It's been my experience that second marriages which were likely the result of a divorce, or "quickie" marriages took place in New Hampshire. I have several in my tree. So if you don't find it in Mass, look in the border towns along NH. ----- Original Message ----- From: "PJ Salis via" <boston@rootsweb.com> To: "List MA Middlesex" <MAMIDDLE@rootsweb.com>, "List Boston" <BOSTON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 3, 2016 3:44:31 PM Subject: [BOSTON] "Gretna Greens" for runaway or quickie marriages Hello List, I just came across this potentially useful reference: https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Gretna_Greens_in_the_United_States To quote: A *Gretna Green* is a favored marriage place. Loren W. BRITTON b Nov 1875 Monticello, ME to John A. and Harriet BRITTON married Jan. 1896 Carleton Co., NB to Frances Augusta GRAHAM. Loren and Frances had 3 children (Clair Weldon 1896, Clayton Charles 1900 and Shirley Lorraine Sep 1904) born in Monticello. ME. In 1918 when Loren Woodfield BRITTON was drafted his nearest relative was Cora BRITTON. Cora was his wife. Cora McLEAN was born in NH in 1891. When did Loren and Cora marry? Loren W BRITTON and Cora McLEAN had 2 children (Herbert Lorin 1913 and Helen Leona 1914) born in Vermont. Loren and Cora went on to MA and had Hazel 1917/8, Philip P 1919/20, Irene R 1920 and twin Eileen R 1920 and Gertrude H 1927. The Massachusetts Death Index shows Cora BRITTON, b 1891 New Hampshire and died Nov 1984. Now the plot thickens! From the Public Archives of New Brunswick Lorin W. BRITTON, widower, age 31, b in Monticello, married Elzina DELONG in May 1907, 18, spinster, d/o Aaron and Gertrude DELONG, b Bloomfield, Car. Co. NB. For Lorin to "legitimately" be a widower there had to be a death of Frances Augusta GRAHAM after Sep 1904 and before May 1907. Does anyone have a death date and place for Frances Augusta? Onward with the thickening mystery. Remember Elzina BRITTON who married Loren BRITTON in 1907? She shows up again marrying Loren's brother George W BRITTON in Dec 1914 in Carleton Co, NB. This time Zena DELONG, 24, d/o Aaron and Gertrude DELONG is a widow. For Zena DELONG to be a legitimate "widow" Lorin BRITTON must have died. But in the 1930 and 1940 census Lorin and Cora are living in Mass. Now to further add mystery. Remember Frances Augusta (GRAHAM) BRITTON who supposedly died between Sep 1904 and May 1907? Well, in 1940 her son Clayton BRITTON, 1900, and his family were enumerated in Foxboro, Norfolk, MA and included in the household was William WRIGHT, 64, stepfather, b ENG and Frances A WRIGHT, 65, stepmother, b Canada. Was that Frances A the same as Frances Augusta BRITTON? I do have a death date from Rootsweb for Frances Augusta GRAHAM, 26 Apr 1946, Foxboro, Mass. So it appears she and Loren "separated" between 1904 and 1907 and the accepted way of designating the marital state was to say "Widower" for Lorin in 1907 when he married Elzina DELONG. To "simplify" some of this jumbled family there appears to have been no living children born to Lorin and Elzina before one of them flitted off and Elzina became a "widow" in the process, and married Lorin's brother George. Ooops, correction, I just found a child.... Warren W. BRITTON, b Feb 1907, 3 months before Elzina married George. From an information sheet at the Cary Library, Houlton Warren was listed as son of Elzina DELONG and Lorne BRITTON and 1/2 brothers of Norvil Britton (Old Orchard), Richard Britton (Monticello), Sisters: Dorothy Hutchinson, Harriet and they were children of George W Britton and Elzina DELONG. When did legal divorces become available in the USA? For those who have read this far and have drawn a chart connecting these people thank you. If you also have some missing dates thank you very much. Norma
Hi Bev, I just looked at that 1900 census page and it says that Richard was a "fireman - stationery." I wonder whether that meant he worked for a Railroad. Hello, I am new to the list and have a puzzle to solve. I am looking for any sign of Mary Rose Anderson, b. 3/24/1908 to Richard Joseph Anderson ( originally from Ireland) and Rose Theresa Pfeiff or Phife (as she spelled it) of Rhode Island. Rosanna or Rose Theresa was born in 1873 in Providence. On some records she lists her birthdate as 1874 to Louis Pfeiff (jeweler) and Mary Kennedy. The marriage record for Rose and Richard in 1899 is found as is the birth record for Mary Rose. City Directories indicate that Richard worked as a laborer. I only have access to online directories that show the address for Richard in the early 1900s. The couple is found in the 1900 census but not in the census records after that date. These people are no where to be found in online records after the birth of Mary Rose. I have searched in Mass and in RI specifically but also generally and cannot find a sign of them. If anyone can direct me to access for directories between 1908 and 1920 I would really appreciate it. Also if anyone else has ideas as to how these folks can be traced further, I would appreciate suggestions. Thanks, Bev W
