    1. [BOSTON] ..41 Chardon Street in Boston .. 1900 to 1910 (DEXTER, CLARK)
    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Hello, I do not know much about Census forms. But, I'd like to know if there is any way to find out how many people were living in "The Temporary Home for Women and Children" when it existed at ..41 Chardon Street .. in Boston from 1900 to 1910. This street formerly was just outside of "Scollay Square," and it is now .. New Chardon Street which is part of the Government Center. (There was also a "Wayfarers' Lodge" on Hawkins Street which was off of Chardon Street.. which held "able-bodied pauper men." If it is too difficult to find this information on a Census Form, would an organization (or the "Overseers of the Poor") show up in a Boston City Directory? I would like to find out which years my grandmother lived in "The Temporary Home" which would have been between 1900 and 1910. She was born in Boston in Feb. 1889 and was "a foundling." In Mar. 1892, she was adopted by an older couple, whom I believe to be her grandparents. They changed her name to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, after the Adoptive mother's name: Mrs. Mary Anna DEXTER, nee' Mary Anna CLARK of Westport, MA. John and Mary DEXTER, Age 55, seem to have moved from Westport to Melrose, MA, just to adopt the baby. Unfortunately, Mrs. DEXTER died in the spring of 1899, and John DEXTER "disappeared into thin air." He was not listed in the 1900 Census for .. New England. So, the young Mary Anna DEXTER went to live ..somewhere.. in 1900. And, she was reportedly in "homes" from 1900 until 1908 or 1909, when she went to live in a girlfriend's home in Medford, MA. While going through "papers" in my mother's home, I found a certified copy of Mrs. Dexter's death certificate which showed that she was still Married when she died. This means that John Dexter was still alive in April 1899. Also in the papers were handwritten notes mentioning: William and Mary CLARK and an uncle, George CLARK, who moved to California. My grandmother, at the time of her marriage in 1911, believed that William and Mary CLARK were her birth-parents (probably somehow related to the Adoptive mother, nee' Mary Anna CLARK, daughter of James CLARK of Little Compton, RI, and Westport, MA. ... But, I had her Adoption Records opened a few years ago, and her name .. at birth .. or soon after birth .. was Daisy WATROUS. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: "The Temporary Home" started out on nearby Tremont Street in Boston possibly in the 1860's, but later on moved over to the Chardon Street address. I believe this multi-story building held the offices for other organizations also. "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings." Hodding Carter, Jr.

    2. Joy & Rob
    3. Hello Is there anyone on the list that has a subscription to Ancestory Com that would be able to do a search for me in the 1920 Census. Its for Massachusetts, Suffolk County and the name I am after is Elias MALONE and living with him is Robena M PEERS or maybe its spelt Robina M PEERS. I was given a copy as a JPEG but unfortunately it not big enough to read. When I try to enlarge it, the quality disappears and then its not clear enough to read. I think the enumeration district is 628 or 675. Hoping someone can help. Regards Joy Light

Melleray, Waterford, Ireland John was the first of the family to come to Massachusetts from Ireland. He came with his siblings Patrick, Kate and Laurence O'Donnell. They left a red headed sister behind in Ireland. John settled in Boston, Mass. where he married and raised a family. He suffered a stroke as a young man and lost his memory. His son Louie took him back to Ireland on Doctor's orders to see if it would help him. When they returned he was better but had lost his Irish brogue. It was such a struggle to get here, that the family didn't talk much about their early days in Ireland. He was a professional dancer in Ireland. 1. [BOSTON] OFF TOPIC Saugus Lookup
    2. Joy & Rob
    3. Hi Sorry for the off topic post, but can someone tell me how I would go about chasing more about this fellow. Please bear in mind that I live in Melbourne Australia. William JACKSON born I think in Middlewich Cheshire 1775 but probably moved to Manchester in Lancashire from where he then came to America. I have inadvertently lost the actual date of his death. I know in was 1829. It was from a vital index on the Saugus list that I was given the date. Obituary for William Jackson from Saugus Newspaper. DEATH "At Saugus on Sunday, WILLIAM JACKSON ESQ., Aged 59. He was a representative of that town in the General Court, and for two or three was past had labored under such severe disposition that he was detained from his ??? and had been unable to return to his family till the day of his decease. He was a native of Manchester, in England; and was an uncommon instance of a foreigner obtaining a seat in our State Legislature. For two or three years past he had been an acting magistrate in the county. Now I assume that to be part of the State Legislature that he would have had to be naturalised. How would I find out where and when. Now back to Boston topic. Also chasing any PEERS family members. In particular I have been given a 1920 Census entry for Robena M PEERS living in East Boston. She is the mother in law of Elias Andrew MALONE, and the mother of Helena MALONE nee PEERS. I am trying to find any children of Robena and her husband John Edward PEERS who married in 1875. Found them on the 1880 Census but not from then on. Hope someone can help with the above queries. Regards Joy Light - Melbourne Australia
