L. McKinley, teacher of Ottawa, was born in Licking County, Ohio, 31 March 1845, a son of Amos and Margaret A. (Atherton) McKinley. His father was born in 1801 near Shenandoah Valley and was of Scotch descent. In 1811 he went to Licking County, Ohio, where he served an apprenticeship at the blacksmith and carriage-maker's trade after which he commenced business for himself which he followed till 1855. He then moved to La Salle County, Illinois, locating in Rutland Township. Having land in Iowa he went there but soon returned to this county, where he remained till his death in 1858. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and in politics he was first a Free-Soiler and afterward a Republican.
