Hello again Kent, Yes, you and I know about German naming patterns, but others may not know. I don't think it matters how he signs his name in his will -- his name in other "official" documents was "Johann Wilhelm". To put him into one's database as "Johannes" is misleading, and could cause many to be confused. He should have had the "Calling Name" of Wilhelm (or William in America), but for some reason he chose "Johannes". I think we'll never know WHY he wanted to be known as "Johannes". BTW, I have a German ancestor who had no middle name. His name was Johannes in all official documents in Germany. When he arrived in America, he was entered, first, in official records as "Johannes", then, eventually, as "John". Wasn't any ambuguity there. (GRIN) Keep in touch, George W. It is unknown why he used the name "Johannes" in some official documents, since "Johannes" was ONLY used by Germans when they had no middle name. ????? His first wife was Mary KLEIN (CLINE). The second wife's name was Susannah Catharina/Katharina MOYER, although she evidently "went by" Catharina/Katharina/Catherine/Katherine. Seeing as how she was born in the early years of the 1700's in PA, from German immigrants, her actual name, as given by her parents, was probably Susanna Katharina, which would have been the German spelling. (Susanna was the German spelling, and Susannah was the English spelling.) I don't recall seeing any German given names for Catherine/Katherine beginning with a "C", it was always a "K", and Anglicized in America to a "C". Your "Elias" is actually "Johann Elias". Don't know if I've figured out our relationship before, but using my genealogy program (RootsMagic), I find that we are 6th Cousins, once removed. Regards, George W. He was Johann Wilhelm BAST, b. 26 Feb 1720, Keldung, Rhineland-Palatinate, GER; d.bef 13 Sep 1777 (his will was probated on that date). It is unknown WHY he signed his name "Johannes". The German custom was that if a "Johan/Johann/Johannes" didn't have a middle name, his first name was "Johannes"; if he DID have a middle name, his first name was Johann or Johan. This one DID have a middle name, "Wilhelm" (William). He married Mary KLEIN (AKA Mary CLINE) abt 1738 in PA. One child resulted from this marriage: Johann Wilhelm "William" BAST, Jr.. Mary died abt 1739 in PA. Johann Wilhelm then married Susannah Catharina MOYER in Bucks Co., PA (now Northampton Co., PA), abt 1739. >From this union, 11 children were born. I have done genealogy research on German families for decades and it always annoys me that other researchers ignore "first" names, and, often, use the Anglicized form of the "middle" name, rather than the actual name a person was given at birth, e.g., using "William" when the actual birth name was "Wilhelm", or using "John" when the actual birth name was Johannes or Johann. We may find Anglicized name variants in official records, but I've always been an advocate of using the actual "birth name", regardless of how the English scribes wrote it down. It just ensures accuracy and consistency. Just as an aside, in Germany the "first" name was NEVER used, unless the person had no middle name, which was very rare. The "first" name was the name of a religious figure, usually a Saint; the "middle" name was the name that a person was actually known as, i.e., his/her "Calling Name". Regards, George W. As I have cautioned on other Rootsweb/Ancestry Mailing Lists and Message Boards, if one is to do genealogy research, it is helpful (nay, required) for one to do a little research/study of history/geography. There are several places on the Internet where one may look at "County Formations" for various states. I have made web pages for several states that show when/how counties were formed. If you want more info, just email me at [email protected] Jesse's wife was Sarah Perlina "Sally" WILSON; b.abt 1815, NC. The two children I have for Jesse and Sally are Frances and Matthew Alcana. BTW, the 1880 Census Report only says the location was "District 43". It might be difficult to find out exactly what area that District encompassed. Regards, George W. I think William (Jr.) must have been born around 1738 and that Mary must have died shortly thereafter, because Johann (Sr.) remarried to Susannah Catharina MOYER about 1939. She is the mother of all the other 11 children of Johann (Sr.). When you say you descend from Elias, do you mean Johann Elias BAST, born 1747, from the 2nd wife; or John Elias BOST, born 1772, the son of Johann Wilhelm (William) BAST, Jr., from the 1st wife; or John Elias BOST'S son, Elias BOST, born about 1815? Hello Payne, No. I'm the Admin for about 3 dozen Mailing Lists and have seen any indication that there was any censoring going on. That is, beyond that which is understandable, e.g., posting commercial information, starting "flame wars", off-topic postings, etc., and that is only after the fact. Do you have any specific clues that this might be happening?
