Boschong Subscribers, I have already done a bit of posting on Sarah "Sadie" Bushong, d/o Jacob Bushong and Hannah Keller so check back in the BOSCHONG Archives July 2006, October 2006 and September 2008. I tried to find more information on Sarah's children. This family was extremely effected by the death of William Maxwell and son Emmet and it is certainly reflected in many ways. Sarah "Sadie" (Bushong) Maxwell was appointed by the Governor of Iowa to serve as State Librarian of Iowa. Any additional information on Sarah "Sadie" Bushong Maxwell and her descendants would be greatly appreciated. ------------------------------ SARAH "SADIE" BUSHONG Born: 12 February 1837, Columbiana County, Ohio, d/o Jacob Bushong & Hannah Keller Died: 12 October 1904, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the home of her daughter Married: 23 December 1858, Williams County, Ohio to William Maxwell. M. Boothman received a dispatch Tuesday morning announcing that WILLIAM MAXWELL and his son EMMETT, aged 17, were murdered in New Mexico on Friday last. The message was silent as to particulars, but an associated press dispatch conveys the information that the murderous deed was committed by a negro, for money. The bodies were not found till Sunday, and each of the victims were shot through the head. The murderer was arrested. Mr. Maxwell was a merchant at West Unity for several years, in company with E. S. Davies. He entered the army from that place, as Captain of Company C 3d Ohio Cavalry, serving two years when he resigned, returned home and renewed his former business association. In 1864 he removed to Panora, Guthrie county, Iowa. He was elected Clerk of the Court the same year, and was reelected in 1866. Was elected to represent the county in the Legislature in 1871, but resigned before his time was out to engage in railroad building. In 1875 he was appointed to complete a survey of certain reservations in Nebraska, after the satisfactory completion of which he, with his son Emmett, went to Colfax County, New Mexico to engage in stock raising. Mr. Maxwell was born in Lenawee County, Michigan, in 1835 and was married to Sadie Bushong (sister of Mrs. Boothman) in 1858. He was a man of positive ideas and convictions and was honored and respected by all with whom he came in contact. The son was but a small lad when the family left here, but is spoken of as a young man of fine promise. A bereaved wife and daughter are left alone of the family to mourn the terrible and cruel calamity." ----------------- OAK GROVE CEMETERY Stuart, Guthrie County, Iowa Double Stone HUSBAND William Maxwell 13 October 1836 24 March 1877 SON Emmet C.
