PART 1 OF 3 ---------------------- Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, Some time ago I saw a post to the Bushong GenForum from Christina Bushong who stated that the biological father of Milton Bushong was a Sisk. After comparing the Bushong DNA with a descendant of Milton Bushong, we already know that the descendant's DNA does not match the DNA of the Bushongs nor does it match those of the Mitchells who now call themselves Bushongs.I contacted the Administrator of the Sisk DNA Project to see if I could send him DNA to compare but he has been totally uncooperative which is a real shame. If this does not interest you, you can just delete it. But this research is important to someone and I have seen very little on the Sisks. If there are mistakes, please let me know and I will correct them. I decided to do some research to see, among the Sisks, who could be a possible fit as a candidate. Although I don't know for sure, since there is no slam dunk proof as yet, after studying the various Sisk candidates, weighing all the evidence, I am leaning towards Morgan Sisk as the possible father since he is the only one of these men that was actually living in Logan County, Ohio where Milton Bushong was conceived and because of the Virginia connections. But without DNA comparison with the Sisk project, I cannot say for sure that Milton Bushong was even a Sisk by blood. We have two Sisks families in the early 1800s, one in Maryland and one in Virginia that came to Ohio between 1820 and 1830. The Maryland Sisks came from Dorchester County, Virginia and settled in Pickaway County, Ohio. The Virginia Sisks came from Madison County, Virginia and settled in Knox County, Ohio and then moved into Logan County. You would think that, of course, it has to be the Maryland Sisks as Pickaway is closer to Ross county. But remember at time of conception, Nancy Bushong was living in Logan County not Ross so both Pickaway and Knox county cannot be ruled out and those strong Virginia connections were there with Morgan Sisk being from the Virginia line. So such strong connection with the Maryland Sisks. ------------------------------ Back in August 2009 I posted about a newspaper article I had found: Marysville Tribune (Ohio) 28 May 1879 Page 4, Column 3 PROBATE NOTICE UNION COUNTY OHIO Milton Bushong, guardian of John O. Forrey. William O. Forrey and Martha J. Forrey" JOHN B. COATS Probate Judge May 7, 1879 At the time of posting this, I thought this Milton was the son of Jacob and Rebecca Bushong but in June 2012 changed my mind as new evidence came to light. This article referred to Milton Bushong son of Nancy Bushong. As I have said, the Virginia connections were strong and if you look back to where the Sisks came from, Madison County, VA you will see that Madison County. VA was formed from Culpeper County. VA where Bushong lived which takes us back to Rockingham/Shenandoah County. VA which takes us to Page County, VA where, low and behold, Sisks and Forrey families are found very early on and then traveled to Ohio. 1836 Deed - William Bushong and wife Catharine of Carroll County, OH to Thomas Morrison of KNOX County, Ohio. I have contacted Mark Bushong and we are working together to see it is plausible that Morgan Sisk is the father of Milton Bushong as he was leaning towards the Maryland Sisks. ------------------- MY SISK RESEARCH There are several candidates that I looked at as possible father of Milton Bushong born 1826. 1. John C. Sisk born 1792, Virginia and married Madison County, VA to Mary "Polly" Berry, died Perry County, Ohio 1. John Sisk, born circa 1794, Maryland, married, Pickaway County, OH to Verlinda Purdum, died 27 October 1865, Pickaway County, Ohio 3. David Sisk born 1800, Maryland married Pickaway County, OH to Lillie White Mills, died 2 March 1875 in Pickaway County, Ohio 4. Elizabeth Sisk, born circa 1791, Maryland - either a widow or spinster, died 9 April 1883 in Pickaway County, Ohio 5. *Nancy Six (Sisk?) intended to marry George Hewitt 21 February 1825 in Athens County, Ohio. Marriage not returned. *Since mother's maiden name was Sisk, this could not be mother of Milton Bushong since we are working with hypothetical fraternal DNA. I researched each one of these candidates and slowly eliminated them based on various reasons, some explained here. I don't intend to put all that extensive research on this List, since this post is already too long and broken down into 3 parts. 1. John C. Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with her husband at time of Milton's birth.{Definite brother of Morgan} - Living in Washington County, Ohio with Moore and Cline neighbors. 2. John Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with husband at time of Milton's birth. 3. David Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with husband at time of Milton's birth. 4. Elizabeth Sisk - If she was a widow then she could be a candidate but why give the child away when she had solid family support. 