Boschong Subscribers, This posts is about Delilah Bushong and a few of my thoughts on why a lot more research has to be done with these particular Ohio Bushongs. Are there obits on any of these people that can be shared on this List? The reason I ask is because I am looking at an old family tree that was given to me back in 2000 at the first Bushong reunion and in this report it names Angeline, Robert, Thomas and James M. as children of Delilah. So far I have not found evidence to substantiate that but I'll keep looking. As far as I can tell the three children in the 1850 census are her Bushong children and then she had no children with Henry Derflinger since she was 46 years old when she married him. These two James are not the same person as one is a Bushong & one is a Derflinger. James Bushong was born 1841 James M. Derflinger was born 1852 ------------ James Bushong married Lucinda Hatcher. They named one of their sons Edward John Bushong and I believe that this naming was because of Lt. Edward W. or V. Bushong. Only more research and time will tell whether this is correct. Edward John Bushong married Turia laura Clapsaddle and theirs was an interesting marriage which I won't go into right now. Some day down the road. -------------- FIRST CLUE: The 1840 census was my first clue when I found 3 separate Bushong households in Logan County. There is a John Bushong living in Bokes Creek Township and that has to be the one married to Mary, then there is the widow of James, Nancy Bushong and her children and then there is another Bushong household with the first name so illegible you can't read it as shown below. --------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Perry Township, Logan County NANCY BUSHONG 1 male 10 and under 15 years of age {Son of Nancy - Milton Bushong} 1 male 15 and under 20 years of age {Son of Nancy and James - Jacob Bushong} 1 female 20 and under 30 years of age {Daughter of Nancy and James - Delilah Bushong} 1 female 40 and under 50 years of age {Head of Household widow Nancy McCrary Bushong} Daughter Jemina Bushong married in 1837 to David Endsley so she is not shown in the 1840 Bushong household. --------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Bokes Creek Township, Logan County JOHN BUSHONG 1 male under 5 yrs of age {Unknown} 1 male 20 and under 30 years of age {Head of Household John Bushong} 1 female 15 and under 20 years of age {Wife Mary Bushong} Note: Did this couple have a daughter named Nancy Margaret Bushong born circa 1844 who married Michael O' Brien? Possibly. ----------------------- ILLEGIBLE BUSHONG Bokes Creek Township, Logan County 1 male under 5 years of age 1 male 30 and under 40 years of age 1 female under 5 years of age 2 females 10 and under 15 years of age 1 female 30 and under 40 years of age ------------------------------ SECOND CLUE: Then checking the cemetery record for North Greenfield Cemetery where a lot of the family was buried was the second clue and one that was missed by other researchers. I found James Bushong died 15 August 184--- son of John and Mary Bushong. So who is this John and Mary? There are a lot of broken and illegible tombstones in this cemetery so there are probably more Bushong buried here then are presently recorded. --------------------------- THIRD CLUE: The sloppy work done by the Clerk of the Court of Logan County for marriage licenses and returns with I am sure are missing marriages. I found the marriage application for Nathaniel Moore and Nancy Jane Bushong. They applied for the license 2 December 1856. It looks like who ever married them, did not return the marriage or it was never recorded by the Clerk but I am pretty sure they did get married since they are living together and have children together. It is possible that the Probate Judge married them the same day that he issued the license, thus no marriage return. I believe that Nancy Jane Bushong Moore died shortly after the birth of the last child Nathaniel Moore Jr. The reason I say that is because that son is living with a Peterson family in the 1880 census as a 10 year old. Sometime when a wife died shortly after giving birth, the husband couldn't stand to have the baby around since it was a reminder of his loss of his wife and sometimes he blamed the baby for the loss of his wife. Silly but that's the way some thought back then. They usually looked around for another family with a nursing mother to take the baby in and raised it. Possibly that is the case here. However there was an outbreak of small pox in the early 1870s in that area so it is also possible that she died from that disease. Nathaniel Moore and Nancy Jane Bushong had 3 children: Kendall, Samuel and Nathaniel Moore Jr.. From what I can see, after the death of the mother Nancy Jane Bushong, the children were pretty much on their own as soon as they were old enough to fiend for themselves as shown in the census records. She is probably buried in the North Greenfield Cemetery with the rest of the Bushongs. ---------------------- DELILAH BUSHONG Born: Circa 1814, Logan County, Ohio. d/o James Bushong and Nancy McCrary Died: January 1879, Logan County, Ohio Married Twice: M/1: Circa 1840 - 1841 to Unknown Bushong, could be a James or John 3 children from this marriage: James, Nancy Jane and Thomas M. Good work Gloria. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. There is an old now defunct cemetery just south of the "new" North Greenfield cemetery, called Akey. Several of the McCrary family are buried there and possibly James Bushong, husband of Nancy McCrary Bushong. The cemetery is now a part of a cow pasture after the farmer who bought it tore out the fence . Another thing to consider is the fact that the present North Greenfield cemetery is not in North Greenfield at all but rather down the road a piece. A good majority of the graves and stones in the older section of the cemetery were MOVED from the ORIGINAL North Greenfield cemetery that was across from the Methodist church that is ACTUALLY located in North Greenfield. I have never gotten a positive answer as to why it was moved, though it could be the fact that the tract of land floods from time to time. So with that in mind, how many graves and stones were either not moved or were overlooked. Cemetery relocation has never been an exact science. James Bushong could possibly be located there also. -----Original Message----- From: boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Russell Bushong Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2013 5:08 PM To: boschong@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOSCHONG] Delilah Bushong, d/o James Bushong & Nancy McCrary - And other ramblings Boschong Subscribers, This posts is about Delilah Bushong and a few of my thoughts on why a lot more research has to be done with these particular Ohio Bushongs.
