Hello everyone! I have just joined this list, and I have a family mystery that I want to put out there and see if anyone can help. (This is Boston-related, so please bear with me.) After working on her own lines for 23 years, my grandmother has not been able to find any additional information on her grandmother. So, here is what we know... Mary MORPHET DRYDEN b. 21 Oct 1863, Greenwood VA or WV m. 15 Nov 1883, Scituate, Plymouth, MA (married Cassius Elmer Cushman) d. 15 Aug 1950, Brookline, MA Where the mystery comes in is on the marriage record. When it gives her name, It says Mary Morphet Dryden and there is an arrow pointing to Dryden and a comment that says (Adopted). Under her Father's name, it says George W. Morphet Adopted. For Mother's name it says May (Dryden). My interpretation of this is that her mother's Married name may have been Dryden, therefore her father's name, so that is why she uses it as a surname. What my grandmother remembers is that this George W. Morphet may have been a lawyer, and may have lived in Baltimore. We don't know what happened to Mary's parents, but I have spent some time working the Census records, and have had no results. I am also looking up Civil War service records, in case her father was killed in the war. So far, no luck. We know at some point, George W. Morphet sent Mary to Boston to attend Mt. Vernon Ladies' School, on 6 Aliston Street, Boston. There was a Rev. Robert CUSHMAN who taught there and we think he had a son named Austin Sprague CUSHMAN. (Austin's mother was most likely Lucy SPRAGUE. We think the school was run by two ladies, possibly Mary's Aunts, but we don't know what their names were. If there is anyone who has any information on this school or these people, could you please e-mail me? My grandmother would be thrilled with anything I could turn up! Thanks in advance for any hints, and sorry this was so long! -Tamara __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
