Boschong Subscribers, Yesterday one of our subscribers, Mareetta, sent us this really neat old newspaper article about Private Mark D. Kentfield who served honorably in World War II. The clipped article was found in an old family Bible and the name of the newspaper and date published was not included in the clipping. It could have come from The Carey Progessor, The Findlay Courier, or The Wyandot Daily Chief. --------------------- GETS MEDAL FOR BRAVERY IN ACTION Former Carey young man Honored for Valiant Service on Guadalcanal. Private Mark D. Kentfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kentfield, both deceased, former Wyandot county residents, recently received the Silver Star for bravery during action with the Marines at Guadalcanal. The citation given him and signed by Vice Admiral W. F. Halsey was as follows: "In the name of the President of the United States, the Commander of the South Pacific area and South Pacific force takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star medal to Private Mark D. Kentfield, United States Marine Corp for service set forth in the following citation: "For distinguished service in action on 18 August and 20 August 1942 at Guadalcanal. When fires were started in the regimental munitions dump by enemy small arms fire and bombers, Kentfield, without instructions, on his own initiative, unhesitatingly and with disregard for his personal safety, advanced into the midst of exploding ammunition and with great courage and intrepidity fought the fire, preventing its spread and was thus instrumental in saving lives and much invaluable material." During his early life, Private Kentfield lived at Crawford southeast of Carey. After the death of his parents, he became the ward of County Superintendent and Mrs. Ralph Hathaway of Wooster. He enlisted in service after the Jap attack on Pearl Harbor. He is twenty years old. While in action on Guadalcanal, the received several leg wounds and an abdominal wound and was confined to the hospital with malaria. He had another narrow escape at which time his marine corps knife saved his life. A Japanese soldier was about to jump him from behind and one of his buddies warned him with a yell which gave him time to draw his knife and get the Jap. He is now located in San Diego, California. He recently spent a furlough with Ohio relatives. He is a nephew of Mrs. F. R. Deerwester of Shawtown. ---------------- NOTE: Mark D. Kentfield was the son of Alfred and Edna Bushong Kentfield. Edna was the sister of Claudius Bushong and the daughter of William Alexander Bushong.