5. *Nancy Six (Sisk?) - This is weird because an intended marriage with George Hewitt was not returned and she is not in the 1850 census with a husband George Hewitt. However there is a Nancy Hewitt living with an Aaron Hewitt in the 1850 census in Athens County but she was born in Pennsylvania. Could not be mother of Milton since the DNA would match a Hewitt not a Sisk. ------------------------------------ So where does that leave us with this research? MORGAN SISK ------------------------------------- I came to candidate #6, which to me is the most likely father of Milton Bushong for many reasons. Wandering Sisk, unattached with wife dead and with relatives nearby in Logan County at the time of Milton's conception, plus Morgan in later life moves to Logan County after Milton Bsuhong becomes an adult. To be nearer to his natural biological son? #6 - MORGAN SISK Born: Circa 1793, Virginia Died: Between 1870 and 1880, Logan County, Ohio Buried: Unknown Cemetery, Ohio Married: Bond posted 11 January 1815, Madison County, Virginia to Frances "Fanny" Berry ------------------------------------ MADISON COUNTY VIRGINIA BONDS Layton Sisk to Rhody Jenkins - 28 March 1800 {Twice widowed Rhoda found living in 1850 with brother-in-law Morgan Sisk} John C. Sisk to Polly Berry - 9 December 1813 Morgan Sisk to Fannie Berry - 11 January 1815 -------------------------------------------- Morgan Sisk married Frances "Fanny" Berry, the sister of Mary "Polly" Berry who married John C. Sisk. Morgan Sisk and John C. Sisk were brothers. John C. Sisk's marriage bond post 9 December 1813, Madison County, Virginia to marry to Mary "Polly" Berry. Morgan Sisk was born in circa 1793-4 in Virginia and is the same age as Nancy McCleary Bushong who was born 29 November 1793 in Virginia. Morgan Sisk married Frances "Fanny" Berry with the Bond posted the 11th January 1815 in Madison County, Virginia and are found in the 1820 census living in Madison County, Virginia. Between 1830 and 1840 Morgan had permanently moved to Ohio but might have traveled back and forth between Virginia and Ohio in the time frame of 1820 to 1830, the same time that Milton was born to visit relatives already moved to Ohio. By 1840 Morgan Sisk has permanently moved to Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio. He is found in the 1850 census as a widower living with *Rhoda Bailey. By 1860 Morgan had moved to Logan County, Ohio not only his relatives, but where Nancy Bushong and her son Milton lived and by 1870 Morgan Sisk is living with his widowed daughter Lavina Startzman. He died in Logan County after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census. It would be worth your while to find an obit on him and on Lavina and all the other children of Morgan Sisk. Lavina Sisk Startzman was born in Madison County, Virginia in 1826 {Date year calculated from her death certificate}. This does not rule Morgan out as being the father of Milton if he traveled back and forth between Virginia and Ohio which I suspect he did and was visiting in Logan County, Ohio circa 1826. -------------------- MADISON COUNTY VIRGINIA MARRIAGES Morgan Sisk and Fannie Berry 11 January 1815 -------------------- 1820 Federal Census: Virginia Madison County MORGAN SISK spelled Sick -------------------- 1830 Federal Census: Virginia Madison County MORGAN SISK --------------------- At this point you might say, well this proves she is wrong. He was still in Virginia when Milton Bushong was conceived in 1826. Oh? He could have traveled to Ohio to visit Virginia relatives and to scout out where he wanted to live, before moving his wife and family of girls to Ohio permanently. It only takes a moment to conceive a child. ---------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Pleasant Township, Knox County MORGAN SISK 1 male 40 and under 50 years of age {Head of Household Morgan Sisk} 1 female 5 and under 10 years of age 2 females 10 and under 15 years of age 2 females 15 and under 20 years of age {Mary Catharine and Levina} 1 female 20 and under 30 years of age 1 female 40 and under 50 years of age {Wife of Head of Household Frances "Fanny" Berry} ----------------------- TO BE CONTINUED: Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong
I know for a fact that there is a 12 loci match to Sisk. At first they seemed interested, then went quiet. -----Original Message----- From: boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Russell Bushong Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2013 7:24 PM To: boschong@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOSCHONG] Part 1 - Tracking down the biological father of Milton Bushong, born 1826, Logan County, Ohio PART 1 OF 3 ---------------------- Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, Some time ago I saw a post to the Bushong GenForum from Christina Bushong who stated that the biological father of Milton Bushong was a Sisk.
