked this off the Waller-L one of the lists I subscribe to. **************************************************************************** ******************************************** The below comments are those of Sandra Duncan Waller-L list owner. NOTE: I just received a message on one of my lists that seems worth of passing on: I have not checked the validity of this message myself, but I do plan to call the 800 number tomorrow. Free Genealogy Software I had a pleasant surprise at a local store several days ago. The CompUSA store near my home is giving away free copies of one of the most powerful genealogy programs available today (according to Compuserve's Genealogy Guru Dick Eastman). The word "free" is perhaps a bit questionable; but nonetheless, the final cost to consumers is zero. ALL CompUSA stores are selling The Ultimate Family Tree for Windows for $59.99. The same store also offers an "in store instant rebate" for $14.99 which has to be asked for sometimes (if they ring it up for the $59.99 regular price- have them check with their national headquarters at 1-800-278-4685 and verify that the skew # - 188406 - for the Ultimate Family Tree gives an instant rebate with ALL CompUSA stores thru Oct. 6, 1998). Therefore the purchaser must pay $45.00 to the cashier instead of $59.99. The store also has rebate forms printed by Palladium Interactive, producers of the Ultimate Family Tree. The buyer can fill out the form and mail it, all along with the cash register receipt and the UPC symbol from the box, to an address in Arizona. A few weeks later a check arrives in the mail for $45.00. That amount is the same amount handed to the cashier. Therefore, the final cost is zero (except for sales tax in your State for $45). Comment from Compuserve's Dick Eastman their Genealogy Guru: I have never been able to define which program is the "best" genealogy program for use by everyone. Different people have varying skill levels and interests, and I don't believe there is any one genealogy program that is perfect for everyone. However, if I were to create a list of today's top three or four genealogy programs, the Ultimate Family Tree by Palladium Interactive certainly would be on that list. It is one of the most powerful genealogy programs available today. For more information on the Ultimate Family Tree Program, look at: http://www.ultimatefamilytree.com/. **********************************************************************
