    1. [BOSCHONG] Jesse Bushong - 1870 Deposition - Chancery - Sarah V. Bowman VS Bowman Administrator
    2. Russell Bushong
    3. Good Afternoon Boschong Subscribers, I found this Chancery Suit in Rockingham County. Although it is not for a Bushong, several Bushong's names are mentioned. It is always good to read these suits since it places a person in a particular place at a particular time. George M. Bowman died 22 April 1861 and David Bowman was appointed Administrator of his Estate which was large for that time frame, an estate valued at approximately $14,000. I believe David Bowman was probably a brother or uncle of George M. Bowman. This suit went on for some years and was finally settled in 1880. As far as I can interpret, the widow Sarah V. Bowman sued David Bowman, her husband's administrator, over the handling of the money invested in Confederate bonds, but there was probably more to it then just that. --------------------- On 8th October 1861, the personal estate of George M. Bowman, deceased, was held in Rockingham County. Because of those present, I'm pretty sure that this homestead was in the Plains area between Timberville and New Market. Jesse Bushong bought 1 red cow for #15.00 1/2 Peter Bushong bought 13 1/2 pounds of Tallow at 10 1/2 cents a pound for a total of $1.41 1/2. Note: Tallow was used for several purposes. To make candles, for medicinal purposes and to lubricate equipment. ----------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Virginia District No. 1, PO Harrisonburg, Rockingham County Enumerated 7 September 1860 Page 712 Line 12-14, HH 2706/2651 Jesse Bushong 35/Male/Farmer/ValueRE$3120/ValuePE$573/VA Elizabeth Bushong 26/Female/CannotReadOrWrite/VA John Good 14/Male/AttendedSchool/VA AND 1860 Federal Census: Virginia New Market Townhip, Shenandoah County Enumerated 9 August 1860 Page 720 Lines 5-11, HH 875/875 Peter Bushong 37/Male/Farmer/$1098-$690/VA Susan Bushong 25/Female/VA Perry Bushong 4/Male/VA Emily Bushong 1/Female/VA Mary Bushong 67/Female/CannotReadOrWrite/VA {Mother of Peter and Jesse} Jesse Bushong 34/Male/Farmer/MarriedWithinTheYear/VA {brother of Peter} Elizabeth Bushong 25/Female/VA {Wife of Jesse} ---------------------- This is disappointing because usually when one was deposed back in this area they asked the age of the person. However this Counsellor did not. If he had, it would have cleared up all those questions from back in the BOSCHONG Archives for December 2007 post with the Peter Bushong deposition of 1848 with mention of son who we still have not been able to identify.
