Author: sunshineglory Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bost/252.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: William Bost (1739-1822), the son of German-born Johannes Wilhelm Bast and his first wife, was one of the pre-Revolutionary pioneer settlers in Catawba County, North Carolina. The DAR Patriot Index lists William, along with four of his brothers, as serving in the Revolutionary War. According to Bost historian Mary Pegram West's Biographical Notes, in 1754, the Bost family moved to North Carolina and settled in a German community near St. John's Lutheran Church in Cabarrus County. According to an Anson County, NC Bond dated January 19, 1762, William married Catherine Goodhart. On August 22 of that same year, William was granted 565 acres of land on Clark's Creek in Lincoln (now Catawba) County. It was here that William and Catherine moved, built a house and barns, planted crops, and raised their family. In late 1822, William died and his will was probated in Lincoln County Court in January of 1823. Sources: (1} Mary Pegram West's Biographical Notes from The Johannes Bast Family. They marched to the Charleston, S. C. area and then to Purysburg on the Savannah River. Their forces moved up and down the river so as to prevent the British from crossing. They were near the forces of General John Ashe at the line of disaster at Brier Creed (March 3, 1779). He also stated that they were near the Continental Troops of General Benjamin Lincoln, but did not join them. He was shortly afterwards discharges, following expiration of his tour of duty (April 1779). "In 1780 he entered again as a volunteer horseman under Colonel Alexander Brevard. He marched through Mecklenburg Co. to the camps of General Nathaniel Greene. Their troops were joined by Col. William Washington, arriving from Virginia. He was discharged in December, 1780 after serving a tour of three months. His final tour of duty began in August, 1781 at which time he was drafted as a militiaman in Captain Davidson's Company of Mc Dowell's Regiment. Captain Davidson later resigned and was replaced by Captain William Tabor. He served on the Catawba Frontier, engaged in scouting duties against the Indians. His full name was Charles Franklin Bost. He was my step g grandfather. He was born in 1869 and died in 1951. I barely remember him as I was 4 yrs old at his death. He was married to Mattie Isom (b-1866, d-1934). They are buried in the Staples, Guadalupe Co, TX Cemetery as is Jonathon Harvey Bost's wife, Cynthia R Finger Bost. Cynthia was born 12 Jan, 1834 and died 18 May, 1904 according to her tombstone. A half sister to Charles Franklin Bost named Julia Michaels Drumm is also buried at the Staples Cemetery. Julia was a daughter of Cynthia Finger and Cynthia's first husband Ambrose Michaels. McDuffie Hunsucker (brother in law of Charles Franklin Bost) is also buried in Staples. I am unsure if Cora Bost Hunsucker is buried in Staples. Jonathon Harvey Bost is living with the Hunsucker family in Staples at the time of the 1900 census and living with son Charles Franklin Bost family in Staples in 1910. Staples is in Guadalupe Co. I recall my grandmother telling me that her grandfather (Jonathon Harvey Bost) was a Confederate Soldier and following the war a one armed carpenter. He lost his arm in battle.
