David Long, you gave Susanna Catharina a last name. Moyer. I never had her maiden name. Are we sure it was Moyer? I descend from Anna Maria Bost born abt 1746. She married Mark House. They both died in Iredell Co. NC. Mary Harkey Russell [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bird
Mary... No... I myself am not sure/positive her surname was Moyer. However, I have seen this on several "reports" and emails I have received. I have not seen any source of the information with these "reports" and/or emails. I would have obtained that information as well. Kent Pursur, in a previous message to this list, also gave the surname, for Susanna Catharina, as Moyer, daughter of Elias Myer and Anna Catharina --?--. Her parent's names are new info formation for me (though not proven). The late Jane Beck was very helpfull in getting me started. I was under the impression that the Bost genealogy was "rather well plowed ground" as she put it. Her research has been donated to the Heritage Room in Monroe, NC. I only echanged emails with her, before her untimely death. ALL I KNOW for CERTAIN is that my Henry Long md. Catherine Bost. She most certainly had a younger sister Caroline Bost who md. Paul Hagler, and they had a younger brother William "Billy" Bost who died (apparently) unmaried in 1891. William's Estate Records name many of his siblings, neices and nephews, including my 2nd great grandfather, Julius Long, along with his brother, William Long, and their "living" siblings. I have not yet proven much more than this and i'm relying on the previous research of others (at this time). Including article #305, by Sally Ranson (1998) in the "Heritage of Old Mecklenburg Co., NC 1763-2003", Old Mecklenburg Historical Society. Sally Ranson lists only 7 children for "Johannas Bast/Bost." died in 1777. They are Leonhardt, Maria Catharina, Johannas, Elias, Margaretha Barbara, Elizabeth and Johann Jacob. Some give his full name as Johännas Wilhelm Bäst (d. 1777-78) I have not seen a source for Johännas Bäst middle (or given) name of Wilhelm. Although I have not seen the baptismal records of his children in PA, it is my understanding that he is listed only as Johannas. It is also my understanding, that in his will of 1777-78, he is simply named John Bost. I find this very irregular! Because the germans did NOT go by their "Christian" name. Which in this case (Johännas Wilhelm), the "Christian" name is Johannas or John. The "Christian" name was "rarely" used outside of church activities/records. If Johannas' name was indeed Johannas Wilhelm, he "should" have gone by his "given" or middle name of William in court records (Will) to follow or conform to the traditional patterns. Do you have any information that might help straighten out this naming problem for me?? ----------- In revisiting my conversations with Jane Beck, I came across this message in which she suggested that there is not enough evidence to prove that Johann Wilhelm Bast was a son of Johännas Bäst. (From my [DWL] info, Wilhelm is the only Bost to settle in Lincoln/Catawba County). Concerning the monument at St. John's "David, monuments are not put up by the original family. Johannes Bost had no say in what went on that stone. Monuments are erected by descendants and/or interested parties, and the words on that stone reflect what they know -- and their knowledge is limited to what has been preserved by record and/or verbally passed down in the family. Above and beyond that, they use the same sources to research (hopefully) that you and I do. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't." "The reason there is no certainty that Wilhelm Basst was a son of Johannes Basst is that no record exists for it. While the Baptismal records of the oldest children of Johannes & wife Susannah exist in Pennsylvania Records up until the time of their move to North Carolina, William's name does not appear as a son of theirs. These birth records appear in the Williams Township Congregation Church Book. The first child recorded for Johannes & wife Susannah was "Leonhardt", born 2-11-1740. The Johannes Basst family was NOT the only Bost family in Pennsylvania... The approximate birth date agreed upon by means of existing records for Wilhelm Basst (William) is around 1738 at the latest. Now let's talk chronology: In 1732, when the ship Pink Plaisance arrived at Philadelphia, Johannes Basst was listed as a child. We do not know his exact age -- but we can conclude from the evidence about William that he was born no later than just 6 years after that arrival of Johannes, the child. This alone does not rule Johannes OUT as father -- But we can conclude that he was quite young to have been a father. The word "child" on a ship's list seems to have varying implications from list to list. There are those which include as "children" all those under 16 - We have no specifics on the age max of the children on that particular ship. If Johannes was as old as say, 15, then he would have been around 21 at the time of William's birth -- IF William was born as late as 1738. (And we don't know that he wasn't born sooner. If Johannes was as young as 8 or 9, however -- and we don't know that he wasn't, then we have a chronological improbability. (and you can un-fancy that to this -- We don't know that Johannes was old enough to have been the father of a child born 1738 or before.)"
