    2. Ray Brown
    3. Jim That is very true, the 8,200 that I just added for Boston, MA are the ones that are in the City Clerks books with no other place listed. No place listed does not aleays mean performed in Boston, but with what I am workin on I would say that at least 99% were in Boston. I am about 1/4 through the next part, which has people from Boston who were married in other towns. This has same marriages from all over the satae. Most are in the eastern part of the state, but they go as far west as Stockbridge. From the two books there probably are about 2,000 marrages performed in other towns, which will make a large file. Almost all of these have the place of residence for both people as well as who performed the marrage and the town. It would be good it all the marriages listed where they were performed, but we can not post things that are not in the records and would only be guesses. At least these have the neme of the Minister or J.P. who performed them so people can check to see where he lived in that time. In the book that I am using now there are probably amother 3,000 listed by the church that they got married in. These are the only ones that we can say for sure were performed in Boston, but people can not get a certificate for these as they were not recorded with the City Clerk. These Churched had a lot more marrages, but most in the City records so not listed a 2nd time in this part. Like anything that people find on the net they should use it as a starting point, and check the records them selfs when found. This would go for all web sites, not just mine. Yes, even comercial sites as they just take things out of published books like the rest of us puttig info on the net. With these being published by the Boston Records Commisionerrs I hope that they checked all for places first. Below is what the report of out of town marriages will look like when it is finished. Of course the one on at the web site will have a lot more people and lines not wrapped by the email program. Pleease notice that each line has at the end where the marrage was performed. 2. Andrea: I would write for a copy of the first Mrs. Bates death record: Vital Statistic Records The Massachusetts Archives holds vital statistics, records of births, deaths and marriages in Massachusetts, for the years 1841 to 1910. The Archives has index books for the records. Each index volume includes five years, and names are sorted alphabetically within each five-year period. The information found in vital records may include: Birth records Place and date of birth, name, residence, names, birthplaces, and occupations of parents. Marriage records Place and date of marriage, names, ages, residences, occupations, birthplaces, parents of bride and groom. Death records Place and date of death, residence, spouse, age, occupation and birthplace of deceased, cause of death and place of burial, name and birthplace of parents. **** Certified copies of births, marriages and deaths from 1841 to 1910 can be ordered in person or by mail. Please provide the name, date, and location for each event. A maximum of five certificates can be ordered at one time. Include a separate check, made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for $3 for each certificate requested. See duplication services for additional information about copies. For vital records before 1841, original materials remain in the city or town clerk's office and can be found in the city or town hall. See the Massachusetts City and Town Directory for contact information. For more info - go to this website: http://www.state.ma.us/sec/arc/arccol/colidx.htm#vital Lucy