Hello I am researching a Webster family from Kent, England. It was a large family and they must have been running out of names because the last three sons were named Bacchus, born 1821, Horatio 1822 and Octavus 1828. I have the baptism record of Bacchus, 23 April 1821 at Dymchurch by his father, the Rev William Webster. How many Bacchus Websters can there be born about this time in England? Then there is Bacchus Webster, born England 1811, who signed up for military service with the 47th (Massachusetts?) Regiment in 1863 and died on 13 Sept. 1866 living at 16 Edmands Place Charlestown Mass. I also find the marriage of Bacchus Webster and Catherine BUTLER on 04 Oct 1857 at Cambridge Mass. The death record shows the father to be Frederick William Webster. My man's father was William Webster, but he had a brother named Frederick William. The informant in USA could have got them confused. Is there anything more known locally about this Bacchus Webster in Massachusetts please? Any family? Many thanks Bill Webster Australia

This is a scam. This sort of thing has been going on for ages. The account was likely compromised and I doubt very much if this came from the owner of the address. - This mail is in HTML. Some elements may be ommited in plain text. - I really hope you get this fast. I could not inform anyone about our trip, because it was impromptu. We had to be in Philippines for a Tour..the program was successful, but our journey has turned sour. We misplaced our wallets and cell phones on our way back to the hotel after we went for sight seeing. The wallet contains all the valuables we have. Now, our luggage is in custody of the hotel management pending when we make payment. I am sorry if i am inconveniencing you, but I have only very few people to turn to now. I will be very grateful if I can get a short term loan of ($1,950) from you. This will enable me sort our hotel bills and get my sorry self back home. I will really appreciate whatever you can afford at this moment. I promise to refund it in full as soon as I return. Please let me know if you can be of any assistance. Thanks Ted Taylor
Hello Rev. Nicholson....I would like to help.... 1.In the census 1850 with whom were these seven orphans living with? It was very likely the were with relatives of either parent and came over to Boston/or Canada at Famine time...mid 1840's.[1843-1847]. 2. Do you have death certificates for of any of them? My grandmother's brother had four children with a Margaret Nicholson. He [John L'Estrange who was born in Dublin, Ire in 18 1858] and Margaret were married by a priest from the Holy Name Cathedral [RC] in Roxbury. John was on his deathbed and was most likely receiving the Last Rites...a blessing at death. It appears that the priest blessed them both with sacrament of Matrimony. Margaret was recorded as having come from Belfast, PEI. With the marriage Margaret and the children could receive any meager widow's benefits John may have had from his work with Boston trains at South Station. I'm not sure of Margaret's religion but I suspect she may not have been RC....Their three month old son, Charles died ten days later and Margaret died 15 months later. All of this was VERY SAD for me to learn...there's no denying the hardships and heartaches the Irish suffered in the Boston of those times. I estimate that Margaret may have been born c1860. But having come from PEI the connection to your Nicholson's is a stretch. I suspect the death certs may indicate the place in Ireland they came from...and also cemetery records may too. Click on this link and you can do a surname search for Nicholson-- http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ As you can see, it was widely scattered throughout Ireland and could be Irish, English, or Scottish. You could search for the children's baptisms on rootsireland.ie, though records from the 1840s are spotty. Hello! I am new to the list! Is anyone available to search the books for a birth record for me? I am looking for a particular birth in 1926 in Volume 443 and page 452 at Springfield, Massachusetts. I believe that these books are available at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. This particular person is still alive and well, and was adopted in our family. I am trying to help her find the record of her natural birth parents. The above birth record will be of her adoption I believe, but I am hoping it may lead to the original record of birth and possibly the names of her natural parents. So the person that may be helping to look up this record may have to be a super sleuth and try to figure out her original birth record from the one above. If anyone is up for the challenge and can help us, we would certainly appreciate it! My family member that I am helping is in her 80's and only recently did she find out she was adopted when she saw it on a 1930 census record. Her parents never told her, so her natural parents are a mystery. Thanks and have a great day! Sincerely, Sandy Lovell
Does anyone have access to a resource that could answer this question? I'm trying to find out if "Farrell Place" in South Boston was an actual street between F and Dorchester Streets or a "place" on First Street. The person I am researching lived at Farrell Place in the early 1860s but had an address on First Street at the same time. Below is a description I found of Farrell Place, but it doesn't tell me whether it was considered a street called Farrell Place or a place, perhaps on First Street itself: "Farrell Place: South Boston, from west First St., southwest, between F Street and Dorchester St; built over in 1897" ~ from *A Record of the Streets, Alleys, Places, etc., in the City of Boston*, (1910), 2nd edition, Street Laying-Out Department. Google Books (http://www.books.google.com : accessed 12 March 2014). Thank you for any help, Debbie from Oregon
