Becky, There are two types of DNA testing that females can do, mitochondrial DNA ( mtDNA) and autosomal DNA (which familytreedna site calls the Family Finder DNA test). The third type of test (restricted to males) that familytreednadoes is the Y-chromosome, this is the test that some of the males with the Bushong last name have taken part in. If you are interested in taking a DNA test, I would suggest that you read up on what each might give you in results, they may or may not answer the questions that you have. See the following Q&A from familytreedna http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers.aspx?id=8#519 Beware that the results of the different types of tests can not be compared with each other, but only compared with results of folks taking the same type of test. The MtDNA test DNA that is passed from mother to child, so it can be used to determine whether someone might be related on the all female ancestral line. If you have close matches with this test, the person matching will more than likely have a different last name than you and you'll have to use genealogical research to determine how you are related. The Y-chromosome DNA testing, test markers on the Y-chromosome that is passed from father to son. So this test can be used to see if you are related to someone else on the all male ancestral line. If you have a close match with someone else taking this test, more than likely you'll share the same last name. If you don't share the same last name it could be because a son was adopted, a mother had an affair, the family changed last names for some reason, etc. I believe the Autosomal DNA testing is relatively newer, it samples markers from the other 22 chromosome pairs which can come from either parents. This being newer I'm not sure how many people of have taken this test yet. This test might help locate relatives from anywhere in your familytree, though you and the other person will have to figure out how you are related through traditional genealogical research. I believe this is the same type of test that ancestryDNA is now pushing for $99 a test. I don't know how the autosomal DNA test from AncestryDNA compares with familytreeDNA'ssame test. http://dna.ancestry.com/ None of these test will tell you exactly how you are related to someone, but only the probability that you are related within so many generations or not related at all. Actually I think they do a better job at the later. John
Thanks John. That was a very good summary.
