    1. [BOSCHONG] "Doc" Bushong and the baseball catcher's mitt - Inventor? No way.
    2. Rick made the following statement: "You know, we're talking about Andrew and William, older brothers of the famous Albert "Doc" Bushong. The Dentist/Major League Base Ball Catcher - inventor of the catcher's mitt and namesake of Bushong Kansas...." -------------------- My comments: The Bushongs surely do like to embellish on family stories, particularly this family, and it is one of those stories that has no truth in it unless "Doc" was a child genius at age 4 years. The first glove was invented in 1860 and used in public in 1870 by Cincinnati Red Stockings catcher Doug Allison who wore a buckskin mitten when he had been suffered a hand injury. By 1875 it was used by a lot of catchers and by 1890 by all. "Doc" might have improved in some way on a glove that was already in existence, but in no way was he the inventor. 1860 Federal Census: Pennsylvania Reading City, Northwest District, Berks County Enumerated 20 July 1860 Page 1070 and 1071 Lines 39-40 and 1-5, HH 2427/2553 Charles Bushong 33/Male/Clerk/-------$200/PA Margaretta Bushong 30/Female/PA Andrew Bushong 10/Male/AttendedSchool/PA William Bushong 9/Male/AttendedSchool/PA Franklin Bushong 7/Male/AttendedSchool/PA ALBERT BUSHONG 4/Male/PA {Albert "Doc" Bushong} Sarah Bushong 2/Female/PA --------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