    1. Marriages in Boston to 1809
    2. Ray Brown
    3. I just completed adding the marriages recorded in the Boston City records to 1809 to my web site. The book for the years 1752 to 1761 was missing for a long time before these were published by the records commisioners so they are not included. The Int's for those years is being typed up to go on another web site, but will be available to you when ready. The list of Int's for those years is big as they published all Int's rather than just the ones with no marrage recorded in Boston like other years. These may be found at: http://www.rays-place.com/town/ma/boston/ ABOUT THESE RECORDS These were all listed as they are recorded in the Boston City Records. Several of the City Clerks were not that good at spelling like me, so there are several veristions of the spelling of many names (both first and surnames). You will also notice diferant spillings of other town names at doferant times through these pages. Be sure to check all posabilities of names for people that you are looking for. TO BE ADDED There are about 70 pages of marrages to 1809 listed by Church (only marriages that were not recorded by the City Clerks) that I will be working on shortley to have it all completed. Does anyone on this email list know if the Records Commisiones published another book of Marriages starting with 1810? If they did I will try and find a copy later to add to this listing. I also have about a hundred pages of people from Boston that were married in otherr towns to type and add to this section of the web site. Maby some day I will have it finished<?> Before going any further I will be setting up a Boston-Charlestown-Dorchester Gen Web site for all these records. I included Charlestown and Dorchester as they were both anned into the City of Boston in the 1800's and there records are keep in Boston. Dave Swerdfeger has been typing up the Dorchester Vital Records to 1850 that will also be part of this site. The Births are now online at: http://www.rays-place.com/town/ma/dorchester The marrriages and deaths will be added soon. I also have a 1850 City Directory for Charlestown that will be added. If anyone hear would like to type that up for the GenWeb just let me know. That will be easy compaired to the vital records that we have been adding to this. If anyone has anything that they would like to have added to the GenWeb site when built such as histories of any of the 3 cities they would be appreciated by all the users of it. 3. I have a possible lead on a mystery ancestress who married Sylvester Bates and gave birth to Norman Francis Bates in Derby Center, VT, in November 1839, and to Georgiana Bates in Boston in June 1843. This Mrs. Bates died in Boston two or three years later (he remarried in June 1847). Sylvester's family lived in Hartland, VT, and moved to Derby Center, VT, around 1840. The lead someone was kind enough to send me is the following marriage listing that appeared in the Massachusetts Centinel/Columbian Centinel of August 15, 1838: "Bates, Sylvester, m. Eliza J. Marsh, in Boston." I have not been able to find any other marriage record for this wedding, nor have I been able to find Mrs. Bates' death listing. (However, the only on-line place I know to search Suffolk Co. records are those available through the NEHGS web-site, which may not have all years input yet.) Would there be church records available to search for the marriage, intentions, or death notice? I know that Sylvester Bates was in Boston during those years because I found him in the city directory: 1843 July "Bates Sylvester, clerk, Pemberton House" 1844 July "Bates (Sylvester) & Parker (O.), restorator, 4 Cornhill et." 1846 July "Bates, Sylvester, clerk, Pemberton House" Thanks for any help you can offer! 1. Re: Can someone suggest the best place to search for burial records for Boston area?
    2. Judith Graham
    3. Hello and many thanks for your welcoming messages/comments/suggestions! It's sometimes hard to make a difficult problem concise. I'll try to be as brief as possible! In the 1871 census Nova Scotia census record our ancestor, born Mariah CAMERON, (later known as Anna Maria Cameron White -there are various permutations and combinations!) shows up as Mariah Cameron, born in Colchester County, NS ca 1848. Her married name was WHITE, husband's name and place/date of marriage unknown. A search on the 1880 census on LDS website reveals Anna Cameron, born 1848 in Nova Scotia, a "married" nurse living in Boston, household E.K. Dunbar. Perhaps she may have said she was "married" because she had an illegitimate daughter in 1871 before moving to MA to study nursing? I don't know the name of the hospital, but the following 1880 census infomation for Boston, taken from LDS search, might help........... By using the "previous or next household" on the LDS website, the information there reveals that a few doors away from where "Anna" lived (in a hotel type situation?) there appears to be a hospital of some sort (perhaps a convent? or hospice?), with a couple of doctors and a pharmacist living between where Anna lived and the hospital. I don't know the street name or names of the hotel or hospital, but perhaps it may be possible to find this out? A land record here in NS in 1906 between she and her sister (her only living sibling at that time) indicates that she was living in Charlestown, MA. In this record she was listed as Maria White. No record of her husband's first name, nor her marriage, has been found. It is also known that she returned to Nova Scotia, probably in early 1900's, and raised her late sister's grandson (her grandson's mother also having died) and that she was still living here ca 1917. Local information indicates that she was still living here ca 1928 and at about that time she because ill with cancer and was nursed by a niece. Anna's daughter, who lived most of her adult life in Worcester, MA would certainly have had the means to see to her mother's burial and headstone. Records for the 3 cemeteries in Anna's home village of Five Islands have been checked and there is nothing to indicate she was buried here. Thus the conclusion is that she likwly died in NS but was buried in MA. Her parents and siblings were Presbyterian, so it is very likely that was her religion. Any help to unravel rhis mystery would certainly be appreciated and if I can repay by reciprocal research I would be pleased to do so. Thank you, Judi Graham

    1. Can someone suggest the best place to search for burial records for Boston area?
    2. Judith Graham
    3. Hello - This is my first posting to the list. I live in Nova Scotia and am hoping for a little help. I am hoping to find out either where to write to find burial records (not death records) for the Boston area, or even more hopefully, to find someone who might currently be searching these records and who might be able to do a RAOGK with respect to same. I would assume that there might be some sort of index that would make searching easy? We have an ancestor whom, we believe, died in Nova Scotia sometime roughly in the range of 1928 to 1934, but whose remains may have been returned to the Boston area for burial, since she lived and nursed most all her life after moving there from NS as a young woman. I live in the Truro, Colchester area of NS and would be happy to do lookups in the land/probate/census records in the Colchester area as a return favour. Thank you, Judith Graham

    1. Re: [BOSTON] Can someone suggest the best place to search for burial records for Boston area?
    2. Dick Watts
    3. Hi, Judith: Welcome to the list. When you say "Boston area" I assume you mean any City or Town surrounding Boston and not just Boston itself? Most "burial records" would be with the individual cemeteries or possibly a funeral home. One exception would be if the person was Catholic and buried in a Catholic cemetery, the Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Cemeteries office can be reached at 1-888-919-7926 (toll free, at least in US). A Death Notice or an Obituary for the person "might" contain an "interment" statement. That would give you the name of the cemetery. If you have a name, please post it. If you have any possible City or Town post it. You mentioned nursing as a profession. Do you know which hospital(s) the person was employed at? That might give us a "search area" to look at. For example, the Town Cemetery (Lindenwood) here in Stoneham does not have a separate office, but is serviced by the Public Works Department and all burial records are at the :Public Works office. The Catholic Cemetery (St. Pats) records are at the before mentioned Catholic Cemeteries office, which is physically located in Malden, MA.
