    3. In researching my family history, I have found that a number of my Sicilian ancestors, as well as many others not related to me, used the address of "3 North Square" in Boston's North End, as their address of final destination (Ellis Island Database). I found scant information on internet about this address. There was a bank located there for a couple of years, then a funeral parlor, and today it is a famous Italian restaurant (Mama Mia's I believe). My ancestors came over between 1910 and 1920. Would any one know what was located there? A tenement house? An immigration station? An employment office? What? Ken Milano

    1. [BOSTON] MCCARTHY, Jeremiah and Catherine
    2. J. McGrath
    3. I found Jeremiah and Catherine MCCARTHY in the 1880 Census in South Boston. They are on NA Film T9-0556 in the 682 ED, Ward 13, Page 23, lines 16 and 17. Their children, son-in-law (CRAFT) and grandson also are listed. Jeremiah's name is mispelled as Jerimiah. What I can't read is the family's street address. Would some kind soul with a more legible copy of Page 23 look up their address, or obtain it for me from the South Boston 1880 City Directory? Thank you, Joanne San Diego, CA

    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Good morning, I'd like to offer a suggestion to people who are living in other areas of the country and are researching ancestors or relatives in Massachusetts. Many years ago I discovered that most States offer "free maps" of their State. In most cases they are available from the Dept. of Transportation of each State, and they are called .. "Official Transportation Map of Massachusetts," for example. Also, in most cases, you can write to the State House of each State to request that a copy be mailed to you. And, in MA, I believe a telephone call will get you a copy mailed to you. You also can get very good maps of States by writing to the Dept. of Travel and Tourism, also located in the State Houses (in most cases). Many "Depts. of Travel, etc." advertise in travel magazines, and some have web sites. Massachusetts offers a "Massachusetts Travel Guide" which includes a map of the State. It is of magazine quality (and size). They can be requested on-line (for free). (When doing a Google search, remember to use quotation marks.) Through one means or another, I have collected a "State map" of each state I am researching (and each State where my relatives are living). And, I refer to them .. a lot! Maps of other countries (Canada, Britain, etc.) are a little more difficult to obtain. But, you can try to find the "Dept. of Tourism" in the "country" or "province" you are interested in - either through the Internet or in a travel magazine. I have also obtained some from eBay purchases. And, it doesn't matter how old the maps are. Your ancestors were probably there in the 1700's and 1800's, so, if a map is from the very early 1900's, so much the better ! Also, locally, there are wonderful "street-map books." They are for different areas of MA and southern NH. I cannot offer you information on who sells them on these Lists, but, if you are interested, I will give you the (MA) company name and address privately. They are expensive, and I don't know how the company handles out-of-state requests. We keep one in each car, and an older (very much used) one in the home. (I have absolutely nothing to do with this map-book company.) May you have a HAPPY CHRISTMAS or a quiet, peaceful holiday weekend, whichever is your choice !!! Betty (near Lowell, MA) "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings." Hodding Carter, Jr. "What does Jesus want in his "stocking" on Christmas morning? Loving kindness, a warm heart, and the stretched out hand of tolerance!" The Bishop's Wife (1947)

    1. [BOSTON] Italian or Sicilian communities, North End circa 1910-1920's
    2. Greetings! First time poster... I was wondering if someone on the list was familiar with Italian and or Sicilian Italian neighborhoods in the North End section of Boston, circa 1910-1920's. I would like to get an idea of just how large it was geographically speaking. I had family that lived there at that time period at 148 Salem Street. I believe this is the North End. Also they were at 5 Price, or Prince Street. I was wondering what "Streets" were the main streets for this community. Was it 5 blocks by 5 blocks? Bigger? Smaller? I tried researching on the internet, but only get vague ideas...anybody have any good sources for this? via internet or books?
