NOTE: This is not Edwin Bushong who I just previously posted about. At this point, I am not entirely sure who this young man could be unless this is the fellow below in the 1900 census as this Edward Bushong was born in New York and might have been back there visiting his family. -------------- 1900 Federal Census: Missouri Independent City of St. Louis, ED 270, Ward 18 Enumerated 4 June 1900 Page 129B, Sheet 4 Lines 55-57, HH 83 Clinton Street Edward Bushong Head/W/M/april1874/26/Md7yrs/SalesmanFishStand/RentsHome/NY/France/France Minnie Bushong Wife/W/F/May1878/22/1child1living/MO/Germany/Louisiana Frank J. NIAGARA FALLS, NY, 17 August -- Edward Bushong had a starling experience yesterday at the falls. He was riding a bicycle across the reservation, headed for the bridge to Bath Island. There is quite a grade leading to the falls end of the bridge, and Bushong rushed down it at high speed. About 150 feet from the bridge he took his fee off the pedals and coasted. The wheel rushed onto the bridge and struck the railing, and both man and wheel went over into the rapids. At this point the waters rush to the falls with terrific speed, and the spectators expected to see the young man swept over the cataract, but fortunately, he scrambled to the bank, where he fell in a heap. He received a gash on the head from contact with a rock when he went into the rapids. He was dazed by his adventure and had to be taken home in a carriage. The bicycle struck about ten feet from the place where Bushong did and was recovered. One of the wheels was knocked to pieces, and the iron of the bridge that was struck by the wheel was broken. ---------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong
