Here is just one more link on the virus (last one I promise) http://live.altavista.com/scripts/editorial.dll?efi=900&ern=y&ei=1764726 Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
To All Listmembers: While I don't normally make a habit to announce or pass along virus info, this one does seem to be quite scary and real. The US defense system along with other businesses are considering shutting down email servers to avoid spreading it. I am passing along the following link to a page with the information from Alta Vista news reports on it. If you choose not to read it, this is fine but I am making sure everyone is aware of it. http://live.altavista.com/scripts/editorial.dll?efi=932&ern=y&ei=1762998 Being on the mailing lists it only takes one person to infect everyone.Sort of like a classroom with the chicken pox!! Also, it is only fair to warn everyone that if a message comes through to me and there is a virus attached, that person will be unsubscribed (in the interest of everyone else) and be notified by me. Something came through another listowner a short time ago saying that in order to bypass your recycle bin, if you do receive this attachment "hold down the SHIFT + DEL buttons and this will take it off the computer. I don't want alot of time taken on the list with everyone "warning" everyone else. This is the warning.I hope you take the time to read the link I am sending. This virus is called the "I Love You" virus and takes MANY different forms so please, please be sure of the contents of your attachments with each other. (I myself am guilty of being over anxious for "new data" so I can understand) but please think twice before opening anything. Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
Researching the Botts family of Va, Ky, and Indiana beginning with Thomas Botts of 1710. Carrie Koster
Dear fellow Botts, As I'm still at a very preliminary stage in my own research I'm afraid I don't have much info' to offer yet, but I hate to see all Debra's efforts passing by with apparently little response. (Having said that, like most people, when the "mailbag" gets very frantic I sometimes end up deleting whole blocks of messages without having had chance to read them, so forgive me if my above statement is unjustified). In my case, I'm especially interested in BOTT families in Yorkshire, UK and more specifically in the city of Sheffield. Anyone else have interests in this area? best regards to all, Andrew (born Sheffield 1954) PS Thanks for all your work in maintaining the list Debra ! ******************************************** Andrew H. Rhinehart Bott b. 1726 married Mary Elizabeth Bleckroth b.1730 d. about 6 of 1805. Does anyone have any information about this person? Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
I understand that Hermanus BOTT born 1697 in Palatine, Germany married Catherine Hahn in 1749 in York county PA. I also know there are records stating that he married and unknown woman in 1722.Since he immigrated in 1743 then this 1722 marriage would have been in Germany. Also, all of the childrens births occur before the date of the 1749 marriage. So I am looking for info on who could have been the mother of these children and therefore my ancestor instead of Catherine Hahn. Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
In regards to the Roll Call please do not send any postings to me personally, please send them to the list. Good Luck!! Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
Okay, this list is much too quiet. Let's have a ROLL CALL, beginning now (April 16) and ending Sunday night at midnight(April 23). To make sure that your posting just doesn't get the old "delete button" by most persons, DO NOT just type ROLL CALL in the subject line as many of those don't get opened. Put something like this: State or County/Name of Ancestor/any dates this way everyone WANTS to open it instead of deleting without reading!!:) PLEASE include the STATE(s)/COUNTIES and NAME for the ancestor you are hunting IN THE SUBJECT LINE, and give more information about your ancestors - including dates and migration and spouses' surnames - in the message part of your post, so that you can get maximum benefit from this roll call. Please assist with any of the ROLL CALL posts that you possibly can - if we all focus together these next few days, we can maximize our efforts for the benefit of all of us. Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
Hello Listers I am thinking of something that would help everyone maybe. I know that the majority of us spend much time surfing the internet looking for websites pertaining to our lineage. So..how about if everyone posts what they maybe have found and they consider to be one of the best for that surname. I am reffering to a website that you depend on or frequently consult for updates and info on the surname. Also, include any website that you may have found that you feel is just the best as a searchable database. Please limit these to free sites. I am thinking this may help everyone, and not everyone has access to pay sites. Just place "Websites" in your subject line and list the websites and if there are any special directions please include them or make note of what these sites may pertain to. Thanks and I hope everyone has some really special sites for us. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
I am researching the line descended from Hermanus Bott, founder of Bottstown in York county PA. His son Rinehart is the father of Mary Catherine Bott born 3-10-1752 who married Francis Winkler. What I am most interested in is the fact that prior to Hermanus marriage to Catherine Hahn he married someone unknown about 1722 in Germany. This means that whoever that was would be the actual mother of the children and not Catherine Hahn. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
