CORRECTION TO A POST OF OCTOBER 2009 ----------------------- Good Beautiful Evening Boschong Subscribers, Back in October 2009 I posted about a William D. Bushong and I identified him as the son of Frederick M. Bushong and Alice E. Stowe. This morning I called the Coles County Illinois Courthouse and spoke with a Clerk and asked about the marriage application. The clerk checked for me and told me that the application stated that W. D. Bushong's parents were Perry Bushong and Etta Hayes. So I was wrong about his parents and am correcting that now. This particular William D. Bushong's parents are not Frederick M. Bushong and Alice E. Stowe. His parents are Perry Jefferson Bushong and Mary Etta Hayes proven by his marriage application in the courthouse in Coles County, Illinois. Two different William D. Bushongs close in age. Wow. And one not found in the 1900 census and the other not found in the 1910 census. There is a lesson to be learned here. I did the unthinkable and assumed. I broke my own rule as you cannot do genealogy based on census records and what you find on the Internet. You must get into the court records. I went against everything I believe as a genealogist and I have learned a very valuable lesson. I am not mad at anyone except myself. This is a mistake that could have been made by anyone since there were two men exactly the same names and their ages were only two years off and both with Kentucky origins. At the time I posted, I based my assumption on the only 1900 census found with a William D. Bushong and it clearly stated that William and Charles Bushong were brothers, both brakeman for the railroad. But I did wonder why in 1910, William had changed jobs, but explained it away to myself as the brakeman job being extremely dangerous and possibly his wife Nellie talked him into changing professions. He wouldn't be the first man that changed jobs mid-stream. It is a weird coincidence that William D. Bushong, as a salesman, married a girl whose father worked for the railroad as a conductor. Thanks to Herb who was the ONLY one who nicely pointed out the 2 year age difference for William in the census records from the 1900 to the later census records where William was married. But since accuracy to age in census is not always a criteria, I decided that until I found more evidence one way or the other, I would just stick with what I had posted and correct it later if need be. It did nag on me. I knew that there must be other proof one way or the other, out there which I have now found and Herb was correct, there are two different William D. Bushongs, so THANK YOU Herb for nicely pointing out a questionable post. :) ----------------------- I have not found the William D. Bushong, s/o of Perry and Etta Bushong, in the 1900 census before he married Nellie Partlowe as yet. Has anyone? ---------------------------- And what happened to William D. Bushong in the 1900 census, but I did find the following William but am not sure it is him since the birth month and year are off and named spelled incorrectly. He is living in the household of a German couple. It is a possibility but not written in stone. Could this be him? No proof one way or the other. Since this is a German household, whoever gave the information might not have known how to spell William's last name. The age is correct, the place of birth is correct and the location for him to meet Nellie is correct. His birth month is wrong and the year is one year off. But that might have been the Enumerator calculating from the information given.
