Boschong Subscribers, I continue to work on Peter Swartz to find proof that he is the grandfather of Elizabeth Swartz married to Anderson Bushong of the New Market Battlefield family. I have ordered from LDS the Will Book for the time frame that Peter Swartz died as it has his Estate settlement and may help some, I hope. We still do not know the man who participated in the Duel with Peter Swartz although we still suspect it was Henry Pence, basing that on Chancery Suit of 1797 but we know now who the two seconds were: Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary. Don't know which stood with Peter Swartz but suspect possibly Adam Heiskell. George Black was George Swartz, either a brother or son to Peter Swartz. --------------------- >From Page xii of the book "Shenandoah County and its Court House " by Fred Painter. Copyright 1979 County of Shenandoah, VA.. The following is an account from the early county records of a duel fought in Shenandoah County. "A court was called and held for the examination of Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary charged with being present, aiding and abetting in the murder of Peter Swartz at the courthouse of Shenandoah County, on the 10th of February, 1800, and of the American Independence of the 24th. Who appearing in discharge of their recognizance. It was demanded of them whether they were guilty of the matter thereof they stood charged. Say they were in no wise thereof guilty. Whereupon sundry witnesses were sworn and examined as well on behalf of the Commonwealth as the said Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary and being fully heard. It is considered by the court that they were not guilty of the aforesaid and are ordered to be henceforth discharged.The Grant Jury by the information of George Black do present Adam Heiskell for keeping a disorderly house in acting as a Second in duelling in the death of Peter Black within one month last past.
