In researching my family history, I found that some family members had their own Photography Studio located at 3 North Square, 3 & 5 Prince Street. I was wondering if anyone on the list ever came across this studio as a place where your family pictures were taken....The information I have is as follows: 1910 Federal Census, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, ED#1332, Ward 6 (Part of), Precinct 4 (Part of) Taken: April 15th, 1910. Calogero Amaru & Teresa Milano ? [possibly] 3 Prince Street Lelly Amaro, head, male, white, 29, married, married one year, born in Italy, parents born in Italy, immigrated 1907, alien, speaks Italian, no English, photographer, own shop, paid on own account, is currently working, doesnt read or write, lives by rent (house), 1,7,6,X Teressina Amaro, wife, female, white, 19, married, married one year, born in Italy, parents born in Italy, immigrated , 1909, alien, speaks Italian, no English, doesnt work, doesnt read or write, I believe this couple to be Cologero AMARU and Teresa MILANO. Teresa is my grandfather's first cousin. The ages and years of immigration match their Ellis Island records even though the first names appear to be slightly different (a different spelling of Teresa and instead of Cologero it looks like Lelly). Here is the Ellis Island records: Cologero Amaru & Teresa Milano, arrived at Ellis Island on August 19, 1909, on the ship Regina D Italia sailing from Naples, Campania, Italy. Calogero Amaru, 28, male, married, occupation title is obscured, hard to make out, musician? Or merchant? Or something like that with the first letter M but it doesnt look like mason. Reads and writes, last lived in Pietraperzia, left nobody behind. Going to Boston, Mass., to 3 North Square with family [no family member named]. With him is his wife Teresa Milano, 18, female, married, housewife, also resided in Pietraperzia where she left her father Filippo Milano behind. She is also going with her husband to family at 3 North Square, Boston, Mass. Cologero paid for his trip himself as did his wife, Cologero states he has been to America before, 1907-1909, in Boston. Teresa Milano never been to America. You can see that the ages of this couple and the immigration years match that of the 1910 Census. Has anyone ever heard of this photographer? There were other AMARU family members who were also working at this place, Placido AMARU & Michele MILANO. Thanks, Ken Milano

Christine, The Boston Public Library has "old" Boston Newspapers and has done searches for obituaries for me. Their Net site is www.bpl.org If one is a member one might be able to search online. I am not a member so I have not done such and do not know if the old newspapers are online. Their section on Questions tells one that calling is the quickest but that same section has a place to write and send one's question in. Their answers are on a first come, first serve. Good luck Marcie ----- Original Message ----- From: "christine" <granny1945@btopenworld.com> To: <BOSTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2004 2:05 PM Subject: [BOSTON] old newspapers > Hello Listers > I wonder if SKP has access to old Boston Newspapers? > I am trying to get details of the death of a relative in 1884 > Joseph Calvert WHEATER was accidentally killed by the premature discharge of > a gun. > 4th July 1884. > He was a student at Boston Art School > I thought there may have been an incident report in the local press. > If not then maybe an Obituary. > I would appreciate any help > Christine > > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.559 / Virus Database: 351 - Release Date: 07/01/2004 > > > > ==== BOSTON Mailing List ==== > Boston Historical Society: > http://www.bostonhistory.org > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. I am researching two families (amongst others): AMARU & MILANO. I found a good bit on MILANO but AMARU is rather elusive. Teresa Milano married Cologero AMARU. I am trying to find how Cologero AMARU was related to Placido AMARU, assuming of course there is a relationship. They both live at 5 Prince Street or 3 North Square, both addresses being in the Italian section of the North End, Boston. I had access to the 1911 and 1917 city directories. Found Placido, but not Cologero. Anyone have access to other directories between 1900 and 1920? Calogero from what I can tell did not immigrate until about 1906, or 1907, whereas Placido Amaru must have immigrated sometime before 1906, as he was naturalized in 1905 (September). I suppose the 1910 Census might have something, but I do not have access to it. thanks for any help.... Ken Milano

Yes this is my person,. I tried my local libary and the surrounding ones and they only carry the Boston Globe from 1988-1994 and then the last 6 months. the only other way I've been able to obtain a copy is to go into town, unfortunately for me, this is not something I can easily do or very often as it requires a lot of planning around work, kids....etc. David C. Could someone tell me if 149 Richmond is the same today as is was in 1917? I found an ancestor [Filippo & Michele Milano] who lived at 149 Richmond in Boston. I assume it was in the North End section. When I looked at the part of the city directory for street index, I found the Richmond Street, but with brackets and the word "Hanover" following it. Does that mean that is use to be called Hanover and changed to Richmond? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi G-Nell It appears that a form of that same company was around much earlier. E. D. WINSLOW & SON were tea brokers in 1887, located at 19 Broad Street, Boston. Rob Jackson
