    1. [BOTT] Lets Make Our List Work for Us!!
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. Good Morning Listmembers: Its been most quiet on our list lately. I for one am interested in seeing some new postings and possibilities. Lets have a Roll Call and get some activity going here. For the benefit of the newer subscribers; a roll call is simply my way of saying "hey, come on let's put some queries up here". Just a few simple rules to follow to ensure the best chance for your post to be read and answered. 1. Make the subject line contain-- Person's Name(capitalize your surname)/years you are searching/place(s) if you know it. 2. Include as much info as possible for a good match. 3. Answer as many postings as you have info for. 4.DON'T SEND YOUR POSTING TO ME--send it to the list address (don't hit reply). Let's run this roll call from today Sunday March 11,2001 until next Sunday March 18, 2001 at midnight. I wish everyone good luck and let the postings begin!! 1. [BOTT] subscribing and unsubscribing
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. Listmembers: There are very simple instructions regarding subscribe and non subscribing to the lists. All that is necessary is to address unsubscribes to: YOURLISTNAME-L-request@rootsweb.com place NOTHING but your name in the body of the text. No signatures, no forwarded messages The only time I should be doing this is if you are not able to be taken off the list after you have followed the above instructions. I will be deleting any unsubscribes directed to an incorrect address, such as to me personally or to the list. These instructions were given when everyone subscribed. 1. [BOTT] RULES
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. Welcome to the BOTT mailing list!We are so pleased that you have joined our family of researchers. Whether you are a subscriber of this list only, or do subscribe to many others, there are some rules to make things go nice and smoothly, and without disturbing the peace. Postings to the list should be clear and understandable and not of a private nature. It has to have more substance and should be of interest to at least some of the other subscribers. No such postings like "Bea I'll see you in the morning, keep the coffeepot on", or "don't know what a tagline is, do you?", and a follow-up to other people's question like "Me too". These are no-no's!!! Every subscriber has a private address, you want to know something of him, write to him, not to the list. On the other hand, if there was a good query and you have the answer, put it over the list, because that is why we maintain these lists. Nothing is more frustrating then to read a query, and not seeing any answers. What this all amounts to is ' use some common sense', and check the archives periodically, our mail list archives are like our Private Library, all the books are right there on the shelves. Or like a big Encyclopedia, all the key words are there, and if not, then nothing has been posted on that subject. In order to use the archives successfully, you must enter a word from either the subject line or from the message text. That is why I am so insistent on the correct usage of subject lines. You will never find something under an unrelated subject line. Please remember to unsubscribe during periods of time that you will be away from your computer, such as vacations. You can easily resubscribe later. If for any reason, at any time a message of yours comes through the list with an attachment that contains a virus (for example:.exe) you will be notified and unsubbed from the list immediately. You will be notified, in case you are unaware of it, and unsubbed to protect our other subscribers to the list. Read the taglines for general instructions, and use the mail list archives on a regular basis: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=bott My final comment--when contacting me regarding the list, please specify which list you are reffering to. Thanks and I can better help you that way. GUIDELINES for SUBSCRIBERS to a MAIL LIST PLEASE DO NOT SEND - * PERSONAL MESSAGES - POST to the LIST or PERSONALLY to the INDIVIDUAL??? Just ask yourself if most of the people on the list would want to read it; if so, send it to the list; otherwise, send it privately. * PRIVATE MESSAGES sent to you, without permission from the sender. * ATTACHMENTS (attached files) of any sort to mailing lists. This includes GEDCOM files, zipped files, and any other type of attachment. * HTML or RTF (rich text format) formatting Your message will be rejected and returned to you by the RootsWeb Server. * VIRUS HOAXES or CHAIN LETTERS (SPAM)or COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING,PERSONAL CHAT LETTERS,RELIGIOUS POSTINGS. Sorry these just don't belong on the list. However, if you feel you have a justified virus to report please send this info to me privately:debbiej@iquest.net ============ LANGUAGE & COMMENTS Do not use abusive or degrading communication of any form on a RootsWeb list. Your list moderator will remove you from the list and will block your posts from reaching the list. BASHING - FLAMING Do not "bash" a list subscriber. If you do not agree with a mail message, fine. (There's always the "Delete" key.) Do not send "bashing" comments to the list. PLEASE FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES!!! 1.SUBJECT LINES-Please use the subject line effectively list your SURNAME and location if possible.Don't reuse the subject line. 2.REPLIES-Please try to post as many replies to the list as possible. If it is a reply or futher info you think would benefit the majority then please place on the list.Don't reply simply to say "I don't know". Following these guidelines helps to provide a list more enjoyable to everyone. 1. [BOTT] List Administrative
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. Listmembers: I am most certain that almost all of you have been on our list for quite sometime. I have tried recently to go through our list archives and also our list "rules". I have attempted to make them a little more lax in some areas and also more clear on others. Most of us know all the basics, however there are new subscribers at the rate of about 10 per week. Aside from what alot of persons think, I am not a meany. I am attempting to create a list that we can all gain alot of info and data from. I love to chat as well if not more then the next person, however, I do it off the list. Reasoning for this is that any mail going to the list is in our archives. Many personal, chatty items don't need to be there. I am going to start incorporating some basic and helpful guidelines in the taglines that are attached to every email sent to the list. Please use these, as they will assist you in accessing the archives and give instructions in other areas. My pet peeve as everyone knows is the usage of the subject line. This is most important..not only for your own benefit but for the purpose of archiving. If you wish to find something you posted last year, you would need to enter a word from either the subject line or the message text. If the subject line is irrelevant, then you would never find the item. So it really helps everyone. I am sending out the next post with the new and improved guidelines for the list, this is mainly to be able to get this into the archives so that new subbers can access it as needed. It is a great list when we all post for the best results for everyone. So the next posting entitled Rules will pertain to that. I was able to take a quick look and it raises some questions. I descend from (Johann) Conrad Bott, Hessian soldier b abt 1760. Is it possible that one of your Botts had a son or nephew who might be my forebear? We know that he came to this country in the 1770's and fought a couple of battles with the British before changing sides, fighting for the Colonists. He married an English woman and had a family of 6 who ended up in Ohio. Russ Ehler

The webpages' focus is primarily on these Bott's in Germany. (It's my first attempt at creating a webpage; so, in addition to any genealogical observations, I would appreciate any comments on how it interfaces with your system--or even if it works). www.community.webtv.net/deangen/BottFamily thanks, Dean Sanders ==== BOTT Mailing List ==== Please use the subject line effectively and don't recycle them ============================== The easiest way to stay in touch with your family and friends! http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST1 --WebTV-Mail-5142-157--
