    3. Response to Harvey Bottoms Email I have no problems with persons setting up their on genealogical web sites on whichever IP they choose. I have no problem with posting the link on this List. However Rootsweb and GenWeb are dedicated to making available information submitted to them without fees or other restrictions, in other words its free for all to see. They have a tremendous overhead and Rootsweb is providing all the resources and GenWeb relies on Volunteers like me to provide the gateways for depositing the information. Rootsweb does take contributions I give them $25.00 a year to help with their expenses. They also take Advertising income for adds displayed on their web pages. They archive millions of messages, database entries etc each day. Worldwide. There are other sites that charge a per month charge, I have no problem with that except where they might copy the information they got for free and then charge for it. The reason for formatting the Rootsweb List Email is to allow a person to correspond directly with the submitter and keep the List available for Genealogical material. I correspond with certain people who have an interest in the descendants of a William "Billy" Bottoms born in VA and died in Texas Came through Tennessee and married Ann Witt there. I feel like most persons would not be interested about speculations and descendants who carry other than Bottoms surnames. I do maintain a Bottoms Data Base which I share free to persons who want a copy. Jim Lantrip.. ----- Original Message ----- From: Harvey L. I am not aware of why he used the list to do it. However, you will probably read my post which is not directly a reply to him but to the list. I send out notification to my group when I have posted new information on the site and when we have had a new discovery. I have treated it as the family it is. However, by doing so, Tom is saying that the list might want to know some of our findings as well as helping those who are looking for our family to find us. Please let me know if you have any problems with this. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] My line
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. Fellow Bottoms researchers, For those who are not aware of my line, the farthest back that we have gone is Brunswick County, Virginia with John Bottom who appears to be originally a Longbottom based on records available there. In the 1820s, he moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee. From there, his son, Paschal H. moved to Gibson County and part of another son's. John R., moved to Arkansas. Later my great grandfather and Paschal H. moved to Arkansas as well. Paschal H. died there. My grandfather then moved to Indian Territory and ended up in Ada, Oklahoma where I was born. Hopefully this will help explain some of my prior and future posts. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] Edmond Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. Just to let everyone know that I have uploaded three additional documents regarding Edmond. They all involve the trial that occurred regarding the Alathea. I don't get the feeling that Edmond is charged with any crime but the owner was charged to the best of my knowledge with loss of cargo most likely tobacco. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] Bolling Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I think that I have found the record where Bolling Longbottom was in the War of 1812 but have not found our John. He is listed as Bolling L. Bottom (sound familiar). Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] Henry Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I have where there is a Henry Longbottom who was mustered to sea for June-July 1729. The purpose of this muster, I don't know and there is no record as to where Henry was from.. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] Edmund Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. Just a curious note that Edmund Longbottom was master of the ship Leviathan who came up the James River. While not specifically identified, this is where Surry County is located. The date of this is 1710 and could potentially be where our Longbottoms were introduced into Virginia. As mentioned there is nothing absolute here but just the possibility. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] William Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I found (although I don't have the documents themselves) that a William Longbottom had his Will and Estate inventory in Surry County in 1733. His will administration is in the 1735 records. I am also showing probably the William, that I previously wrote about, who was born in 1733 died in 1800 in Sussex County. I don't know if the Clayton has these on film or not but I will try to check them out the next time I am down there. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] William Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I ran across this in the LDS site. William Longbottom born 1733 Christened 18 Jul 1733 (Possibly makes him too young for the 1748 deed) in Surry County, Virginia. Married Jane Pennington probably Sussex County, Virginia. Children were William who was born prior to 1759, James who was born prior to 1763, Unknown who was born prior to 1865 and Samuel who was born before 1761. This leads us to possibly look for an elder William who purchased the land from the crown. This William would have been sixty-seven years old in 1800 which is very feasible. The younger William would have been forty-one so he would be a possibility as well. Harvey

    1. [BOTTOM-L] William Longbottom
    2. Harvey L. Bottoms
    3. I just ran across that William Longbottom of Sussex County (I think that he is the one that I have the 1748 deed) had a Revolutionary War Public Service Claim (Court Booklet 1 Page 10)(Commissioner's Book V Page 203). This potentially might make him eligible to be the William Bottom in the 1800 marriage of Sally L. Bottoms where he was her surety. Harvey

    3. Harvey, I, for one, would be delighted if you post your information. I have never visited your MyFamily page (didn't even know about it) so I would be very glad for whatever you can put on the list. Doris Tartt in Mississippi "Harvey L. 3. Most of you are aware that I maintain a Bottoms Family Genealogy at MyFamily.com for my family. In fact, some of you have visited it. It is a passworded secure location. We have over forty cousins and friends who have visited the site at least once and most of these are my cousins who visit fairly routinely. Unless someone objects, I will be including the list on various things regarding my work with my family as I find them. This will hopefully do two things. One is to let new members of our family to be aware of our existence through the list and secondly is to let you be aware of some of my findings. I do take some liberties with my list such as attempting to have a Sunday Devotional that will be included. However, you will find that most of what is being stated is genealogically related at least to my family. Please let me know if any of you have a problem with this. The Bottom-L list is normally very slow and hopefully this will cause people to remember to post to it. Harvey

    3. For Thomas and others. I tried in the original instructions to make you aware that all information that is sent to the list is archived and is available to all persons who wish to review it. There is a roots web search engine that will search the mailing lists and if you use a search word broad enough you will be able to read every message posted on the List. Each years messages are archived into one large list. So what ever is submitted is archived both query and answer or data. Suppose you want to look at all the messages then search for Bottom, if you want to look only the ones for Bottoms then use Bottoms as a search word If you are looking for John Bottoms then use John and Bottoms (be sure and include the and) This is your key to all that happened prior to joining the list. the URL is http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl another powerful search URL is the Surname search for queries posted all over the GenWeb system most of these are also archived by Rootsweb and that search URL is http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi?search This is a global search. I suggest that you bookmark these lists they have helped me a lot. If any others wish to post a URL that does not charge a fee or is a general information genealogical search engine please feel free to do so.