Does anyone out there know exactly where or I will settle for about where in Germany, Hermanus Bott came from? Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
My aunt who is in her 80s gave me two photo albums of my family last night that has been sitting in her basement for the last 57 years. They are all of my family (Jacob BOTT and Christina STEIDINGER). There were over 100 photos with many tintypes. Unfortunately they were not labeled and she only knew who the people were in 4 photos. Any ideas what I can do to identify these people? I've thought about creating a website and posting them there. What do you think. Randall Bott
Are there any definitve Biographies on Hermanus BOTT around? I know that today Ancestry.com is running for 10 days free York County PA bios and I would think that his would be in there but it is not. I would be most interested in a bio on him and also in any info regarding any of his children. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
This might be just a little off subject but in regards to all of you I see posting with much frustration and getting no results, I thought some humor was in order. I saw this last year on another list and just laughed. It relieved much of the tension and headaches(from the brick walls) so I hope it gives someone a laugh also. I have thought so very many times of writing an open letter as follows! LETTER TO MY ANCESTORS After spending a frustrating evening pouring over illegible handwriting in badly damaged and out of focus parish registers - and still NOT finding my relatives, I thought it was time to send an open email (at www.ofcoursethereisaHeaven.com) to all my "Upstairs" relatives who have gone to Heaven (99% of them) or the Other Place (1%). The text follows. (Feel free to insert your own relative's names where appropriate.) "Dear __________________: I am your _____________ and living in the early 21st century here in___________, ______. I am sitting in front of a microfilm projector (I'll explain what that is in a later email) in a special library run by the LDS (nice people, but later on them, too) trying to decipher the small and shaky handwriting of your parish's minister/vicar/curate (choose one). He must have been either vertically challenged or had palsy - because it's unreadable! At least I think it's your parish! I'm not even sure of the decade. Thanks for leaving such a good paper trail! (Sarcasm intended.) According to family legend, you and your wife ___________ had _____ children, some of whom lived beyond infancy. Yet not a single one was recorded in the parish records! I can't even find your marriage certificate. You two WERE married, right? Didn't you know that there would be legions of people like me fanatically spending their waking hours and small fortunes looking for any and all traces of your lives? Were you just stubborn, couldn't afford the fees, or not members of the Established (or any) Church? You're wondering, "What's all the fuss, we're dead as doornails?" We're not sure, but I think down here we're infected with the same disease: Rootsus obsessionus. Of course, WE are going to leave better records for our descendants! Anyway, I'm glad I was able to vent my frustrations upward. If I couldn't do that, I'd have probably popped the obnoxious researcher next to me who is right now translating an old parish record in German - and out loud, for Pete's sake! I have an idea.... When I'm "dead-on" (pardon the expression) to finding the correct record, give me some sort of sign. Make the projector bulb flicker twice. Or, if it must be done in the privacy of my home, I have a Labrador Retriever. Talk through her. That will get my attention for sure. Thanks for listening. I'll be better in the morning..... I'll be back at the library tomorrow night for Round 14, so catch me there. Sincerely, Your ________________, Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net

Listmembers: I would like to propose a different type of Roll Call so to speak. If you would like to participate that is great. My theory is that alot of times you may have the names of the spouses, parents and/or children. But what you might lack are simply "a birthdate, or a death date or a marriage date".You might have in your files, everything about "who" they were and "where" they were, but nothing on the specifics of "WHEN" they were. To make this as easy as possible place in the subject line either: BIRTHDATES/DEATH DATES/MARRIAGE DATES Then just make a simple list of persons that you need this particular data on. Nothing else, just a list of names(first and last please), of course if this is a very common name put "child of" or some identifying item. This idea may sound rather odd, but I am trying to generate some activity on the list and help others at the same time. Others may have the dates you need. If this works well, maybe later we can do one for "spouses" or "burials". One final note: Please,Please post these to the list and not to me personally. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
For those of you who may have been concerned in the issue of the Quickel's Cemetery, here is the message from the man who heard it from the reporter, the judge's decision late this afternoon. Debbie -----Original Message----- From: STOUGH1752@aol.com [mailto:STOUGH1752@aol.com] Sent: Monday, March 06, 2000 4:25 PM To: PAYORK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAYORK] Quickel's-Judge gives decision Hello I just received a phone call from a reporter for a local newspaper. She told me that the Judge has given his decision. Maybe I will wait and tell everyone later. No, I will tell you all now. The reporter informed me that the Judge has denied Quickel's request to build on the cemetery. This is great news to many of us. The church can appeal the decision, which I am betting they do. I think we can all pat ourselves on the back, because we all made a difference. Thanks to all. I will keep everyone up to date with the developments. Blake
